The Pau d'arco tea is used to detox the body and is considered a more gentle, natural anti-yeast detoxifying agent than say, prescription anti-fungals. Opinions vary as to whether or not it works.

I used it for a few weeks a few years ago upon the suggestion of an ND and an integrative MD. I was so sick and in burning pain from my mouth down---so all it did was make me feel worse. BUT that was MY experience.

It may stir up some yucky feelings while you use it. Before I was DXed, they had me trying every darn herbal remedy there is, but quite frankly, in a ravaged gut, this can sometimes be counterproductive--as it was for me.

Other people on here report great success with this approach to healing their leaky guts and I wish it had worked for me too.

In the end, despite trying thousands of dollars' worth of remedies and supplements and getting NO relief, once I removed gluten from my diet, the gut calmed down. However, it took me many months as I was an UnDXed celiac for MANY years.

All you can do is try it and see.

Here is a link that explains what the tea is and what it is used for.

May I ask you something--you seem to be having a really bad time with your gut, hon--have you had all the testing done and this is what they determined? candida? leaky gut? An MD or a ND? Just curious and I feel really bad for you that you are not getting relief.

I was in your shoes for 3 years. It's awful, I know. ((hugs))

If someone already suggested this to you, forgive me for repeating it.

Have you tried probiotics??? they worked wonders in straightening out my gut and replenishing the good bacteria that leaky guts need.

Just a suggestion.

You are on Nystatin, then. Oral lozenge or powder? Ok, Yes, I am familiar with this drug. My good friend with yeast outbreaks takes this.

Hon, do you see a gastro doctor??

You need to drink a LOT of water with a probiotic. I would suggest you keep taking it, but you can ask your doctor first if you are not sure. But they should NOT hurt you; they are beneficial.

How long have you had this burning GI tract? How long has he been treating you?

I am not being nosy, honest, I am trying to help you, but I do not know how long you've been treating this leaky gut.

You poor babe. This is a bit baffling, but maybe we can at least get the D under control. Do you still have that?

If you are constantly having D, you are surely dehydrated. Drink a LOT of water.

How did this allergist determine it was a YEAST infection? Unless you have a raging one you can SEE?

Honestly, the best thing for the diarrhea is probiotics.

Works for everyone I know. Worked for me.

Can you try them again? Keep taking them every day.

Try Culturelle--just get the dairy free ones.

So, for 8 months, you have been treating all this as if they are allergies and a leaky gut, right?

What else are you taking right now?

Pro-biotics are a good idea. I'd also avoid sugar in any form, in case it is candida, and starch also. Oats are a no no for me and 10 to 15% of celiacs. Are you taking anything that blocks or decreases stomach acid? That can be bad as it lets all comers into your system. If you can try some Betaine HCL every few days to see if it helps.

Mastic gum is something I have just started trying but it seems to help my stomach pain. Thanks to advice from Burdee. It helps with h.pylori and is antibacterial.

Just some ideas of things to try. I hope you get better soon!

Oh sweetie...I feel so bad for you! I'm still having trouble too, and trying to sort it all out. If they are suspecting a yeast overgrowth any grains, starchy foods, or sugars would feed it, so should be avoided. Your oatmeal may have CC and the Rice Chex have soy I think? I had to quit eating them. If you were reacting badly to soy..eating anything with even a small bit will keep you inflamed and miserable...for days. Check any supplements you may be taking for it. Look for tocopherol in your vitamins too. It can be made from wheat or soy.

Culturelle probiotics are your friend. You can take them a couple of times a day.

This is an awful way to be feeling at holiday time. Next year will be *our year* right?

Some brands of chicken or beef broth are gluten-free and soy free. Get some and warm it in the microwave and sip on it as often as you like. It's healing to your body.

Also I thought I'd mention..sometimes as you are being treated for yeast they emit a toxin as they die off. That alone can have you feeling poorly.

