Passing Blood Clots

Hello,

I had a negative biopsy a while back, although the specilist did say there was some inflammation, i was diagnosed with IBS. Since then i have'nt been gluten free (im a student and really cant afford it). The last few days i have been passing blood clots/balls. The first day i had urgency and went to the toilet separte from my stools was a ball of blood. I went on to have diarrhoea 3 more times that day and felt very week and hot for an hour. last night i woke up with stomach cramps/pain and this morning i had muesli for breakfast i straight away had stomach pain and urgency however i only passed wind and another blood clot no stool, one minute later i had urgency again and passed a bigger ball of blood (about the size of two peas) 3minutes laster i had urgency and passed a stool (no blood). Since then i have stomach pain (mild-moderate) for 3hours ongoing, i have taken co-codamol but can still feel it.

Im really worried about this blood, has anyone with celiac experienced this. My mum has had bowel problems all her life (never been tested for celiac) three years ago she heamorrhaged from her bowel and they never found a course she lost pints of blood and was critical, it hasn't happened since.

Is bleeding a symptom of celiac because i'm sure this cant be IBS i think thats just my specialist's way out as i havnt had an endoscopy and only a gastroscopy down my throat with four biopsies. The bleeding is not a completely new things i have had blood running through the cracks of my stools since march but not clots/balls.

I have been checked for heamrroids (poor spelling).

Any information would be great thank you.

Emma

It would be a good idea to check with your personal physician on this...there are many reasons why persons pass blood clots...

Many times they want to do a Colonoscopy to check up on things... just a look see up there to make sure things are "A OK"....

Bleeding like that can be caused by hemorrhoids, polyps and other conditions...so it is very important that your Dr. know this...

Hope you feel better...

Thanks for the reply

I have spoken to my specialist's secretary today as he is not in till tomorrow and hopefully he will bring my appointment forward from january. I have already been checked for hemorrhoids although im not sure what polyps is?

Is this not a symptom of celiacs then?

I am not a Dr but I have not heard of this as a symptom of Celiac. I would strongly urge you to see your dr asap. Better safe than sorry! Go to your school's health center if you cant get in to see your doctor.

My best friend has Ulcerative Colitis...started when she was 24. If you look it up it is common to flare or start in your 20's to 30's. She had a colonoscopy that confirmed it. She would have a little blood in her stool - but always the "urgency". That is one of the big indicators even if you do not produce alot - the urgency along with mucous or blood in the stool. She said she was told not to eat things that were hard to digest such as corn or seeds as well. She is otherwise very healthy. You should google search it and see if you have any similarities then bring it up to the doc.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply, i have wondered about this and have called my specialist and will be requesting a colonoscopy. My stomach pain has not gone away all day which is unusual for me and i have taken 30/500 cocodamol. As their was inflammation on the biopsy im wondering if my large bowel is inflammed too and IBD could be the problem. The only thing is when i think about these things part of my mind always flicks back the the positive celiac blood test. The urgency blood and mucus has been the main syptoms for months along with bad wind pains and stomach cramps. Does your friend get stomach pain? i notice in your signature you have IBS how are my symtoms in relation to yours?

If you had a postive blood test you are celiac. Inflammation can often be found on the endo and the damage to the villi can be spotty and missed with the biopsies. You should have been told to give the diet a strict try after the endo. There are no false positives on blood tests but lots of false negatives. I would get on the diet ASAP.

I did have a great deal of mucous before diagnosis but for me the bleeding and passing clots didn't start until after I had been gluten-free for a while. Now when I get glutened I usually pass clots for about 3 days. I don't think it is a common symptom though. You do need to get it checked out, and IMHO you need also to get on the diet.

Hi, just thought i'd give you all an update.

I went to see my specialist yesterday as an emergency visit, due to concern over the blood clots. He felt my tummy and said he would like to do some more blood tests and an ultrasound and colonoscopy. His train of thought at the moment is that it could be inflammatory bowel disease crohns/ulcerative colitis. I asked him about the positive blood test for celiac to see if it could mean anything else and he informed me that a positive for this test could also point to inflammatory bowel disease. I had read this in research yesterday, was anybody else aware of this?

Ravenwoodglass, i believe that the positive blood test means something too and if the next investigations dont show anything up im going to go with a gluten free diet, even though it does cost a packet (better than feeling like this). First id like to get the blood clot situation checked out as iv been informed this is not really a symptom of celiac.

Thanks for all your advice and comments

Emma

Glad your doctor is helping with this. If you are done with testing for celiac you can start the diet anytime. You don't have to wait until after the colonscopy as that is not a test for celiac. If by any chance the issue is gluten related you may find you have relief before they even scope.

Hi Scott, yes I have had symptoms for years and this is the second GI I have seen and he could not believe I have never been tested. He called later today and I am scheduled for an endoscopy. Is there a way to tell how severe my potential celiac is from the results above? What are the chances I will have the biopsy and come back negative and we have to keep searching for a cause?
    • Aussienae
I agree christina, there is definitely many contributing factors! I have the pain today, my pelvis, hips and thighs ache! No idea why. But i have been sitting at work for 3 days so im thinking its my back. This disease is very mysterious (and frustrating) but not always to blame for every pain.

"her stool study showed she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that." The wording of this part of the sentence does not make any sense at all. I don't mean to insult you, but is English your first language? This part of the sentence sounds like it was generated by translation software.
    • trents
What kind of stool test was done? Can you be more specific?
    • mishyj
Perhaps I should also have said that in addition to showing a very high response to gluten, her stool study showed that she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that.
