Having Chocolate Cravings Bad

The last month or so I have been having chocolate cravings bad, I mean BAAADD. I have to eat something choclaty every day. I have a sugar sensitivity so I have to be really carefull how much I eat. But, dadgum it, this is getting to be rediculous.

Does anybody have a clue as to why this is happening? Is there someting that i'm not getting in my diet? I'm taking my vitamins, folate, magnesium, etc. I eat a LOT of protein, salads, etc. Very wide variety, but not a lot of gluten free processed foods because I have gluten reactions with those too. I guess I am super sensitive.

I've been doing real good, last dr's visit, I am no longer anemic after 35 years, I have officially lost 30 lbs. Went from 205 to 175, WooHoo! And my cholesterol went from 285 down to 150. YES! My fibro has eased up some, my RA has eased up. My depression, anxiety, asthma and all of my stomach problems are gone. But this chocolate craving is driving me up the wall. I eat grapes, peanut butter, pears, oranges, I even eat honey but all of that still dosen't help. I can't eat apples or bananas, those seem to bother me.

Anyone have any clues? Thanks for listening.

So why not eat some chocolate each day??? I do :D That is one craving that does not go away for me either. Even if it is only a chocolate biscotti... I don't see any harm ;)

You could try adding a multi vitamin that has Chromium in it. Chromium assists with cravings.

I have to say however, a bit of chocolate everyday sounds like a plan to me! :D

If sugar is a worry, get some extra dark-85% chocolate-check the labels for sugar content, and dip it in coconut oil or unsweetened p.b.. Yum!

Yep - I eat chocolate every day too. I like the Lindt 73% (I think that is the percentage - it's an odd number), and Wegman's 70% is pretty good. But I only have two squares.

I read some years ago that a sweet at the end of the meal marks the end of it in the brain...maybe that is just conditioning for this culture, but I'm not arguing! I just had a gluten free (woohoo) chocolate chip cookie to end my very early lunch, and I feel very satisfied and like the meal is over. :D So it's not all bad!

I say Enjoy Life's boom choco boom dark chocolate bars. OMG they are so good. I don't taste a difference in these in comparison to other dark chocolates...plus there is only three ingredients and it's ALL allergen free! If you have a local store that sells organic or gluten/wheat free stuff, they may carry it. Mine does! I wasn't supposed to, but during my last cycle (when I crave chocolate so bad it's insane) I bought a bar.

Oh, on a side note, I looked up ingredients that are in Hershey's chocolate. My goodness, I am NOT sad that I cannot eat it anymore. I was grossed out when half the stuff contained the words, "brown or yellowish fatty substance..."

Yep. Used to be I could have sweets around and not have any urge to splurge. Since going gluten-free I can't leave chocolate alone! I try to not keep any in the house...but I can't stand it. Gotta have it. I have no idea why. I didn't have any cravings when I was pregnant!!! (Of course...I was very ill for 8 months, too). I have never had a problem with cravings until the last year or so. I say...go with it! As long as you are not harming yourself :D

There are mood altering chemicals (in small, but nontrivial, amounts) in chocolate. It may really just be you're craving chocolate because you haven't had chocolate. If you get a GOOD dark chocolate, a very small amount (like a quarter of a serving), eaten slowly (I never knew people chewed their chocolate - really - let it melt in your mouth instead) can be a great "fix" while giving you a handful (4-8g) of sugar. I like Endangered Species, Seeds of Change, Blanxart, and a number of other 'premium' chocolates that are mildly harder to find (Domori is my favorite).

I eat the Lindt 73% also because it has no soy lecithin. :D

Thanks everyone,

It's just irritating in a way because I never used to crave chocolate unless it was that time of the month. Now it's every day and I am tired of it and I never thought I would get to the point of not wanting any. I thought maybe there was something out there that would curb my cravings.

Beware of Lindt it's not gluten free, unless it's different in NZ - it may contain traces of gluten due to a lot of their chocolate containing Barley.

Cote D'or is gluten free I just discovered and they do some great dark chocolate.

