Canyon Bakehouse?

Has anyone tried their products? Right now I eat Udi's bread and I really love it. But the store I shop at here has a bunch of canyon bakehouse prodcuts they rave about and their cranberry muffins look SO good and I've been eyeballing them for months. But I haven't gotten them because I saw someone on this forum saying that they aren't trustworthy or certified (even though it says they are?) and saying they got all sick from their products and stuff and they sounded pretty pissed... so idk which is true, are they safe or not safe? They look good and I'm tired of just wondering...

Have you looked at thier website? They are certified. the owner has Celiac. All they make is gluten-free. I like thier products. I m not "super sensitive". I'mjust a regular Celiac.

Sometimes people have reactions to other ingredients or things they also ate. Some people haven't been gluten-free very long and are still healing. I have even seen people who obviously got the stomach virus thier kids just have but are sure its gluten. Sometimes we have people I call "Drive-bys". They register and make 1 or 2 posts to trash a particular product. They never post again. Sometimes, I wonder if some of them are people the company fired.

They are certified but super senstitves do not eat any of these processed foods. They are not able to eat Udis either. Perhaps you are not as supersensitive as you think?

Okay good to know, and I'm not sure actually, I do know that I react really easily to CC and was told I'm supersensitive, I do best when literally all I'm eating is rice and vegetables, but I have been able to eat gluten-free crackers and stuff, only glutino ones. the nut this, crunchmaster etc. make me sick. It seems like most processed foods make me sick, I'm a poor college student who cannot grow my own food or anything so I do need to try store bought products or else I'll starve. It's hard to tell, I've only been gluten-free just under a year and still trying to figure out what does and doesnt effect me.

Canyon Bakehouse is not certified, and I reacted to it the one time I dared try it. (C'mon, FDA! get those regs in place, already!)

Gluten free almost a year and you can only tolerate rice and vegs?

Have you been checked out by a GI doctor, hon?

I can tolerate other things but I'm scared to try a lot of things, too. I've had a lot of "gluten-free" things make me sick, and yeah I have a GI doctor. If things are made in a dedicated facility then I'm fine, like Enjoy life products are something I eat without a problem. And I've eaten a ton of those fruity pebbles treats ever since I was diagnosed. But Amy's makes me sick which I've seen is common anyway, food for life, same story there. All lay's products etc etc. I eat glutino, schar, udi's and enjoy life products but I have to be careful of glutino now because of some of their stuff packed with eggs and dairy. Pamela's made me really sick every time I ate it and Bob's Red Mill made me sick too. Haven't found beans or chips I could have without feeling crappy yet, blah. And once I'm glutened I'm screwed, I don't get the stomach cramps and D for a few days( I WISH!) I'm bedridden for 2 weeks, with a billion symptoms, severe nausea and terrible weight loss and muscle wasting, paleness etc. and neurological ones pretty bad. (myoclonus and tremors, dizziness, brain fog, depression, at my low point I had a crappy seizure)

I see people posted at the very bottom saying it is actually certified, but I was unsure if this person was actually getting sick or not because from my experience, if anyone has ever gotten sick from a product I will almost surely get sick

Yes, I can relate. My Neuro symptoms are the worst for me. CC Glutenings take me down for weeks. Hate that! ugh.

BUT

that does not make me fear eating! Fear serves no purpose, so I, too, stick with dedicated facilities. Bob's and Pamela's are Certified, but if they bother you, then don't eat them.

I thought Canyon Bakehouse bread was good (better than Udis)! I do not buy many packaged breads because I am lucky that my hubs bakes it. But we keep some frozen and it is from Canyon Bakehouse.

As we tried to explain to you, just because one person has some problem with it, doesn't mean you will. It may have nothing to do with gluten.

You can find people on here or at the mall that get sick from eating green peppers or celery. Does that mean you can't eat it? There would actually be nothing you could eat in the whole world if you only ate stuff that made no one sick, ever.

Are you looking for reasons not to eat things? Maybe you should go back to the doctor? Maybe simple, cooked, whole foods and some digestive emzymes?

