Children's Book?

My 3 1/2 year old daughter was just diagnosed as celiac. Does anyone have any children's books to recommend? We were given one by Jax Peters Lowell called No More Cupcakes and Tummy Aches. Unfortunately, it's not age appropriate. It's also depressing and the pictures are creepy.

Thanks!

I made my son a book on my computer. It was really cute and had pictures of us and his school and his teachers and his friends and the park and us at restaurants and the dr of course. I think you should do it in your spare time yourself. It's very personal that way. I drew cartoonish pictures and wrote the story of his dx through his current daily activities....how celiac disease is worked into the daily lives of our family. He loves it. I laminated it. Have fun!

Here is a link to an activity book for kids 4-11 about celiac disease. I have not used it myself, so I can't give any specifics about it. It may not be age appropriate for your 3 year old.

I know there are some other books out there, but I can't think where I saw references to them. I'll let you know if I find something else.

There is a children's book called "Eating Gluten Free With Emily" by Bonnie J. Kruszka. I personally really think this book is great! I read it to my 2nd grade class while doing my student teaching. They liked it, and got it!! However when I read the word "diarrhea" everyone cracked up! ha :P I think it's well worth the money!! Great book.

You can find it through gluten free pantry. Here is the info that they have on the book:

EATING GLUTEN FREE WITH EMILY is a story for children with celiac disease written by Bonnie J. Kruszka and illustrated by Richard S. Cihlar. 30 pages, paperback, full-color illustrations. *A percentage of sales will be donated to celiac disease research. ""This is one of the best products I have for children with celiac disease. Really well done!"" -Dr. Alessio Fasano, M.D., Center for Celiac Research, University of Maryland ""A much needed and timely piece of work."" -Dr. Ramasamy Manikam, M.D., Center for Celiac Research, University of Maryland ""My children love this book! They enjoy the story, the clever illustrations, and the main character, Emily, who uses words and stories to which they can relate."" -Trisha B. Lyons, R.D., L.D., Clinical Dietitian, MetroHealth Medical Center, Cleveland This is the story of Emily, a happy, active five-year-old, who suddenly becomes ill. Emily describes the process through which she is diagnosed with celiac disease, and chronicles real-life situations that all children with dietary restrictions inevitably face. She then recounts the lifestyle changes necessary to manage her disease in terms that young people can understand. About the author: Bonnie Kruszka is a stay-at-home mom and a former pharmaceutical product representative. She is a graduate of Michigan State University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry and pre-medicine. Bonnie is currently pursuing a doctorate degree in nursing. She hopes to practice as a nurse practitioner in the field of family medicine. She lives in the Cleveland, Ohio area with her husband and son. About the illustrator: Richard S. Cihlar, has received several local and national art awards. He is a graduate of Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio, where he earned a bachelor of studio art degree. Rich lives in Avon, Ohio where he aspires to own and operate his own art gallery.

We have the book "Eating Gluten Free with Emily" and I agree it is a great book! My 2 year old Celiac is a little young for it, but my 4 year old, non-Celiac loved it. I am however going to take the one suggestion to make my own book! What a great idea! You can't get any more personal than that!

Yes, that's a good book. I think, though, that that type of book is something that's intended to alleviate your child's concerns by showing that this person in the book is doing this diet and is healthy, happy, fine, etc.

An adult's celiac book would be way too complicated for a five-year-old to understand--and what five-year-old needs to know the complex structure of the gluten or what research is going on or which means of serologic testing is most effective? At the same time a child's would not explain things...enough. So I think there is no substitution for your own knowledge and telling your child what pertains to his or her situation.

"Eating Gluten-free with Emily" is better for younger kids (2-5). "No More Tummy Aches and Cupcakes" is better for school age kids. Tania Greenville, Pa

I wanted to post an update: I ordered Eating Gluten-Free With Emily for my daughter, and it came in the mail today. I had told her it was coming, so she was primed. She loves it! She's already had it read to her three times and has even memorized some of it. It's so much more age-appropriate than No More Cupcakes or Tummy Aches, the pictures are cheerful and the message is good. Thanks for the recommendation. Two thumbs up!

Hello @brian1 I'm a UK based Moderator here on the forum.  If you are British, you may find that in your region you might be able to get certain gluten-free food (usually staples like bread) on prescription.  I recommend you ring Coeliac UK for the most up-to-date advice on this. https://www.coeliac.org.uk/home/ There is some advice here for UK coeliacs which might also be of use, on how to best navigate the gluten-free diet on a budget. https://www.coeliac.org.uk/information-and-support/living-gluten-free/the-gluten-free-diet/gluten-free-diet-on-a-budget/ I am afraid I don't know anything about the benefits you mention but maybe the charity can help? Legumes can be a source of wheat contamination, but I assume that you use versions labelled "gluten-free."

You may want to look into Benfotiamine, which is the fat soluble version of B1.

Be sure all testing is completed before going gluten-free, that is, unless you are certain that gluten is the culprit and have decided not to eat it again. This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):