Drink lots of water..it helps flush everything through.

thanks i was not sure about the probiotics seeing as there is not much food in there and when to take them both doc's say they are not sure if they work you can try them and see what happens

so the probiotic is wellquest kind acidophilus 6billion active cells naturally sourced no art colors flavours prervatives no wheat

when should i take this

for the multi vit its called multifactors women's vit mineral vegarian cap

when would be a good time to take this

there is none of this tocopherol in the vit's there are a huge list of stuff including digestive enzymes

i did make some chicken the other day and put the liquid in a canning jar it sealed and i put it in the fridge after my last post i went and got some and heated it up and i think it did sooth my guts down some

and i just took a probiotic i tryed some yogurt and it burned and hurt

im going to go sip on some chicken broth and go lay down for a while

big hugs to you all thank you so much for helping me god bless you all

The probiotics are to populate your intestines with *good* bacteria..the kind that helps digestion. You can take it any time during the day..with or without food.

It's important for the good bacteria to repopulate the area when the yeast is dying off, rather than have *bad* bacteria take over the turf.

I think that most multi-vitamins should be taken with some food? Some of the B vitamins can upset your tummy if taken without food.

Sipping on broth can be helpful to sooth your system and promote healing. Nibbling on things rather than loading up on a heavy meal is good too.

Best wishes to you.

(((hugs)))

You may want to lay off the yogurt for a while, hon. Dairy is dairy. Try no milk at all, even the "lactose-free" stuff because it may be the casein in the dairy (which is the protein) that is bothering you.

I'd be interested in knowing how an allergist diagnosed a lactose "allergy"--as I have never heard of that.

Can you use So Delicious Coconut milk? It gives me no grief whatsoever. There is no soy in it.

Please try to take the probiotic daily, okay? Acidophillus is only ONE type of probiotic. You need a MULTI-STRAIN probiotic. Please, just try the CULTURELLE Dairy and gluten- free probiotic for one month. Get them at any drug store.

MY GI DOC highly recommends them and they are backed by peer-reviewed research.

Any doctor who is helping you heal a leaky gut SHOULD know about the benefits of probiotics!!!

I really, honestly think it will help crowd out the bad bacteria and put a stop to that burning, churning. My GI tract burned horribly from my mouth, down my throat to my intestines to my rectum. It was agony for 2 YEARS! I replenished my gut with probiotics after my DX for several months and now, I am FINE!!

I wonder about taking the Nystatin. Those anti-fungals do a number on the gut. Unless you absolutely need it because you have a VISIBLE raging yeast infection??--I do not know why this doctor tells you to stay on it when you are obviously having severe gut reactions while taking them?? (that is one of the side effects)

This is my humble opinion, but sweetie, if you have been treated since April for "just a leaky gut", you would be feeling better by now. This is why I suggest them to you.

Most of us have LOW stomach acid, not too much, so taking ZANTAC could be making things worse. They sure did for me!!

I am not sure these docs know what's best for you. IMHO

No dairy for awhile and see if that helps.

Take the probiotics.

Lots of water and beef or chicken broth.

Eat small portions of any food you can tolerate throughout the day.

Also, Digestive enzymes are VERY beneficial. Check to see they are Gluten and dairy free. Take them BEFORE you eat.

Keep me posted. IH

Wait a minute! You said you had a colonoscopy. Did you have an endoscopy? That's the one that starts in the mouth and goes done thru the stomach & into the intestines? The colonoscopy come up thru the back end.

Have they looked for an ulcer? I ask because my mom has been having burning and pain when she swallowed. She couldn't tell if it was stomach or throat. They did an endoscopy, turns out she has an ulcer all the way around her esophagus just above the stomach. They are giving her something that coats and numbs before she eats. This helps a little.

Excellent point, Karen!! I am so focused on trying to get this poor girl out of the burning pain, I failed to see that part. However, she did have the upper GI series with the barium drink which would have shown any abnormalities of the tract. But does it pick up ulcers?

She said the doctor said her problem was "not severe enough" to warrant a GI doctor...?? This is crazy how much she suffers.

The So Delicious Coconut milk is in the dairy section in a red carton and it is not much more expensive than cow's milk. If you just use it on your gluten-free cereal, it lasts a week.

