Could Constipation And Bloating Be Symptoms?

HI,

I'M RUNNING OUT OF OPTIONS. FIRST, I ELIMINATED MILK PRODUCTS FROM MY DIET AND I'M STILL EXHIBITING CONSTIPATION, GAS, AND BLOATING ;) . COULD A GLUTEN INTOLORANCE BE AS A RESULT OR ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF GLUTEN INTOLORANCE MORE SEVERE? :unsure: THANKS

When I eat gluten I gain weight, get gas and bloating. The symptoms of gluten intolerance can vary widely from one person to the next. Have you eliminated all gluten from your diet?

There are over 200 symptoms associated with celiac. Each person is different and may have different symptoms. They are both symptoms that can come with it. I get constipation along with some other symptoms when I am glutened.

Have you been tested for celiac? Have you tried being off of gluten? Make sure when you test you keep on gluten.

These are the same symptoms I have, and I had positive blood work. Still two more weeks till I get a definitive diagnose, but I definitely think these can be symptoms.

These were my symptoms also. Look to see if it happens more frequently after eating. I was bloated non-stop but it would get worse after my huge morning bowl of All Bran, man was i killing myself or what.

My symptoms did get worse over time, but that was how this whole thing got started.

Those were exactly my symptoms as well. I had positive bloodwork, and I just got a biopsy done last week. I started a Gluten free diet before getting the biopsy, so I know it will be inaccurate, but being gluten-free is the ONLY thing that has worked for me. Actually, I am on a special gluten-free diet, the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (www.breakingtheviciouscycle.com). So far, so good!

Me, too! When I told my doc about my lifelong constipation and increasing gas, bloating and intestinal pain, she labeled me 'IBS' and gave me the IBS diet sheet which suggested eating more whole grains and bran cereals. So I faithfully ate my Shredded Wheat with Bran and Lactaid Milk every morning. Little did I know that I was gluten AND CASEIN intolerant. So avoiding lactose did nothing to relieve my symptoms and following my doc's advice did everything to exacerbate my symptoms. :o I later tested positive for gluten and casein intolerance and the celiac gene through Enterolab. So I showed those test results to my doc at my next exam. She told me 'ibs' was an 'elimination' label. If docs think they have eliminated all other sources of abdominal symptoms, they give patients the 'ibs' label. Unfortunately she and most docs don't do much 'elimination' research before labeling their patients' symptoms as IBS. <_<

Although following a gluten-free/df/sf (I'm soy intolerant too) diet has eliminated most of my symptoms, I'm still paranoid about constipation which can happen if I accidentally consume dairy (more so than gluten). Before I was diagnosed with celiac disease, my longterm constipation caused painful hemorrhoids which necessitated even more painful hemorrhoid surgery and recovery.

Abstaining from dairy also resolved my lifelong sinus allergies and infections. All those years I was told I was allergic to plants, trees, grasses, molds, dust, etc. We even bought a special vacuum cleaner which actually collects the particles rather than blowing them back into the room. Now we're lucky if the house gets vacuumed once a month and I can BREATHE all summer long with only occasional sneezing. :D

I'm going to be scoped next week, and I thought this conversation was interesting, because I've always thought diarrhea and wasting was indicative of celiac disease. I experience constipation whenever I eat wheat or rye, and I also gain weight. The more I eat, the worse it gets. I'm bulking up on wheat products prior to the scopes, and I'm really getting bloated!

    • Marip, Have you been diagnosed with celiac disease or Non-celiac Gluten Intolerance?  I notice you joined in 2014.  Did you ever go guten free?  How can we help?   Sorry, I'm not a stool expert!  You could Google it...  Malabsorption?  Standard lab tests that check for anemia and vitamin deficiencies, etc.  should help make that diagnosis.  
    • You can eat just a slice or two (or equivalent) of bread a day for accurate testing.   I understand about the high deductibles.  We're self-employed and we pay for our health insurance. 
    • Sure, if it's gluten free, then fine.  I am very allergic (like anaphylactic) to ibuprofen and aspirin.  So, in my case, I would just tough it out.  Go to bed.  Sleep it off.....eventually. My money is on the garlic and onions.  I can't consume those either (damn that zonulin/leaky gut -- google it along with Dr. Fasano).  I just season with salt, pepper.  Boring.  But no gut issues.  I'm hoping like my lactose intolerance (resolved), that I will get garlic and onions back.   Finally, sometimes just eating anything can hurt when you still have intestinal damage.  Hopefully, you'll feel better in two or three hours if it's celiac related.  Longer if it's an intolerance (leaky gut thing....) Hugs!      
    • I read on their website that all Advil is gluten free, I had such bad pinching cramping today(which I don't why since I prepared all my food at home today.) I made a pot roast, salt garlic, onions...No gluten but still pain, That's the only thing I ate today..I don't eat breakfast or anything.   Anyways.   Is it a good idea to take Advil for the cramping? That's how I would describe it like someone is reaching inside me and pinching me and twisting my insides.    This is what I took  
    • I'll give my PCP a call tomorrow and see what they can offer. My only worry is the expense as anymore tests will put me behind in being able to afford to see the GI. I have high deductible insurance but get money put into my HSA. I'm still trying to pay off the CT scan though. Which is why I'm trying to pick and choose which poses the greatest risk for me right now and what can wait. (Though I would prefer not to wait on any of it.)

      I really do hope its only IBS. Though I always worry IBS is more or less a doctors way of saying "I have no clue" at that point. :C

      Again, I'll be sure to give my PCP a call tomorrow then and see what the options are. I can feel a lot better trying the blood work first. however, once that is done, do I still need to be on a gluten diet before the endoscopy? Also, is it ok if I still mildly reduce the gluten. As in, can I avoid a whole wheat pasta dinner, but still be eating the peanut butter crackers? That sort of thing. Again I guess that is more of a doctor related question. I just wasn't sure if in order to raise your chance, you have to mass consume gluten or not. (Its already in just about everything to begin with.)   --Edit--
      I just now reread the part that you still need to be on the gluten foods even for biopsy so I'll be sure to do that too.