Me too..I know the feeling! I can easily munch my way through a large amount of chocolate in an afternoon! Maybe get your iron levels checked, I'm suspecting that's my problem. Also slight dehydration can be mistaken for hunger and sweet cravings.

I've just bought myself Cote D'or 85% cocoa bar and am hoping just having a square a day will pacify my cravings. One square contains 1.6 grams of sugar so maybe that would be okay for you? Chocolate has some good health and psychological benefits so maybe you just need those right now.

I second and third the chocolate Lara Bars. I can now find them here although I brought a bunch back with me, and they are my snack when I spend the day in town running errands (I live in a rural area).

Chocolate is yummy but I have to limit it or I still get acne. You might look at whether you're getting enough fat or just calories in general?

    • Thanks, I'll check that out. I may have to apply for my own Medicare card in order to get any kind of coeliac-testing done beyond the screen (see above post.)  No, nobody has even mentioned it. I'm unsure if my doctor knows that I do not need to use my hands to vomit, or if she knows about the involuntary vomiting.  I have a part time job at McDonald's and make around $150 per week, which is how I afford to smoke. Mostly, I spend my money on (generally gluten-containing) binge food and cigarettes. I did attempt to start saving money, but then my shifts were cut at work - which meant I had more time to study, but no money, which was kind of pointless. It's complicated. Here in Australia, cigarettes are $25 per pack. These aren't fancy cigarettes either, just your run-of-the-mill Marlboro 20s. Thanks for caring. I am trying to stop I've had the vomiting thing all my life, way before I started smoking. And no, I'm not sure. I know he had an endoscopy and the flattened villi, but I'm not sure if he got a blood test - I assume he would have done, don;t know if it was the full panel. Supposedly he has this FODMAP thing, which I'll admit that I know next to nothing about. Interestingly, people who have to follow low-FODMAP or no-FODMAP diets can't eat gluten either, so there's that. 
    • Would a coeliac screen be the same as a test for antibodies, then? I have no idea why it was even included in my list of tests. It could be my brother, or my symptoms, or both - regardless, I can't say I know too much about the testing.  It's possible that my brother has coeliac disease, I really do worry about it sometimes. He was told to follow a strict low-FODMAP diet by his doctor, and eventually my parents stopped caring. Occasionally they will remind him not to eat things like pasta, greasy foods, etc. because of his condition, but by and large they don't care. He basically just eats whatever he wants. I'm not sure if it affects him or not. However, he isn't shorter than other family members - my dad is 183cm, and my brother is 178cm at the age of 14. Our mother is 173cm.  I do think I have bad digestion, yes. I get gassy and very bloated often, as well as constipated phases (and then following that, diarrhea phases.)  I have tried to ask my mum to call the doctor to get the tests done, but I'm hesitant to mention anything to do with gluten as I know they won't believe me, solely because a good friend of mine has celiac disease. I know they'll think I'm doing it for attention, or to be trendy, when in actual fact I'm just tired of being sick and having no explanation for it other than diet. I'm positive it's not dairy, as I was vegan for a couple of months at one stage. When I went back to eating animal products, I had no issues whatsoever. 
    • He had the IgG ELISA done as well as other blood panels, fecal and saliva tests. He is on an elimination diet right now where foods that score above 0.2 are eliminated for 2-6 months depending on the score, then added back slowly after the detox period.  I am aware that there is a lot of controversy over the IgG, and I'm not here to go into that issue, but I can say with certainty that eliminating the additional foods he reacted to has seen a huge reduction in the symptoms that persisted after cutting gluten and dairy. We will be attempting to add rice back in around October, and see how he does but until then I still need a solution for a baking mix.  I tried to wing it a bit with pumpkin bread today and my attempt was okay but not great. The loaf sank a bit and was overly chewy.  So, to my original question....recipes?
    • Ask the doctor's office!  But usually you can eat right after if you feel like it.  But ask them!  Some of them will try to give you crackers, so you may want to bring some gluten-free applesauce or Rice Chex
    • I'm wondering if he doesn't have an oat problem. He was only dx'd several months ago and really shouldn't use oats for a year after dx. Just thinking out loud. I too am wondering how the rice was picked out of all those other flours to be determined to be affecting him.
