Ground Floor Cafe on Riccarton Road did a great job for me. I used to eat there in my gluten-eating days, it was always a favourite. But then I saw them listed on gluten free and thought I would give them a try again. They have appeared on the list of the ten best cafes in New Zealand.
Anything on the menu can be ordered gluten free and they do seem to "get" it. They order their bread from Marx Bakery in Auckland, and really, you could not tell it had been frozen. I had an open faced sandwich with bacon, tomato and guacamole on a seeded panini which was so soft yet full-bodied and luscious, with a real crust (but not crusty), and everything was just as it should be. My gluten-eating friend said her "Mexican Pie" was delicious too.
They have both cabinet food and order from the menu. You can also purchase Marx Bakery bread there. I will have to put in an order because the bread was so good.
