Seafood - Iodine & Dh

Seafood is my absolute favourite food on the planet. I've been diligently avoiding it for months. Tonight for a special celebration Mum had a family/friends to have oysters and prawns. It is a summer tradition for us to eat lots of seafood.

Anyway.. I had a reaction within minutes.

I wonder what other peoples experience with the iodine/seafood has been?

Another thing.. and this seems very crazy... I had a strange sense that eating seafood (iodine OVERLOAD) tonight then having a massive itch fest was actually a flushing of the gluten. I know this could be controversial so please stay calm! Just want to put it out there. Wonder what other peoples experience/sensation with iodine has been?

BTW unlike when I've overdone processed foods (gluten-free) or unintentional glutening this "episode" of itching has been somewhat temporary. Oysters/Prawns about 2-3 hours ago and although initial reaction was immediate and intense, I am actually feeling like it is temporary - no serious new outbreaks etc.

I so wish someone would do a decent and thorough research of this condition!!!!!!!!!!

I had sushi last week for the first time since going low iodine (ive eaten seafood but not that large of quantity). Woke up with a red warning spot. Not a major outbreak but a little spot.

It was the clearest indicator yet that it's iodine (and not dairy, etc). The only food I'm not eating now is gluten....

I know what you mean about the temporary itching....it would freak me out. I'd check every 5 minutes to see if I had a bump.

Seafood caused me no problems whatsoever, and I had DH for more than 20 years. Oysters are lower in iodine than many other things, including milk, and prawns are actually very low (shrimp is much higher).

Might be something psychological going on. You expected itching and you got it.

Might be something psychological going on. You expected itching and you got it.

Nope, it's not psychological. The nervousness it causes is, though. Kind of like playing chicken with a train...

My itching was strong at the times of day my DH would normally weep (evenin, morning). It slowly subsided.... Probably was the scabs itching, too. But it did itch after the scabs healed - felt like welts were imminent but never popped up.

I just woke up with a new spot in my other arm....I think too much cumulative iodone. Only other possibility is mozzerella that lists "vinegar" but doesnt specify distilled. Oops.

I went a little egg and milk crazy over Thanksgiving. Back to hot tea and egg whites for a week....thrilling.

Some people are sensitive to iodone, others aren't.

In both the US and Canada, when the single word "vinegar" appears in an ingredients list, it refers to distilled white vinegar.

Diandliam: I've never been able to detect a corelation between iodine intake (or seafood consumption) and DH symptoms. Some people seem to be more sensitive.

Yes we need more research. Perhaps we should be pressuring our national coeliac associations to lobby on our behalf for controlled studies.

Glad you are feeling relief. Me too. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

      Thank you and I am aware that I should be eating a "normal" diet until tested it's kind of been trial and error for my diet or more like just ERROR! I about 1-3 bites a meal I'm to a point that 99 percent of the time I'm having trouble swallowing just about everything occasionally I find either something or a very small window of time that allows me to get very little of something! I am basically getting zero nutrition what so ever because I take one bite of the meal that I usually just slaved over just to end up tossing it when it's all said and done...did anyone else ever experience anything like this?  I am more then open to suggestions! It is taking a very extreme toll on me and my body forsure

      No! Do not start the gluten free diet until you know whether or not you will be having an endoscopy/biopsy to verify the blood antibody test results. Starting gluten free eating ahead of either form of diagnostic testing can invalidate the results. You don't want to allow the villous lining of the small bowel to experience healing ahead of testing by removing gluten.
