Enlarged Spleen.....

Hi Guys!

My sister just called. She is going through numerous tests. She goes this Thursday to a GI specialist and will be getting the blookwork done for celiac disease. So far the tests she has had shows she has a hiatus hernia and an enlarged spleen. I know hiatus hernia could be common in celiacs but what could cause an enlarged spleen?

Thanks!

Karen

Well everything can be affected by celiac so yes the spleen can be affected. Mono which was my celiac trigger also caused my spleen to become enlarged for a while.

So I'm wondering, if I do in fact have it (just not diagnosed officially) can a nervous breakdown or alcohol consumption over the years trigger it?

I guess I pretty much "trashed my body" in the past and now I'm paying for it. :(

Danceswithwolves--

I would say either one of those could be a trigger for Celiac. For some its an illness, a surgery, a pregnancy...there are many...

Yep, as Jen said, there are many triggers and that could have been yours. Your body just said "Enough" and snapped.

It can be caused by anemia or inflammation elsewhere in the body. Did she have a biopsy and if so, was it recently? I could provide more information based on this.

I will know a lot more after today, she goes to see my gastro today. I know he is doing the bloodwork today but I don't know whether he will automatically schedule an endo or wait until bloodwork.....

Thanks!

Mine is definitely triggered by inflammation and stress! I do also have arthritis in my spine, but the pain is more in my pelvic area. Im sure i have other food intolerances or other autoimmune isues but the more I focus on it and see doctor after doctor, it just gets worse.  Best thing is get of Gluten! (I also avoid lactose). Try to limit stress and anything that causes inflammation in your body.

Good morning,   I got an email about replies to this post. Some of my doctors had blamed a slipped disc for the pain I had and that contributes, but after meeting with a gastroenterologist AGAIN and trying some lifestyle modifications, I found out I have IBS and can't tolerate corn or excessive fructose to any degree. Cutting out corn AFTER having cut out all gluten containing products was a real pain but I feel much better now!

So, I contacted Scott Adams, the author of that article and also the creator/admin of this website, and pointed out to him the need to clarify the information in the paragraph in question. He has now updated the paragraph and it is clear that the DGP-IGA does serve the purpose of circumventing the false negatives that IGA deficiencies can generate in the tTG-IGA antibody test.

Has anyone experimenced enlarged lymph nodes with celiac? Both in the neck and groin area. Imaging of both areas have said that lymph nodes are reactive in nature. However, they have been present for months and just wondering how long this may take to go down. Been gluten-free for about two months. Blood counts are normal.