I'm not trying to be mean. I'm just being blunt and get you to think of a few things. :)

Yeah they suck so much! Sounds like we're pretty similar then lol blahh not fun!

Yeah for sure. I do eat starkist tuna in water, and peanut butter as my sources for protein and the tuna does not seem to make me sick. I make a lot of stir fries and things like that, and pizza with the udi's pizza crust which are always super good. I finally tried olive oil the past couple days and could not tolerate it even though I spent days researching to find what was supposedly the safest one and now I'm sick again but caught it quickly. :( Oh nice, that's good I bet and thank you I think I'll switch over to that. I'd like to find tortillas I can have instead of the bread, but have yet to find any I know are safe. Are there any you can tolerate, do you know? A lot of people say mission brand, is it actually safe from CC though? :(

No lol it's the opposite, I'm trying to look for validation that things ARE safe to eat. I've been trying a lot of new things the last few months and was doing well but then got very sick as a result of trying, and I'm starting with the one new food a week rule and trying to find things that will be safe to add. I just want to make sure I'm getting some input as to whether it's a good idea to try something or not, because the one time I didn't do it, with the stupid tortillas, it set me way back and I am moving soon and have to work and save up my money and I can't afford to be bedridden for weeks or laying around in the hospital

But, if you think that way, hon, you're going to find yourself eating nothing. That's not good.

Let me explain something. Maybe it will help.

On this site, for every single product that is posted about ---there will be SOMEONE who will say "I got sick!!" from it. And then, panic ensues.

Why? Because people may have different food intolerances or another reason why it affected that ONE person. I have a weird histamine intolerance going on right now. I cannot tolerate too many foods with high histamine levels--which means no eggs, cultured or fermented foods, soybean, berries, citrus, fish, Wine (dammit! :)) and chocolate! arrgh! I have burning skin, swollen eyelids, neuro problems, musculoskeletal pain, D, etc. that flared up in the past few weeks.

I KNOW it is not gluten I am ingesting causing this.

So, if I "react" to Glutino crackers or mayonnaise, for example, and come on here and declare "Glutino crackers and Hellman's mayo made me sick!" does that mean it has gluten in it ? nope! Does it mean it is not safe? Nope. Does it mean I am so super sensitive I cannot eat packaged foods? Nope.

It just means I can't eat it right now. (I was accidentally CCed nearly 8 weeks ago --because I AM a sensitive celiac-- and my system is still jacked up and inflamed.

I just discussed this with my doctor yesterday. He told me it will pass and to give it time.

It's not always about gluten CC in products that is the reason why we feel sick. Honest.

And so, you may be intolerant of many foods --as I seem to be right now, but it does not mean you cannot enjoy some packaged foods from dedicated facilities and it does not mean that just because one person became ill from one product, that you will, too.

I hope this puts your mind at ease a little?

Thank you for this, it does make me feel better. I ate just plain rice a couple of hours ago and still feel really sick, I think I just have to take it easy, it seems like when I get sick I just can't eat things for a while and it sucks. omg yeah that sucks, blah. I get SUPER bad joint pain too, mostly in my hips, it makes me feel like i'm 80 years old. It seems like there are other things I am having reactions to and can't pinpoint what they are. I'm wondering if I should cut out allll dairy and soy, I haven't cut out soy before and never really paid attention. idk. it sucks it's so up and down :( brown rice noodles seem to make me nauseas, it seems like only quinoa pasta sits perfectly with me, everything else makes me feel kind of sick. I sometimes wonder if I'm developing a problem with rice? ughh

Elizabeth, how often do you eat? Do you have breakfast, lunch and dinner?

If not, digesting food when your tummy has been empty for some time, is hard on your system. :)

And you said you were in college, but be careful with drinking  I could be very dangerous with low body weight.

I hope you feel better soon.

Rice is one of the most hypo-allergenic foods you can eat. It rarely causes a problem for people, but it is possible, of course.

To feel "kind of sick" from everything makes me wonder...are you being CCed somehow? Do you live with WEs (wheat eaters?)

Okay, so let's see if I understand this right.

