Hi, My 3 year old daughter has been diagnosed as Celiac for 6 months now. She has accidently had gluten 2 times (that i know of) and she has the worst behaviour for 7-10 days. Crying, extremely frustrated, kicking, biting, screaming etc. I wondered if anyone else has experienced this with their children and how long their reaction lasted for?? what other reactions did they have?? Its really stressing me out, not knowing if it was the gluten she had or other problems. I'd appreaciate hearing other parents experiences.

Not sure if I can help you but my almost 3 yr old has been gluten free for 1 year now and she is still fuzzy, whiny, cries a lot, does not sleep well, and to top it off she is tube fed because she stopped eating and drinking..... I asked the dr about removing and going totally gluten free in my household and he told me there was no need that she is not that bad but then why is she like this and she is also sick all the time (cold for the last 4 months, vomiting off and on)..... I am going to try to go completely gluten free and see if things change for us.... Good luck

Thanks for your reply Bonnie. It sounds like you have your hands full! It makes you sick in the stomach doesn't it, not knowing what the best thing is for these kids?? I guess it will be a bit trial and error. All the best with you guys all going gluten free.

Our 5 1/2 year old son (gluten free for 3 1/2 years) has behavioral issues that start within 2-3 hours after exposure and last for about 5-6 days. Then it takes a week to re-train him that he now is actually able to control his impulses, shouldn't haul off and hit someone the moment he is unhappy, and to not run and kiss every person he likes about 100 times a day. He gets very bipolar in his behavior. He also sticks his fingers and other things in his mouth more after he's been exposed, too, so sometimes one episode can lead to several and the behavioral problems can really last a long time.

      You have three celiac disease specific antibody tests that are positive: Endomysial  Antibody IGA (aka, EMA), tTG-IGA, and tTG_IGG. Furthermore, your Immunoglobulin A at 55 is low, meaning you are IGA deficient. This one is not an antibody test for celaic disease per se but a measure of "total IGA" levels and if low (yours is low) it can suppress the individual antibody scores and even cause false negatives. So, yes, it definitely looks like you have celiac disease.   Do not yet begin a gluten free diet as your physician may refer you to a GI doc for an endoscopy/biopsy of the small bowel lining for confirmation of the antibody testing.       Mine is definitely triggered by inflammation and stress! I do also have arthritis in my spine, but the pain is more in my pelvic area. Im sure i have other food intolerances or other autoimmune isues but the more I focus on it and see doctor after doctor, it just gets worse.  Best thing is get of Gluten! (I also avoid lactose). Try to limit stress and anything that causes inflammation in your body.

      Good morning,   I got an email about replies to this post. Some of my doctors had blamed a slipped disc for the pain I had and that contributes, but after meeting with a gastroenterologist AGAIN and trying some lifestyle modifications, I found out I have IBS and can't tolerate corn or excessive fructose to any degree. Cutting out corn AFTER having cut out all gluten containing products was a real pain but I feel much better now!

      So, I contacted Scott Adams, the author of that article and also the creator/admin of this website, and pointed out to him the need to clarify the information in the paragraph in question. He has now updated the paragraph and it is clear that the DGP-IGA does serve the purpose of circumventing the false negatives that IGA deficiencies can generate in the tTG-IGA antibody test.
