Hi, I just wanted to introducte myself. I'm currently training for Ironman Arizona in November and have just started the gluten free diet in the case that I might be celiac. My doctor is running other tests before scope but I'm starting the diet now. I would appreciate any advice as far as long rides/runs. I've read through the other posts which have helped - I also used to do Clif bars. Is it true that Gatorade is gluten-free? And are all gels? Thanks!

Starting the diet before the tests will likely mess up your test results (i know--- I did the same thing) I did a 1/2 ironman in June and used all Hammer products. They didn't taste good, but did their job. I buy gluten free crackers or tortillas and peanut butter for 20+ runs, I think Lara bars are gluten free.

I agree - don't cut out the gluten pre-testing. I started going gluten-free and had a negative blood test and had to wait over three months for the scope. It was also negative but I am a living breathing gluten detector ! All I have to do is eat something, wait about 15 minutes and I can tell you it contains gluten...then leave me alone for a few hours because I'll be grumpy and ill, thank you very much.
Seriously though, ditching the gluten can mix up the testing. If gluten is the issue, continuing to eat it will mess up your training (possibly). On the bright side, if gluten is the issue and you go gluten-free you'll feel so much better and stronger.

There's a great line of gluten/dairy free granola/snack type material available from Whole Foods. One is produced specifically in Arizona called Laughing Giraffe and when I went camping for a week I ate a few bags of the coconut one. I don't think they sell it anywhere else..
There's three whole foods out here in AZ.. you can basically count on finding a lot of gluten free food there. Their prepared food section also tends to list the ingredients so you can have lunch or whatever and not worry about it.

Depending on where you are in AZ if you have a Picazzo's Pizza the gluten-free pizza crusts are fantastic.

Lara bars are good. The Whole Foods I went to had some of them marked gluten-free, but others were not. So I guess it pays to check each flavor before hand. They have a lot of flavors!

Thyroid cyst and nodules, Lactose / casein intolerant. Diet positive, gene test pos, symptoms confirmed by Dr-head. My current bad list is: gluten, dairy, sulfites, coffee (the devil's brew), tea, Bug's Bunnies carrots, garbanzo beans of pain, soy- no joy, terrible turnips, tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, and hard work. have a good day! :-) Paul
