Chat rooms can be a pain. I used to run one. It was fine for a while, then the kids found it. I didn't have the time to babysit it all the time.

As I see it there are two options. Make it for registered users only or have moderators around the clock.

Also free chat rooms seem to be hard to come by these days. But you never know. Maybe it could happen.

I know some of the forums come with chatroom software. Not sure if this one does. When I ran a graphics forum, there was an option to have a chatroom which we sometimes used. The only way a person could get access was by being a member of the forum so we did not have the worry of outside people coming in.

I sent a question asking about it to admin. Scott sent me back a note saying that he's looking into it. Now, let's keep our fingers crossed!

Hi Everyone,

Although I am not sure at this point whether I will be able to add in a chat feature, did you know that you can add your chat info into your personal profile, then connect with other users who do the same and are online? For example, in your profile area you can add the following type of accounts:
AIM
MSN
Website URL
ICQ
Yahoo
Jabber
Skype

and then you can connect to others vie live IM chat who have also put in their info...just a thought. Basically live IM chat requires a large amount of server resources, and most of the larger internet companies give these services away for free now, so perhaps you can test it out and let us know how it goes?

Take care,
Scott

I'd love a chat feature specific to this board. Maybe someday :)

I'm thinking even if we couldn't have an open time 24/7 to chat, perhaps a scheduled time every week?! I think it would be great to be able to chat real time!!

How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because someday in your life you will have been all of these.

Blood work positive 4/10
Endo biopsy positive 5/10
Gluten free 5/10

Don't need scott to set one up. You can download an IRC client (mIRC for you windows users) and join/create a chat room on any of several dozen IRC (Internet Relay Chat) networks. I looked around a couple years ago when I was first DX and was really surprised that there was no #celiac or #glutenfree on EFNet. I used to help OP several singles chat rooms years ago. When I was single. :)

Yes, and on top of this if you go into your personal profile for this forum you can enter your gmail, yahoo, msn, etc., instant message info and then you can connect with whomever you like via live chat, as long as they have also entered their info.

Take care,
Scott

You know, if enough people really want a live, real-time chat room that would be available 24/7 - for those who deal with insomnia too :) and want to get on IRC, I could certainly put a bot in a password protected chat room that you could only get the password from others on this forum or that choose to share the password. That can help keep the l33t IRC kiddies away. Have to change the PW every few months, but it's workable.

Facebook also has a chat feature of sorts. If you set up a group in Facebook you can IM all the users of that group, and they can reply back etc. If you use Facebook a lot, it can be anoying though. The dang chat window has a habit of popping up in the middle of the screen whenever someone posts a new message. Wether you want it to or not. It isn't supposed to do that but it is kind of buggy. Other times when it is working correctly it just makes a beep but doesn't pop up and black the screen by itself. It has problems about 50% of the time. OF course you need a FB account to use that feature.