There is a major difference between allergies and intolerances which is why I am so perplexed. If he did a skin prick test, those are allergies. There is no way he can determine a food intolerance from skin testing.

What kind of symptoms did you have??

If spelt gave you the itchies, then you are gluten intolerant for sure.

If you are not showing any signs of a yeast infection, I do not understand why you are taking a powerful anti-fungal. This is my opinion, and I am not a doctor and you should do what's best for you. But if I were being treated for 8 months by someone and I still had that awful burning pain you have, I would look for help elsewhere. Hon, you are obviously in distress.

I wasted too much time myself listening to doctors when all along, I had celiac.

As far as gluten-free baking goes, it is tricky as first, but we make a gluten-free sandwich bread that comes out "squishy" :) I can send you the recipe in a PM if you want?

I just reread everything you wrote here and the chocolate probably had soy lecithin and sugar in it and that may be why you had a reaction.

Try to avoid chocolate and sugar for a few weeks, okay?

The oats may NOT be gluten-free....check the label and tell me what kind it is.

Maybe we can get to the bottom of this. The few foods you are eating may not be nourishing enough.

A leaky gut protocol calls for:

Probiotics and digestive enzymes.

Do you have any of those enzymes? Take one before each meal.

Can you tolerate rice at all?

Why did he tell you to avoid root veggies?????

It sounds like you're dealing with a complex situation, and I can understand how frustrating it must be not to have a clear answer. Gut health can indeed play a significant role in various aspects of our well-being, including hair health.

I have found similar benefits from thiamine. I was diagnosed with celiac at 16 and never really recovered despite strict gluten and dairy free diet and no detectable antibodies on checkup bloodworks. I’ve tried stopping the b1 but start to feel bad again- I wanted my doctors to do more extensive testing for the different thiamine transporters and enzymes which would be a better indication if I was deficient or dependent on it but everyone dismisses it (there are know genetic mutations where you need to take it daily for life). I have looked into Thiamine Responsive Megablast Anemia and I have a lot of the more mild symptoms of the disease that manifest when thiamine isn’t given to the patient such as optic neuritis… I just find the parallels interesting. i think that celiacs could be a side issue of inflammation that resulted from vitamin deficiencies. I was eating a lot of sugar leading up to my diagnosis and since eating gluten free didn’t make me feel much better, I’m wondering if this was more the underlying issue (sugar heavily depletes b1). I usually take 1.5g thiamine a day.

Thank you for your welcome and reply.  Yes I've been carefully reading labels looking for everything in bold and have been amazed by what I have seen. However Heinz tomato and basil soup is wheat free so I m thinking I already have ulcers?  The acid could be causing the pain . My pain always starts in one place then follows the same route through me . GP confirmed that is the route of our digestive system.  So much pain from stabbing to tearing. If I throw in milk with lactose it's horrific.  Many years of it now, won't go into details but been seeing a consultant for a supposedly different problem . Wondering what damage has been done over the years. Many thanks for your reply. Wishing you the very best.

Welcome to the forum community, @Fluka66! Did you realize that the vast majority of all canned soups use wheat starch as a thickener, including such common commodities as Campbell's tomato soup?

Hello. Any help would really steady my nerves right now. I realised recently that certain food left me in agonising pain so eliminated from my diet. I also have a swollen lymph node. My very caring Dr did some blood tests and I went back the other day to see another equally caring Dr . She looked at the test results one result has come back with something wrong. It came very fast so I'm afraid I didn't catch what it was. Anyway the urgent referral to ENT. She did say as I had already eliminated gluten it wouldn't say anything on the results and neither Drs nor I were prepared to reintroduce gluten . I've just had some tomato soup and again in agony only thinking this must have aggravated maybe existing problems. Does anyone know what I'm facing now ? My swollen lymph node , pain when eating gluten and lactose and I'm assuming the acidity of tomatoes triggering pain.  I'm trying to stay calm and to be honest I've been in intolerable pain at times rendering me unable to stand up straight but I've always just got on with it . Guess I'm reaching out and would really appreciate any wise or unwise words at this stage. Wishing you all the very best as you live with this illness. Fluka66
