Rash

Hello,

I've had some occasions of a bad rash on my legs and stomach while experiencing severe diarrhea. Does this sound like symptoms of DH? I'm not sure if I was exposed to gluten when these occuried.

I was tested for a peanut allergy (which was negative) since it was at a time I was snacking on nuts heavily.

The allergist actually said he knew of no rash symptoms related to celiac disease.

The allergist must not know about celiac disease. It could be DH. Is it itchy?

Are you on the gluten-free diet? If not, then the rash could come at anytime.

If the rash it kinda itchy and red then it is most likely dh. I think that if you are having diarrhea and a dh like rash then you should be tesed for celiac disease. You can also get the rashes biopsied to see if it is dh.

Although DH can appear anywhere, the stomach and legs would not be common sites, particularly the stomach. I can't remember ever having it on my stomach in 20 years. My DH looked like blisters filled with clear fluid and was EXTREMELY itchy. I never really thought of it as a rash.

I was not diagnosed with DH but I do think I have it because I get itchy bumps when I am exposed to gluten. I usually get them on my knees/thighs/elbows/and stomach. So it can happen even though it may be rare to see bumps in those places.

I have developed little rashy spots on my skin during my last 2 gluten accidents. The first time they appeared on my elbow, leg, upper arm, and neck. The second time I only had 2 on my left leg. I also have not been diagnosed with dh, but I believe that this could be dh or a skin reaction to wheat (since I also have a wheat allergy).

Thanks - for all the replys.

Answers to some of the questions:

Yes - I was on the gluten free diet (about 95% of the time) and I have already been diagnosed with celiac disease.

My allergist knew I was diagnosed with celiac disease but he obviously did not know about DH. Maybe I need to find a new allergist? He kept going back to the peanut allergy even though all my tests were negative.

I haven't had an outbreak recently and yes the rash was itchy. I also have been more diligent about my gluten-free diet lately. Since my GI doctor read me the riot act.

I guess my main question is - do you have to be exposed to gluten for the effects of DH to arise or can they just happend at anytime?

Thanks again,

Kevin

There is no time limit on when it will come. Some people may see the DH immediately after they are exposed to gluten and others may not. I personally get the symptoms immediately but not usually the DH. That usually comes a few days after I have accidentally ingested it.

Enlarged lymph nodes in neck and groin with celiac are not uncommon. They can take time to reduce even after going gluten-free. Monitoring is key.

Hi Scott, yes I have had symptoms for years and this is the second GI I have seen and he could not believe I have never been tested. He called later today and I am scheduled for an endoscopy. Is there a way to tell how severe my potential celiac is from the results above? What are the chances I will have the biopsy and come back negative and we have to keep searching for a cause?

I agree christina, there is definitely many contributing factors! I have the pain today, my pelvis, hips and thighs ache! No idea why. But i have been sitting at work for 3 days so im thinking its my back. This disease is very mysterious (and frustrating) but not always to blame for every pain.

"her stool study showed she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that." The wording of this part of the sentence does not make any sense at all. I don't mean to insult you, but is English your first language? This part of the sentence sounds like it was generated by translation software.

What kind of stool test was done? Can you be more specific?
