Carnegie Deli, Dallas Bbq In Nyc

My daughter is traveling with a school group to New York, and they are scheduled to eat at the Carnegie Deli and Dallas BBQ. Does anyone know of any gluten free options at either of these places? She is a little intimidated about asking for gluten-free foods, and I am trying to make it as easy as possible for her.

Also, if anyone happens to know of any breakfast spots that would be good within walking distance of Sheraton Manhattan at Times Square (W. 73nd St., Central Park West and Columbus) please let me know. She has plenty of breakfast bars packed, but if there is anything gluten-free around it would be great to know.

Thanks for any help.

The upper west side is difficult, as are breakfast places in the city. (I know of only one restaurant in the city that serves gluten-free breakfast: Friedman's, which is in the Chelsea Market....16th St + 9th Ave.)

Fairway, a large supermarket on 74th and Broadway, has a very nice gluten-free aisle up on the 2nd floor. They also have a restaurant that serves a nice breakfast, but i don't think any of it is specifically gluten-free.

I would call Dallas BBQ and Carnegie Deli to see if they have anything she can eat.

Good luck!

Danny

Actually the UWS (Upper West Side) has a couple places. Cafe 82 is a diner type restaurant that serves gluten-free breakfast, lunch and dinner. It's located on 82nd and Broadwy which isn't to far from that location. Nice Matin is also in the area. They are on 79th on the corner of Amsterdam, just off Broadway. It's a tiny bit pricey, but very good and they do have a gluten free menu. I think there is another breakfast spot near there but I can't remember what it is. If she's looking for dinner options near there, in additon to Cafe 82 and Nice Matin there is Sambuca, Pizzeria Uno and I believe a few new places that have started gluten free menus. That said, Times Square is not near the UWS.

As far as Carnegie Deli and Dallas BBQ; I tried looking into Dallas BBQ a year or so ago and wasn't able to find out if anything was gluten free. I used to love that place pre-gluten-free and I'm not sure how safe it would be. In my opinion it's the type of place that has a lot of potential for cross contamination. Carnegie Deli should be pretty easy. I've never been, but any of the cold cuts should be safe and she should be able to get them on a plate or in an omlette. Maybe she can bring a couple slices of her own bread and make a sandwich with the cold cuts. Make sure she knows that potato pancakes are not gluten free. They have matzo meal in them.

Hope she has fun.

Thank you both for your help. I will add what I learned, too, in case anyone in the future does a search with a similar question. Carnegie Deli was worried about cross contamination in their sliced meats, but recommended the tuna and chicken salads. Dallas BBQ said their roasted chicken is safe, and recommended asking for a baked potato instead of the fries. My daughter also did go to Sambuca, and LOVED their gluten free pasta.

Been there twice. Once had an omelette, no toast and another time one of the salads, hold the croutons. Had no problems. They have tons of salads and omelettes on the menu. If the hotel includes breakfast, most we have stayed at in NY offer a continental breakfast but it isn't only bagels and danish. They all had yogurts, instant oatmeal and fruits on the small breakfast buffet. I'd call the hotel and ask.

PS: The Carnegie Deli menu is available on line so you can go over it together before she leaves.

Hi Scott, yes I have had symptoms for years and this is the second GI I have seen and he could not believe I have never been tested. He called later today and I am scheduled for an endoscopy. Is there a way to tell how severe my potential celiac is from the results above? What are the chances I will have the biopsy and come back negative and we have to keep searching for a cause?

I agree christina, there is definitely many contributing factors! I have the pain today, my pelvis, hips and thighs ache! No idea why. But i have been sitting at work for 3 days so im thinking its my back. This disease is very mysterious (and frustrating) but not always to blame for every pain.

"her stool study showed she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that." The wording of this part of the sentence does not make any sense at all. I don't mean to insult you, but is English your first language? This part of the sentence sounds like it was generated by translation software.

What kind of stool test was done? Can you be more specific?
    • mishyj
Perhaps I should also have said that in addition to showing a very high response to gluten, her stool study showed that she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that.
