Mythbusters Gluten Submission Campaign

Someone on another site brought up how cool it would be to see cross contamination and gluten featured on mythbusters. My kids love the idea and asked me to get everyone I can to submit myths about gluten to mythbusters. I started a thread on their site and I hope folks will post their gluten related myths as well.

That guy's post really irritated me. Made me (just for a moment) wish that he was a very sensitive celiac being told that his actions seem extreme. Butthead :angry:

Just to be clear, the butthead is the guy arguing on the thread about destroying gluten, not this forum :P

I registered as gfKaren. He just wants to argue. It had nothing to do with the question really.

"Why are you being so argumentative? Questioning the ladies illness? All she and her kids wanted to know was at what temperature a wheat gluten protein incinerates. We have heard that it is a big sturdy molecule that can withstand temperatures that would destroy other proteins. Debating with us whether 1 molecule can make us sick has nothing to do with the topic and request."

Yeah I noticed that response or two you got was pretty grouchy. I have never heard anyone bicker with someone about a diagnosed medical condition - let alone completely miss the point of the post. All you wanted to know is how hot does the water have to get to destroy gluten and can it hang around with normal washing & still contaminate someone.

I just posted a comment under the name gfSarah. I'm afraid after I posted I saw that I was a little long winded and preachy, but, oh well. :rolleyes:

I wish people would be more understanding and encouraging about what we have to do to stay healthy. It's not like it's easy or something we do just cause we want to.

Wow. What's his problem? Does he even know what Celiac is?? Some people need to find a hobby... Just ignore him. Don't even give him the negative attention. He doesn't deserve it. Let's all just keep writing that we have seen some serious regression. Some people.... Sheesh.

I looked around. The guy is an "expert" on everything. He gets his info from Wikipedia which is not always accurate. He must be pretty old because he said "wet hen party". I'm not sure anyone under 80 would use that term.

Anyway, ignoring him will probably frustrate him the most.

It irritated me. My son and I are not 'offically diagnosed' but we know we can't eat it.

This may be this guys hobby. Maybe he likes to stir up $h#t.

I thought about saying this but decided not to engage him anymore.

Do you have a food, like green peppers (for example) that you have figured out disagrees with you. Everytime you have an omlette with gps, you have gas and belch all day? If you have the omlette without the gps, you do fine. You have figured out GPs are bad for you and you try to avoid them.

Some people try no gluten for a couple of weeks and feel much better. They donot want to make themselves or thier child feel sick again by eating gluten to get a blood test.

An endoscopy done right away might be informative. The main problem with that procedure is that it isn't a good diagnostic tool for someone in the early stages unless they are lucky. According to your beloved Wikipedia, the average adult small intestine is 16 feet. If 20% is damaged and most GIs take 3-6 biopsies, what are the odds that the GI might miss and only biopsy healthy tissue? I don't know. Someone can do the math. (Never heard of a decent GI doc, musch less a pediatric one, that can get you in in less than 1 month, just my observation)

The problem with the "little bit won't hurt you theory" is that little bits add up. Wikipedia says we can consume 500 units(?) per day and not cause any immune rsponse. Great! That becomes the standard for gluten free. Now we have food labelled gluten-free at 400 units per serving, below the Govt standard. I eat a sandwich of gluten-free bread for lunch - each 1 slice serving is 400 units. Silly me, I use 2 pieces to make my sandwich. I am already over the limit for my day. I didn't even eat 2 gluten-free cookies (2 cookies = 1 serving, gluten 300 units) for dessert yet or figure in the accidental crumb from my kids whole wheat sandwich. This is why it is so important to eliminate every crumb you can, because they add up. This is also why a much lower standard of gluten-free is important.

That's all I'm going to say.

Ok, here is one I'd like to see MB test. Can a person be exposed to enough gluten to get sick from kissing a gluten eater who hasn't brushed their teeth? Say your significant other just drank a heavy German beer and wants to smooch you up. Can a celiac get sick from kissing them? Celiac sites I have read suggest the answer could be yes, if the beer drinker hasn't brushed and rinsed/gargled first. But is there enough residual gluten transferred from a kiss to make a celiac sick?

The US FDA is still considering their rules for labeling foods gluten free although by law they were supposed to be final years ago. Their proposed standard is less than 20 ppm to label a food gluten free. So, does a gluten kisser transfer 20 ppm or more to another person? Of course this test doesn't have to be done with real celiacs. If a method of collecting the gluten from the kissee's mouth and measuring it is used, it doesn't matter if the person is celiac or not. The amount of gluten transferred is the question.