Foods that work for you:

udi's pizza crust

quinoa pasta

starkist tuna

Enjoy life products

fruity pebbles

schar products

some glutino products

white rice (except this last time)

vegetables

Foods that don't work:

brown rice pasta

an olive oil

Amy's products

Food for life products

Bob's Red Mill products

Pamela's products

beans and chips tried so far

Would that be about right? If that's the case, at least you can eliminate some possibilities so you don't have to worry about investigating them.

- Fructose malabsorption is not going to be a problem or you'd be having more issues with veggies, and you do well on those.

- Corn is unlikely to be an issue. It's frequently used in the processing of white rice (which you said you do well with usually, yes?) and it is a component of the Udi's pizza crusts and many glutino products. So whatever is making you ill in the chips, it's not that, which ups the chances that there will be a corn chip you can have, somewhere, I would bet.

- artificial dyes aren't a problem or those fruity pebbles would stomp you.

- pesticides aren't a problem or the veggies wouldn't be working for you.

It's hard to see see one unifying problem with the foods that are making you ill that wouldn't automatically exclude foods that you do well with, honestly. IrishHeart's concern about gluten cc sounds like a distinct possibility, although you may also have hit the nail on the head when you said that you feel like everything you eat after you've been glutened makes you feel sick. Some folks seem have a rather lingering reaction to gluten and that's pretty much how I've heard it described, as though their stomach just hates everything for a while after they've been glutened.

My daughter has this and everything she eats for nearly a week after she's been glutened makes her stomach hurt quite a bit. Made it a real pain for us to figure out what was going on with here for a while, because everything seemed to make her feel awful, and then foods that would seem fine one day (when she wasn't glutened) would cause trouble a few days later (when she was glutened).

Also, you mention some sensitivities. Have you ever been tested for allergies at all? That might be of use, especially if there are multiple allergies going on. Extreme weight loss as you describe is one of my major symptoms for my food allergies (along with nasty brain fog).

Do you know how your vitamin levels are at the moment? Have you been tested for your vitamin levels? Can you take any supplements? Many vitamin deficiencies can cause problems with how we tolerate foods and how well we heal after getting glutened. For example, molybdenum deficiency can affect people's ability to process sulfite properly and create a temporary sulfite sensitivity until it's taken care of.

With such a limited diet that you're eating right now, if you can tolerate supplements without making things worse, it might be worth it to get a multi-vitamin. Country Life LLC makes some that are certified by the GFCO to be below 10 ppm. I'm unsure about their status with regards to dairy, eggs, or soy, however.

Can you eat any meat? You mentioned tuna but I didn't see anything else. If you could get something fatty and high calorie, that might help keep your weight up while you're looking for answers.

Also, since you can tolerate quinoa pasta, have you checked out other quinoa products? If you are eating Ancient Harvest quinoa pasta and do well with it, that company also sells whole grain quinoa and quinoa flakes, which would be another good source of calories, protein, and carbs. You can even make some homemade 'quinoa milk,' just like you would homemade rice milk, and use it to make a smoothie type of thing with whatever produce you can tolerate.

Always so frustrating when you feel miserable but don't know why, yet. Wishing you well in figuring this out!

I don't know if you are considering this, but there is often a delay between eating something and symptoms.

For instance if I eat something on Monday that has cc. I will feel fine, mainly. I do notice irritability sometimes. It's the next day, Tuesday, when I feel the reaction and everything I eat will give me a stomach ache, even if it isn't any of the things with cc. With my son, it takes 2 days for a reaction. He won't feel it until Wednesday. When we looked for something we ate that day, we couldn't figure it out. It took us many months to possibly years to realize all this.

We could mainly tell because when we eliminate the thing that bothers us, we get better. It took a long time to realize which things to try to eliminate first. Then we could reintroduce the other things to find that we could eat them.

Just because something seems to give you a reaction doesn't mean that is where the reaction is coming from.

I agree.

It is not always gluten CC and it is not always easy to pinpoint and it is not always sudden-onset.

This is the same for me, for many foods. Gluten is quicker--within hours, I have the neuro stuff coming on, and then, the rest of the symptoms reveal themselves for days (and days <_< after.)

