A family member unknowingly gave my son a wheat coated french fry on Friday. He is still having loose poos. How long do typical reactions last?

Thanks!

Reactions will vary for each person. But the length of the reaction may depend on the amount he had. Some people react for a few weeks. The last time I believe I was

glutened, I was feeling the effects for almost 2 weeks. However I think I was contaminated for a few days so that may be why I took so long to get better.

My reactions seem to range from a few days (4) to nearly two weeks. And my reactions seem to be different every time. Or have different themes - sometimes it's emotional/painful joints, sometimes it's IBS, sometimes it's bad mood and migraine. I never know what to expect!

Around a week seems to be pretty standard.

I believe my 3 year old is finally over her reaction....and it lasted around two weeks. It was our first major reaction since going on the diet. She didn't get full on diarrhea, but her stools were dark and had a powerful odor. She also was very tired, irritable, and for the first week seemed to be in so much pain she had me scared to death. She would hold her head and scream, and would just lay around the house all day half asleep. It was just so weird and sporadic. She would seem to be in terrible pain, then all of the sudden she would perk up. So, I would think it was over. Then it would just hit her again and knock her out. I never did find the culprit, but we've had several accidents in the past month, so maybe it was a cummulative effect??? I dunno...still figuring things out!

The one good thing about this awful and long reaction, is that my parents saw how much pain she was in, and now realize how serious celiac can be. It also got me to check and double check everything that goes into her mouth and onto her body! I hope your little boy's reaction is over soon...it is so hard to watch them suffer when you can't do anything to help.

I get horrible pain like that too. The pain is right where my stomach is, probably where the stomach meets the intestine. I'm guessing the pain comes from the antibodies attacking the intestinal wall. My pain gets really intense... to the point that I litterally can't move, then it goes away for a bit... and just when I think it's gone for good, the pain comes back and hits me even worse! I've broken bones, sprained joints, ect. and none of those pains can compare to it, it's really quite paralyzing for me.

It's super embarressing when it happens in front of people.

Geez, this is making me remember when my son was diagnosed. He'd just turned three and he'd been in writhing pain for 2months. It was awful. I never want to revisit those days again!

Hope your little one gets to feeling better soon. Our reactions can last anywhere from a few days to a few months according to how much we got into. A simple french fry kind of thing would usually take two or three days to fully kick in and then be a problem for a couple of weeks or so. If we get into several small things like that over a period of time, the effect seems to be cumulative and the reaction worse each time.

Hi Scott, yes I have had symptoms for years and this is the second GI I have seen and he could not believe I have never been tested. He called later today and I am scheduled for an endoscopy. Is there a way to tell how severe my potential celiac is from the results above? What are the chances I will have the biopsy and come back negative and we have to keep searching for a cause?

I agree christina, there is definitely many contributing factors! I have the pain today, my pelvis, hips and thighs ache! No idea why. But i have been sitting at work for 3 days so im thinking its my back. This disease is very mysterious (and frustrating) but not always to blame for every pain.

"her stool study showed she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that." The wording of this part of the sentence does not make any sense at all. I don't mean to insult you, but is English your first language? This part of the sentence sounds like it was generated by translation software.

What kind of stool test was done? Can you be more specific?
    • mishyj
Perhaps I should also have said that in addition to showing a very high response to gluten, her stool study showed that she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that.
