Antacids Etc

I have been looking for gluten-free products to counteract stomach acidity. Tums does not appear on any list I've seen (due to maltodextrin?, starch?). Nor does Prilosec (starch?). I have told by my doctor not to use Pink Bismuth (due to its coating effects on the stomach walls). There must be plenty of others but I could not find them on the Clan-Thompson list - I guess you need to know the names first. Suggestions? Thanks!

Andrew

Do you have a gluten free medications list? That may help you...the delphi list has an extensive one.

Also here is this sites meds list:

https://www.celiac.com/st_prod.html?p_prodi...-46105145006.85

There is also one on glutenfreedrugs.com

Tums does not use gluten as a filler but they will not guarantee that their suppliers ingredients are gluten free.

Thanks, Kaiti. Actually, I did have that list via the Celiac.com homepage. It is what what enabled me to see that Prilosec was not there. The trouble is, it does not tell which of the products on this list are antacids or have the same efffect. And, as someone who (up to now) ever took any drugs, I am just not up to date aboout what is out there. Experience willl change all that but, for now, I have to shop around to see what works and has no side effects.

But thanks!

Andrew

The only thing I take is Pepto Bismol and I very rarely take that.

I know there are side effects to about everything you take but given some are worse then others.

I'm sure someone can help you out in this part of things more then I can...this isn't really my area of expertise..

I live in Canada so perhaps you should double check in which ever country you live in but I just confirmed last week from the company that Rolaids Multi-Symptom Antacid & Antigas is indeed gluten free. The product code if you needed to check is: 60245 20044. 1-800-661-4659

Hope this helps......

I decided to check the Delphi list about it since you mentioned it in your post. I found out some good news :D

Prilosec OTC (1-800-759-4841) (vp=01/25/05)

"Prilosec does not contain ingredients from gluten containing grains. It is gluten-free"

Hmmm! I wonder why it made Delphi but not Clan Thompson or the Celiac.com lists.

By the way, the reason I was given for not using Pepto-Bismol was that by coating stomch walls it may interfere with recovering villi.

Some lists are just different then others and cover things that others may not.

Thanks for sharing what your doctor said about Pepto Bismol...it's nice to know that for future references :D

Perrigo Labs makes a store-brand of Zantac 75 that is gluten-free also. I don't have the problem every day but when it do it is nasty. I keep this around to cut it off at the pass.

I'm pretty sure that in stores, you can find plenty of gluten-free options. But they are usually a bit more expensive.

Hello @BunnyBrown and welcome to the forum. I cannot say that I have had the procedure you describe, but recently I did have general surgery and was routinely intubated.  That pain was what troubled me most after the operation, far more than the operation site.  It took a few days to really settle down, I was quite badly bruised. It was taking so long I was a bit concerned so asked the question on another forum. A few patients came back to me and said they had suffered the same.  I imagine in my own case possibly the throat got bashed about a bit,  maybe they had difficult inserting the tube?  I've suffered with a painful throat post-endoscopy too, but never as long as the intubation pain.   I hope you will be feeling better very soon.   PS BTW - love the name!  I saw this today in an Easter display in a shop and your name reminded me of it.🙂

This wonderful, Anne. I think you have a point about why people disappear off forums.  I found the first few years post diagnosis a real struggle and frankly wondered if I would ever feel better (not to dishearten people, but just to say it can take a while longer for some folk to heal).  However, once my antibodies were back within normal range it really has made a big difference to my health.  I've chosen to stick around because I'm a Mod, otherwise I might have been one of those that disappeared, too!
