Did Anyone Ever Develope A Chronic Cough While On Gluten?

I was thinking back over any symptoms that I may have experienced as a result of gluten in my lifetime. It just occurred to me that as a adolescent I developed a chronic cough for one entire year. It was a result of eating poorly (McDonald's)and I would cough horribly all day long except when I slept. When I saw my mom again several months later, she put me back on a healthy diet (and it was also mostly gluten free) and the cough went away within a week. It never returned.

I was thinking this could have been edema in the lungs (tiny amount of fluid collecting in the lungs). It was a pretty bad cough.

Has anyone ever experienced this?

I had chronic bronchitis from childhood and developed asthma a few years before I was diagnosed. Both were attributed to first my Mom's smoking and then my own. Within a relatively short time gluten-free both were gone. I think they both may have been due to chronic inflammation, which I had big time and all over prediagnosis.

I have coughed for years. The pulmonary doc said I have "cough asthma" The cough is way better after just a short time gluten free.

I had a cough up until recently and now I'm on some strong iron pills, and the cough has vanished!

i had pneumonia 4 times (2 in one year) with bouts of bronchitis every few months. from the last ct scan they said i have calcifications on my lungs which is likely due to the chronic bronchitis/pnuemonia. if i caught a cold which was pretty often, it always seemed to jump into my lungs. hopefully that won't be happening anymore. i absolutely think the inflammation from gluten and lung issues go hand in hand.

I've had a chronic cough for more than half my life. The first time I went gluten-free (about 2 years ago) my cough got so bad I was wetting myself. I guess it was just a withdrawal thing because after 2 weeks of that it stopped and for the first time in years I wasn't coughing on a daily basis. I just started my diet back up so hopefully I'll see it go away completely.

Yes I have and its the worst. I have changed my diet to everything gluten free but I am still having a strong cough. I drink plenty of water, hot tea, and even prescribed cough syrup but I am still coughing. I don't know what to do. Are there any suggestions?

I also have issues with dairy.  It is not digestive.  I get wheezy, cough and feel congested.  I also get joint pain.  I do not have an allergy though.  So maybe try eliminating that if you still have the cough.

Brandon,

get your doctor to prescribe albuterol inhaler, a couple sprays of that a day should do the trick, if not,dr. may need to prescribe the albuterol followed up with symbicort inhaler.i do these two when I have the cough, and finally have it under control(when I say I had a cough, I mean I had a cough! uncontrollable once it started.it would go away for a couple hours, then come back on.)

Interesting - were you iron deficient? I have a chronic dry cough/celiac diagnosis years ago/ gluten free diet/iron normal.  When I first was diagnosed I was severely iron deficient but now my iron is back up to normal. Just wondering if I took extra iron If cough would disappear?

You need to be careful with iron supplementation. Too much iron in your system can be toxic to organs. If you are taking an iron supplement but not anemic then please have ferritin levels monitored regularly. Iron can also cause stomach upset and constipation, though the chelated forms protect against that somewhat.

Perhaps I should also have said that in addition to showing a very high response to gluten, her stool study showed that she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that.

My daughter has celiac disease and has had for a long time. She fell loses strictly gluten-free diet and recently got rid of all cutting boards in any gluten in her house at all. She just had a stool test and it came back showing of gigantic response to gluten in her diet. What could be going on since she doesn't eat any gluten and is very careful about any kind of hidden glue? Help!

I think sometimes the pain described here can be a result of a sort of 'perfect storm' of contributing factors.  Recently I had an appalling bout of lower back pain, lower burning gut pain and what felt like cramps.  I then started to think about what could have caused it and I realised it was several things that had set it off: I'd been carrying heavy luggage (back strain); I had been sitting down in a car for too long and wearing a tight belt (I have pudendal nerve issues and sacroiliac issues and this exacerbates the pain), and I had bloating and burning pain in my colon caused by eating too much soy, latte and caffeine, I guess putting further pressure in the lower abdomen.  I had this same pain prior to my diagnosis and a couple of years post-diagnosis, I'd quite forgotten how unpleasant it was.

HI @Kirbyqueen That's great news your insurance will be kicking in soon.  Sorry to see that you have been dealing with this for six months now, but I do hope you have managed to find some relief with some of the suggestions in the meantime. Perhaps come back and let us know what the doctor says. Cristiana

I agree, and hopefully your doctor will contact you soon about the next step, which will likely be an endoscopy to confirm your diagnosis. Do you have celiac disease symptoms?
