Selenium?

I have been doing some research online about the possible connection between selenium, hypothyroid (slow metabolism) and celiac. This mineral is necessary for a normal metabolism, and if your intestines are compromised you might not be absorbing enough- contributing to a slow metabolism/inability to gain weight in people like myself (not celiac but definately gluten intolerant). Anyone care to comment? Also, apart from this mineral, has anything else helped?
