Was I Glutened Or Am I Just Still Recovering?

ok, so basically, I have posted a couple of times in the past year about the difficulty I was having and the many doctors I have gone to and all the testing done on me. It turns out, I now have 2 doctors, ones says I do, one says I dont. The only way to prove it is to go gluten-free for a while and get yet another endoscopy to see if the damage is gone.

I have now been gluten (and soy) free for about 7 weeks. I have been feeling mostly fine- as opposed to literally feeling ill every night, and other than one test time when I ate gluten at 2 weeks in and felt very nauseas for a few hours, I have been extremely strict.

A week ago however, on Monday afternoon I was eating some gluten-free pretzels as a snack and started to feel the usual nausea and diarrhea coming on- this continued every time I ate until Thursday night. so 4 days of misery.

I could NOT figure out what happened! All I had eaten that day was brown rice with some salsa. Then I remembered that I went to my MIL house on Sunday afternoon to have my daughter "help" her bake bread. I did not eat anything there, but did have a cup of coffee in the room that the baking was going on. We came after the bread was rising so there shouldnt be flour in the air, but I did touch the dough to help my daughter. I washed my own and her hands thoroughly after. Could I have exposed myself at that point and yet only react 24 hours later? Does this make sense to anyone? I thought I would have reacted immediately- I had dinner sunday night with no problem.

Is this a gluten reaction or was I reacting to the fiber and fat in the pretzels because I havent healed completely yet? any thoughts?

/a 24-hr delayed reaction is not at all unusual. And if bread was being made there would have still been airborne particles of flour floating around the room, landing on your coffee cup. It is surprising how long they can remain suspended. I suspect that was the source of your problems and not the pretzels.

I agree, I feel light headed even walking into a bakery sometimes. I can't order a coffee from a donut place because the flour is everywhere and I will react to the coffee. I usually react within an hour to any Gluten but I know people that react after 24 or 48 hours. Check the salsa for cross contamination, did anyone use it with their flour torilla before you put some on your rice? Hope it gets settled soon!

My reaction time is 48 hours so I always go back two days to see what I ate. Sometimes I find the culprit...sometimes I don't.

Hi Scott, yes I have had symptoms for years and this is the second GI I have seen and he could not believe I have never been tested. He called later today and I am scheduled for an endoscopy. Is there a way to tell how severe my potential celiac is from the results above? What are the chances I will have the biopsy and come back negative and we have to keep searching for a cause?

I agree christina, there is definitely many contributing factors! I have the pain today, my pelvis, hips and thighs ache! No idea why. But i have been sitting at work for 3 days so im thinking its my back. This disease is very mysterious (and frustrating) but not always to blame for every pain.

"her stool study showed she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that." The wording of this part of the sentence does not make any sense at all. I don't mean to insult you, but is English your first language? This part of the sentence sounds like it was generated by translation software.

What kind of stool test was done? Can you be more specific?

Perhaps I should also have said that in addition to showing a very high response to gluten, her stool study showed that she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that.
