Help Me Like Lara Bars!

Lara bars seem to be beloved by many. I tried one a few months ago and did not care for it (apple, I think). At the grocery store this morning they were on sale for $1.49 each (and several kinds available) so I bought more (we have an upcoming trip to Europe so want to stock up). I tried the cherry flavour and literally had a hard time finishing it! That is extremely unusual for me as I love food utterly. So, what flavours are your favourites? Which shall I try? I would like to like them because they are convenient. As I'm a scratch cook I always believe homemade is better and of course I am aware that we all have different tastes but these somehow evade me. I do not loathe them - but am disappointed. :( I would rather "spend" my fat and calories elsewhere! :D Anyone else disillusioned? :P

My son didn't like Lara bars at all, and I thought they were "OK" at best.

He lives on ZonePerfect bars. They are the best I have found as far as high protein balanced with relatively low carbs and fat. Although our favorite flavors are different, we both like several varieties.

I don't like the cake-like LaraBars. For me it's all the chocolate kinds, cashew cookie and pecan pie, that's all. Forget the apple pie, cherry pie....etc. - waste of money :P

My youngest likes the Cashew Cookie the best and my oldest likes the Coconut Cream Pie one the best, of course she is on a major coconut kick right now though.

I loved the coconut ones but can't find them around here anymore. The others are so-so . . . something to keep in my bag for emergencies.

I much prefer Kind bars. They cost a little more but are so much better.

I do enjoy LaraBars, especially the Key Lime Pie and Coconut varieties. I have recently found Bora-Bora Bars, though, and am totally in love! :D

My daughter and I do not like any of them. We don't see the appeal.

But when I was on a raw vegan diet, I tried some brownies that were really good. The recipe I am posting is just the first one I found. It isn't exactly what I used. The one I used had no honey or agave nectar and no coconut but other than that I believe it is the same. So you might try that. But keep in mind it won't be raw unless you use truly raw products. Not an issue though if you don't follow that kind of diet.

I'm one of those that like Lara Bars. For me, I love dates, raisins, craisin and other dried fruit along with plain nuts. I can eat any of those things just alone as a snack and that's pretty much all there is to Lara Bars. I think some people try them expecting them to taste just like their names--like the apple pie one does not taste anything like apple pie! It just has some seasonings in common with apple pie. So if you have that expectation and try them then, yeah, you probably won't like them. The "lemon bar" does not compare to a lemon bar at all but it does have a nice lemony flavor, etc, etc. My favorite is either the cashew cookie or peanut butter cookie--just don't expect them to be as sweet as an actual cookie since they don't add any sugar to them. The Key Lime Pie is pretty good too. If you don't like them however it's really no big deal. I've been reading all the scrumptious, rich and delicate desserts that you make since you came on this board. If I ate dessert on regualr basis I probably would never want a Lara Bar either. They cetainly don't compare to eating actual key lime pie or actual peanut butter cookies. :P

You know, I think that's it! I expected them to taste as advertised! I was expecting something completely different. Not that they're bad - they're not - but just not what I thought they would be. I, too, love dried fruits and nuts but to be honest prefer other dessert-y sorts of things. I'm a texture person and love to incorporate crunchy, smooth, crispy, chewy all into one thing if I can. I will still take them with me on our trip because they are convenient and certainly not available where we're going. :)

I think you've got it. Just think of them as a snack, NOT a dessert and you will probably like them more. ;)

Great advice. Sometimes my expectations are a wee bit high...

I loved Larabars before General Mills bought them out. My faves were the nut and chocolate ones. Now...they're just not as good anymore<sad sigh>

So far KIND bars are still made by their original maker. They are tasty, but they stick to my teeth like crazy and that's annoying. I have to pick, brush and floss after eating one lest I go around with a nut skin for piece of dried fruit stuck to my front tooth...

I only like the chocolate Lara bars.

Honestly I carry Isa Genix bars everywhere with me. The forum won't let me type it as one word because it thinks I'm trying to sell them to you. Yes, it's a network marketing company but the protein shakes and bars are my lifeline when I travel.

I forgot to each most of a day and was nowhere near home, I always carry a Lara Bar in my purse for such an ememgency and boy all of a sudden it tasted so much better and the low bood sugar and dizzyness that brings went away. Just saying that when you are hungry and have low blood sugar you will be so glad that you have one, even though it was almost flat from carrying it around so long, when I got home threw another one in my purse.

Try Kind bars. I love them and to me are much better than Lara Bars.

My husband found Kind bars for today! He bought me one of each variety available. After trying just one I wholeheartedly agree that Kind bars are vastly superior to Lara bars (for my personal taste). I am very impressed! :D They will be perfect to travel with.

Oh, I have to be really hungry to eat a Kind bar. They're too sticky for me, and weirdly between chewy and crunchy. I like Mrs. May's better for that sort of nut bar. Better flavor and texture.

But, I'm a larabar fan. I quite like the lemon and cherry ones, as well as all the chocolate ones with chips. I don't really like the ones with heavy spicing (apple pie, cashew cookie, etc.) Anyway, hope the trip went (is going?) well.

I can only stomach the chocolate chip or coconut date. The others are terrible.

I LOVE Kind bars. I could live on almond coconut.

The trip is 3 weeks away but I just re-injured my back yesterday and literally cannot walk. My husband had to take the day off work to help me walk to the bathroom, etc. The pain is horrendous so I am lying here with my laptop trying to distract myself. :( Hopefully our trip is a go! It would be a pity to miss out on Europe (it has happened already twice due to back stuff).

I love the texture of the Kind bars but then I love chewy and crunchy a lot! :D

So far these Kind bars are amongst the very, very few processed gluten-free things I have fallen in love with. I am a cook-and-bake-from-scratch advocate but sometimes you just need a quick snack (like today!). SO glad I read about them. :)

I did wonder this, but can't find very much about it. I can just avoid gluten free bread that looks like it has powder on the top, but if it does that to my lips I am just worried if it's upsetting my tummy too.
    • plumbago
Could it be something (some additive or other) they added to the rice flour to make it easier to work with or cook?
    • gurgi
My lips actually have an allergic reaction.  Apparently it's rice flour ontop of the bread, but I don't have a problem with rice. I can't have gluten
    • plumbago
@gurgi I would look at the ingredients and go through that list to see if an allergic reaction is possible. Regarding m and s soft rolls: I did a search on the ingredients of the gluten free version. It has added B vitamins (b2, b5, and b6). I also see that niacin (b3) was added. Sometimes when people take b3 or, really, too much of it, they get a flush. Again, go through the ingredients, try to figure out what constitutes that powder on the tops of the breads, and see if it could be causing a reaction.

@lydialoo, Tell me about your high dose Thiamine routine. What kind of Thiamine are you taking?  How much (mg) are you taking?  When do you take it? Are you taking a B Complex?   Are you taking Magnesium?
