How Do You React To Stevia

Because of the horrible reaction people are getting to Splenda and because I want to stay away from the other artificial sweetners, I got some stevia from Walmart, Truvia............it gave me the worst diarrhea. I know it must be that as I didn't change my eating habits at all other than that. I think Splenda gave me the metalliac taste in the mouth that is talked about in the wonderful article that was suggested on this board. If you have not read it, you should. You would never eat it again. I also have been having bad "nerve" headaches, not migraines and feel it could have contributed to those. I wouldn't touch the stuff now. I am using real sugar in controlled amounts and counting it on the Weight Watcher program that I am on. I think the less chemicals you put in your body the better off you are. I was taking lots of supplements too and have backed way off on them.

Well, there is a notable difference between Stevia and Truvia. They are not the same, and a reaction to Truvia would in no way mean that Stevia itself was the culprit.

The main ingredient in Truvia is Open Original Shared Link, a sugar alcohol, and these are known to cause D in some people. There is also the concern of how the erythritol is produced. I think I recall reading that corn is commonly used.

I only use Pure Stevia powder, and it has no other ingredients whatsoever. If a person has a reaction to such a pure product, then that would be a different matter.

That is very interesting. Sugar alcohols give me D within the hour. Goes right through me <_<

I can't tolerate any artificial sugar substitutes, but have never tried Stevia. As I understand it, it's an herb that tastes very sweet. If that's the case, it wouldn't be digested the same as the sugar alcohols (or not digested, as the case may be).

I agree that if you still want to, try a little pure stevia and see if that works for you.

Why the heck did they feel they needed to add sugar alcohols to it? :huh: Jeesh.

This part of the sentence sounds like it was generated by translation software.

      My daughter has celiac disease and has had for a long time. She fell loses strictly gluten-free diet and recently got rid of all cutting boards in any gluten in her house at all. She just had a stool test and it came back showing of gigantic response to gluten in her diet. What could be going on since she doesn't eat any gluten and is very careful about any kind of hidden glue? Help!

      I think sometimes the pain described here can be a result of a sort of 'perfect storm' of contributing factors.  Recently I had an appalling bout of lower back pain, lower burning gut pain and what felt like cramps.  I then started to think about what could have caused it and I realised it was several things that had set it off: I'd been carrying heavy luggage (back strain); I had been sitting down in a car for too long and wearing a tight belt (I have pudendal nerve issues and sacroiliac issues and this exacerbates the pain), and I had bloating and burning pain in my colon caused by eating too much soy, latte and caffeine, I guess putting further pressure in the lower abdomen.  I had this same pain prior to my diagnosis and a couple of years post-diagnosis, I'd quite forgotten how unpleasant it was.
