I was getting better on the gluten-free/df diet when about 2 years ago I took antibiotics for a tooth infection. Over the next year I lost weight and went back to a very limited diet. The SCD helped but eventually I realized I had intestinal overgrowths of Candida and several bacteria. I was able to reduce the overgrowth problems but my digestion did not improve evry much. I remembered that one food I could eat when I would had problems before I was diagnosed was watermelon. So I began eating about 1/2 watermelon a day and over the past several months my digestive problems have improved and I've been able to gain about 10 lbs. so I have gone from gaunt, emaciated to just rather thin. I ate as much as I could of my regular diet amd used goat milk kefir for probiotics.

There is a weight loss Watermelon diet that seems to work well for many people.

Which bacterial infections did you develop after taking the antibiotics? I also had Candida (which I successfully treated with Nystatin) and 5 different bacterial (overgrowth) infections including Klebsiella, Enterobacter Cloaecae, Clostridium difficile (C-diff), Achromobacter and H. Pylori. I've successfully eliminated all of those with various drug or botanical treatments.

Were your infections diagnosed by stool test? Have you retested recently?

Hello @brian1 I'm a UK based Moderator here on the forum.  If you are British, you may find that in your region you might be able to get certain gluten-free food (usually staples like bread) on prescription.  I recommend you ring Coeliac UK for the most up-to-date advice on this. https://www.coeliac.org.uk/home/ There is some advice here for UK coeliacs which might also be of use, on how to best navigate the gluten-free diet on a budget. https://www.coeliac.org.uk/information-and-support/living-gluten-free/the-gluten-free-diet/gluten-free-diet-on-a-budget/ I am afraid I don't know anything about the benefits you mention but maybe the charity can help? Legumes can be a source of wheat contamination, but I assume that you use versions labelled "gluten-free."

You may want to look into Benfotiamine, which is the fat soluble version of B1.

Be sure all testing is completed before going gluten-free, that is, unless you are certain that gluten is the culprit and have decided not to eat it again. This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):
