Has any of the older members compared their younger photos of themselves with their current photo? The reason, I bring this up is to compare your original self with your current self.

Yesterday, with the help of my digital files, I collected my older photos in time sequences. When, I was 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, etc... I have noticed how thin, I was back in those days. In some of the years, I was shocked at what I looked like back then. When, I was 22 years old, I was in the US Army on active duty. I was doing exercise each day and doing some weight lifting. I was eating right according to the US Army. I felt sick after every meal back then but, I got tired of the military clinical doctors telling me, I was ok. I was very thin, small chest, no muscle tone on my body, and very under weight all the time. 5 feet, 11 inches tall but, only weighed 125 lbs soaken wet. Now, here I am, 57 years old with a waist size of 31 - 32 and only weighing in at 124 lbs again. I am the same condition as I was back then, again. My picture at the age of 27 and 28 year old showed that my hair was almoste completely grey by the age of 28. To me the signs and symptoms have always been there but, again, no doctor had ever thought to give me a blood tests to find out what was going on over all these years. Doctors gave me, anxiety med, seizure med, heart meds, Kidney med, vitamins, but, none every though of give me a battery of blood tests. I just do not understand it ! Then, the doctors at the emergency room on my 50th birthday decided to give me a battery of blood tests. To determine, I had Celiac Disease and Hyperinsulinism Hypoglycemia. I do not know if I am going to be 60 year old or not. Too much damage has been done by this time in my life. I appriciated the diagnoses of Celiac Disease and Hyperinsulinism Hypoglycemia but, why does it take so long to find this out? I would never have passed this along to my children had I know this information at the age of 18. I would never have thought about having any children at all. I would not have wanted to pass these diseases on to innocent little children.

I was overweight until I started getting regular exercise the last year in college. Then I've varied here and there, but not more than +/- 10 pounds. (Though t took a few months to get back to that after the baby.)

Karl you can't fixate on the past and the what may have beens. You need to focus on going forward. There is no reason why if you follow the diet you can not return to a reasonably healthy condition and live to 60 or well beyond.

There are quite of few of us who were as sick or even more sick than you and have returned to health. Eat whole fresh foods, exercise at levels that you can even if it is only walking to the corner and back to start or lifting a 1 lb can 4 or 5 times. If you convince yourself that you will never recover then you won't. Let go of the past all it is doing is hurting you.

I hope you don't tell your children that 'if I knew I wouldn't have had kids' because that could hurt them deeply. Everyone has value no matter how differently abled they are.

I agree with you. We shouldn't be looking back to the past. But, in my case the past is repeating itself. There it is relavent to this situation. I also agree that the Celiac Disease part of my life has done and is doing better. However, the Hyperinsulinism Hypglycenia is not doing well. The second disease can kill me before, I reach the age of 60 years old. Notice the list on my signature ?

I do understand why you are wanting to get some context by looking back. If I could suggest that you check out something that might be helpful I would say go look up Robb Wolf's Paleo site. They are doing some incredible things with blood sugar derangement issues. From where I was nearly four years ago to now, I would try to be encouraging to you. I was ready to be done back then. I have never felt better now. I am currently taking a break from having worked in the shop all day doing prep work to weld a prototype together. Four years ago all I could do was sit in a chair staring at the ceiling most days and could barely walk. I am very strict paleo and very low, low carb with lots of good fats. Things have been healing on me that doctors told me were irreversible. You, like all of us once properly diagnosed, are in glorious days of grace. I know it's a battle, especially when you look back and think what could have been if you had only known. I understand that completely. It takes time to heal body, mind and spirit. Be patiently impatient in these new found days of grace.

I have almost forgot for, the last 5 years, I have not been able to tolerate fats. When ever, I try to boil chicken meat, breast, thighs, or drump sticks. The fat boil out of the meat but, I get really nausea if, I eat the meat. I found that whether the meat is pork, chicken, or beef. It oils or fats come out of it or, it is greasey, these fats and oils make me really sick.

Also, if any spices are used in preparing my food other than Iodine Salt, I also get really sick within minutes. My stomach becomes upset and burns. If I eat only bland foods, I have absolutely no problems at all. If I stay away from all oils and fats I am just fine. The only oil, my body wants or tolerates is Olive Oil only !

Any ideals what causes this?

Have you had your gall bladder function checked out?

I have a working theory on the whole gut flora damage thing going on in my head but am no researcher. I happen to think that disruption of a healthy gut flora may be a cause of many problems ultimately. Don't know where this fits for you. I know I wasn't digesting fats early on and had a problem with what now seems to be SIBO and yeast overgrowth. I had years of antibiotic overuse way back when and although I was able to live with it while not feeling great, it was a dose of antibiotics that really put me in a complete health tailspin back in 2004. I keep mentioning this to whoever I respond to but Elaine Gottschall's book "Breaking the vicious cycle" is a real eye opener and has helpful explanations of why you need to limit carbs while healing. I did some extraordinary things with some raw foods in order to get my gut flora healthier. It is hard to explain exactly what I did but all I know is that I have never felt this good and I am fifty. This was after a lifetime of always being the sick skinny little kid. Keep digging for the answers.