..but other food intolerances (MSG, soy, dairy, food additives and chemicals) are delayed. They were baffling and figuring them out was maddening. But it can be done.

Exactly! me too. almost 2 weeks to get past an accidental CC --but symptoms lingered for 8 more. Asked the GI doc (he is very celiac-savvy :) ) and he said "well, of course. The inflammatory response takes a LONG time to die back down." I said "But no one else seems to take that long. WTF?" He kiddingly said "um, you're special? No, really it is because your gut is still healing. Sorry. "

There's the "everybody's different" thing again. :)

This is why I wonder if the OP isn't getting trace gluten somewhere and it has made her fearful of eating too many things. She feels sick --she says--after almost anything she eats.

BTW----Elizabeth!--where did you go, hon? Are you feeling any better?

As a side note, it seems that medical science has evolved in the past 5-6 years regarding Celiac Disease, and I am now catching up. It seems that anything that disrupts the microbiome sufficiently enough can--in genetically susceptible individuals--lead to Celiac Disease. I have been reading now that antibiotics, excessive simple carbohydrates such as refined sugars and starches, the manner of birth such as C-section vs vaginal delivery, the diversity of one's diet, the presence of certain bacteria or viruses, can all contribute to microbiome dysbiosis, which can lead to Celiac. This is fascinating research.
    • GardeningForHealth
I mostly eat healthy. My diet has varied over the past 10 years but mostly consisted of meals I cooked at home made from scratch. Ingredients I used over the years include (not in order): non-wheat grains such as teff, sorghum, millet, and eggs, butter, cheese, some milk, meat (poultry, red meat, but very little processed meat), gluten-free baked bread (mostly Canyon Bakehouse brand), vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes, peanuts, chocolate (not in the past 6 months). However, the mistakes I made in my diet are that I consumed too much sugar and carbohydrates from gluten-free baked goods that I baked myself at home such as gluten-free dessert items, and also I ate pretty much the same exact meals over and over, so a great lack of diversity in what I ate. I got lazy. I think this messed up my microbiome. The meals I ate were mostly healthy though. I always made sure to eat vegetables and fruits on a daily basis.  I have checked for nutrient deficiencies over the years and I am sometimes low in Vitamin D. I started supplementing it after that. What concerns me is the progressive nature of the food intolerances, which indicates the gut is not healing and has been leaking all along.

It sounds like you're dealing with a complex situation, and I can understand how frustrating it must be not to have a clear answer. Gut health can indeed play a significant role in various aspects of our well-being, including hair health.

I have found similar benefits from thiamine. I was diagnosed with celiac at 16 and never really recovered despite strict gluten and dairy free diet and no detectable antibodies on checkup bloodworks. I’ve tried stopping the b1 but start to feel bad again- I wanted my doctors to do more extensive testing for the different thiamine transporters and enzymes which would be a better indication if I was deficient or dependent on it but everyone dismisses it (there are know genetic mutations where you need to take it daily for life). I have looked into Thiamine Responsive Megablast Anemia and I have a lot of the more mild symptoms of the disease that manifest when thiamine isn’t given to the patient such as optic neuritis… I just find the parallels interesting. i think that celiacs could be a side issue of inflammation that resulted from vitamin deficiencies. I was eating a lot of sugar leading up to my diagnosis and since eating gluten free didn’t make me feel much better, I’m wondering if this was more the underlying issue (sugar heavily depletes b1). I usually take 1.5g thiamine a day.

Thank you for your welcome and reply.  Yes I've been carefully reading labels looking for everything in bold and have been amazed by what I have seen. However Heinz tomato and basil soup is wheat free so I m thinking I already have ulcers?  The acid could be causing the pain . My pain always starts in one place then follows the same route through me . GP confirmed that is the route of our digestive system.  So much pain from stabbing to tearing. If I throw in milk with lactose it's horrific.  Many years of it now, won't go into details but been seeing a consultant for a supposedly different problem . Wondering what damage has been done over the years. Many thanks for your reply. Wishing you the very best.
