Yesterday I read on the 'gluten free foods, products, shopping, and medication' section of this forum that Kellogg Yogos and Kellogg Fruit snacks are not longer gluten free. Here's a link to the thread (if the link doesn't work, it's the "Celcelia's Gluten Free Product Alert" thread).

http://www.celiac.co...showtopic=62962

I know my 5 year old was eating Yogos 2-3 times a week as a treat until last week when I decided he was getting to many treats.

There are a lot of items on the list ... they are items that were listed as gluten-free in Cecelia's Marketplace shopping guide, but have now been tested and considered not gluten-free.

Just thought I'd pass the info along to others who might give them to your kids as a treat.

Thanks so much for posting this. I have always given my daughter Yogos thinking they were ok so I decided to check the Kelloggs website. This is posted under FAQs on the Canadian site:

Question:
Gluten: Does Kellogg's* produce a gluten-free product?

Answer:
As a leader in the food industry, we fully understand and are aware of the special dietary needs of many people. While we do market a wide variety of cereals to meet consumers varying taste preferences and nutritional needs, we do not manufacture a gluten-free product. All of our products contain a natural wheat and/or malt which both contain gluten.

Guess that makes it easy, don't buy any Kelloggs products.

That is for Canada. If you live in the US, they are still safe. I just looked at the website.

This is the Kellogg nutrition statement about gluten and wheat ... it does sound like a CYA comment, but at least it's honest!

Which of your products is gluten- or wheat-free?
At this time, we do not offer products suitable for consumers on a gluten- or wheat-free diet. All of our products are produced in facilities that also manufacture wheat-containing products. We cannot guarantee that any products are 100% gluten- or wheat-free.

Kellogg's® Eggo™ Syrup and Kellogg's™ Fruit Flavored Snacks are formulated gluten and wheat-free and may be acceptable for consumers on restricted diets. However, these products are produced in facilities that also manufacture other products that contain wheat. Consumers have varying sensitivities to gluten, and although we follow approved standardized manufacturing practices, some consumers are so sensitive that even wheat dust that may be in the product can result in a reaction. Therefore, we do not have any products that are gluten-free.

Kellogg's® Corn Pops and Kellogg's® Rice Krispies might be suitable, depending on gluten sensitivity. Corn Pops have a very small amount of wheat starch added, and Rice Krispies have a small amount of malt flavoring, made from barley. Check with your personal physician to determine if these products are suitable for you.

Yogos and the Fruit Snacks were removed from the Cecelia's Marketplace list (from their 2008/2009 book) as of 10/15/2009. I emailed them to see if there was any more information that could be passed on about the snacks and I will post it if I hear back.

Here is the response that I received from Cecelia's Marketplace about Yogos, fruit snacks, and other items ....

Thank you for contacting Cecelia’s Marketplace and informing us of Kellogg’s Yogos “gluten-free” status. When doing our research for the New 2009/2010 gluten-free Grocery Shopping Guide (May 2009-Sept 2009), Kellogg’s could not guarantee that any of their products were gluten-free anymore, due to possibility of cross-contamination. Now according to their website, they have changed that status once again.

Their website reads:

At this time, we do not offer any cereal, waffle, cookie, cracker, or vegetarian products suitable for consumers on a gluten-free diet.

Kellogg's® Eggo™ Syrup, Kellogg's™ Fruit Flavored Snacks, Kellogg's™ Yogos®, Kellogg's™ Special K2O™ Protein Water Mixes, and Kellogg's™ Special K™ Protein Shakes do not have any gluten-containing ingredients and may be acceptable for consumers on restricted diets.

We greatly appreciate your input and will confirm with Kellogg’s the gluten-free status once again and make any the necessary adjustments on our Product Alerts page.

Sincerely,

Sales