I used to have a yeast like infection on the entire length of my tongue. I do not know how it got there since, I did not do anything nasty with it. I took some anti-biotics that the doctor gave me. It went away but, the antibiotics did make me so sick, I had to go to the emergecy room after 4 days of taking them. Today, 5/27/2011 I went into a Hypoglycemic state. My glucose levels dropped all the way down to 63 mg/dl. I was having all sorts of problems at that point. Celiac Disease was the furtherest from my mind at that moment.

However, I can and do tolerate Extra Virgin Olive Oil just fine. I put it on top of my food with every meal. 1 Table spoon full. So, it is not all oils that bother me. At lease, I can eat olive oil without problems.

Sorry you had a hypo incident today although 63 is not dangerously low it may have been low enough to make you feel a bit off. Have you spoken with a dietian to help get a handle on the ups and lows? You should be able to get a referral from your doctor. I do know that with hypoglycemia you need to eat both carbs and protein frequently to keep things in balance. If you use insulin or other diabetic meds do ask for guidance as when and how to eat needs to be well regulated.

Yeast infections can be secondary to antibiotic use and are not limited to females. Much more common that I think most realize. Of course, this plays right into my theory of antibiotic overuse and its impact on the function of the gut flora. It's a potential origin for the breakdown of the function that may lead to many other complications. Hope you get to feeling better.

I sure hope we live past 60. I am 60 now, diagnosed at 59 and health is returning slowly but steadily. I will admit that I was so darn sick that I was scared I wouldn't make it to 60 so I stayed up till 12:01 on my b'day just to be sure! :rolleyes: I now feel so good that I intend to pack on quite a few more years doing what I love - hiking, camping & kayaking! Life is good. :)

I'n 53, just newly diagnosed, with two terrific daughters. Being diagnosed earlier would not have affected my plan to have children. It would just have made me fight to have them tested when they were younger. One of my daughters was diagnosed just over two years ago following an admission into the intesive care ward as she was so bad. Two and a half years of strict gluten free (not only food but toiletries, make up etc) and she is a healthy vibrant young woman trying to start her own family. My other daughter has just been tested and we're waiting on results.

    • Thanks for posting.  I know it is difficult to talk about these sorts of things even on a webforum.  It is good thing for people to be aware though about celiac disease and that it can cause mental problems.  Gluten can cause brain damage and it can cause anxiety. If the brain does heal it may take a long time. I know that gluten can cause anxiety and obsessive thoughts.  My experience has been similar to your experience. When I first quit eating gluten I had a similar constant loop and strong negative feelings. There are lots of people on this forum who get anxiety when they eat gluten. Some people also experience gluten withdrawl where they experience anxiety after giving up gluten. It can take a long time for the body to heal and for obsessive thoughts to go away.
       It is normal for people to socialize with each other and to be comfortable about it. You said you have problems still socializing and being around people. It might be a depressing thought but it sounds to me like you still have problems with anxiety.  I would recommend considering what options you have available to treat the anxiety. When I quit eating Gluten I still had some symptoms, even though I felt much better. I have been slowly recovering over a period of about three years. I had obsessive thoughts even after I quit eating gluten.  Now I very rarely if at all think about those things. My experience is that my mind would latch on to certain things that caused me anxiety and focus on those things. Sometimes my focus would shift and I would latch onto other things. My ability to socialize has also improved greatly with time. I have made some dietary changes which I believe have helped greatly. It sounds to me like you have obsessive thoughts about things and maybe some brain damage. My experience has been that my obsessive thoughts about different things went away with time. I feel my obsessive thoughts were caused by gluten and not by what people did around me or any events. As my brain healed I became more self aware and things became less stressful.  I can't give medical advice on this forum but I can talk about my current diet and my experience with celiac disease. My experience with gluten is different from a lot of other people so it is a good idea to ask other people and to talk to a doctor.  I avoid oats and avoid almost all processed foods. I buy certified gluten free food. I eat healthy and I exercise every day. I take st John's Wort as I have read studies that say it may be as effective as some other anti-depressants for treating certain types of anxiety. It is available over the counter. I started with a small dosage and then stepped it up over time. Some people do not process the synthetic form of vitamin b (from normal pills)  very well, and do better on an activated form of vitamin b. I take:
      1 activated vitamin b12 daily
      1 activated vitamin b6 every once in a while. 1 regular vitamin b multivitamin
      1 magnesium pill every day.
      St Johns Wort daily.
      1 zinc vitamin daily
      I drink lots of Chamomile tea and decaf coffee. I avoid most caffeine. 
      I think each of these helps lower my anxiety level.  I eat fruit with every meal. Canned fruit from walmart is cheap and good for you. I eat salad and and vegetables and avoid dairy.  I eat frozen fish often as it has healthy proteins. Eating healthy is very important. I eat potatoes and rice. http://www.livestrong.com/article/454179-what-is-methyl-b12/ I avoid eating soy sauce, soy, cheese, aged meats and fermented foods (I do drink certain types of alcohol in moderate amounts.) These foods contain lots of Tyramine. I might (or might not) have "monoaine oxidase deficiency" and if so high Tyramine foods should be avoided.  I thought I might have problems with elevated ammonia in my blood, but I am not convinced of that anymore. I limited my consumption of meat for a while as well as dairy but I am not sure if i helped.  I have heard that Celiac disease can effect other organs besides the brain and those organs can have an effect on the brain.  My current diet is working so I am going to stick with it for now. I try not to worry about things that are outside of my control. Be patient as it took me a long time to recover.  Let me know if you have any questions.