We all know lipstick can get transferred during a kiss, why not gluten (gliaden)?

Wow, talk a about a troll fest over there on the mythbuster's thread. That one person needs a hobby! I cant take anyone seriously when they condescendingly start a reply with, now ladies...

I just registered so I can also request they tackle how easily, or not, gluten can be destroyed on cookware and utensils. I think that would make for a very interesting experiment. How happy would we all be to find out hot soapy water does the trick?

Personally Myth Busters only want things you can crash, drop, burn, make explode, float, fly and gluten doesn't fit into any of those catergories.

There are 2 Hopes of getting anything to do with Gluten featured.

It's a long shot but I have seen episodes where they had segments that didn't involve crashes or explosions. The tight jeans come to mind. I imagine they could incinerate stuff for this one. That could be fun. The thread I started has well over 1000 views and three checks for ratings. Which is way more than most threads. That plus a troll test indicate controversy around the subject. Seems there is interest.

I agree, explosions are something MB always find a way to fit in. Big kids get big explosions! They could blowup a truckload of wheat and test the remains for gluten. I wouldn't cry over some destroyed wheat. :)

    • It sounds like you're doing great. That's amazing that your anxiety has decreased like that. You're obviously doing something really good for your health. With the other things I'm sure they will get better in time. After I gave up gluten I had a bad year but overall it got better. Things like anxiety and insomnia massively improved over time with being gluten free. However, going Paleo (which you are on your way to with the no dairy too) really helped my anxiety, as did running and self-taught acupressure. In particular I found processed gluten free foods were awful for my mood. I know you have to find your own way but I really want to encourage you to see how you feel without that if you haven't already. I also can't afford therapy but when I did have it, that helped too but just being well, gives you the chance to sort your own thoughts and feelings out even without a therapist. Good luck

Reading that last response and those from forum members who seemed to be mind-bogglingly sensitive to gluten at times helps me feel like less of a freak  Perhaps worse than the symptoms themselves was my fear that I'm the only person on earth who has gone through this and that if it continues, I will end up with all of my friends and family washing their hands of me because it would look to them like I'm the only one with this and so I must be crazy. It's really good to hear that the sensitivity can go down too. I've been holding onto this idea through the tough times, reminding myself that I also had really bad hayfever for a few years, and asthma at a different time and they both got better.  It has been a whole month since I had a bad reaction to gluten. It has also been two weeks since I even had a small reaction and I'm feeling SO much better. I'm still going to take every precaution I can but this feels worlds away from how it was. At my most risk averse, I had a day on holiday where I only ate bananas and avocados because I could eat them without them having been touched by human hands, even my own! (This was straight after getting sicker and sicker and hunting down what it was that made me ill. I found the refill bottles of soap in the house where I was staying and read that they had wheat in them - not an airborne reaction I imagine but when I washed my hands to prepare food it was probably contaminating my food. Plus because I didn't speak the language, I couldn't be sure the new soap I bought was gluten free.) Now, I am still avoiding environments with lots of gluten and staying clear of all grains, with the exception of rice which I reintroduced using the food challenge method as directed by my dietician (since I understand that rice is, according to Dr Fasano, the lowest risk of gluten contamination of all the grains) and I am building my weight back up. My husband has been able to see also that the last time he cooked gluten in the house was the last time I got ill. So it is reassuring for him to see that the sacrifice he is making is making such a difference to me. I also took the advice about new cooking utensils - thanks! I have my fingers crossed for me. I want this better health to continue but right now I'm happy to know that there is a break in the clouds and to know that I can feel like me again. Good luck to everyone, sensitive or not, who gets into a bad place with managing their reactions. Hang on in there!

    • Hey guys so question. I still am going through some of the motions to finally be diagnosed. I has a really bad case of acid reflux a few days ago and now i feel soo sick. Im still eating gluten because i got a negative biaopsy test but ive been told thag i more than likely still have it because its really hard to detect. Well i drank beer last night and had a poutine today stupid i know and now i feel soooo sick. And only felt really sick after the poutine. Now my question is can your symptoms get worse all of a sudden??  I have many other symptoms thaat read celiac deisease for most of my life. But since all doctors told me you have anxiety ibs and fibro at 28 years old. I just baiscally gave up and figured this was going to be my life feeling like crap for the rest of my life. Any thoughts??? Thanks guys. Sorry for the novel lol
