Non-Celiac Gluten Free Withdrawals?

My 12 Year-Old son was diagnosed with Celiac disease In February of this year. After having the rest of the family tested and receiving negative results we (wife, daughter and myself) decided to have the entire family go gluten free in support of our son. We felt that it would be easier for him if we had a gluten free house and chose gluten free friendly restaurants while dining out. For the 1st 2 months or so things went well for all of us.

The issue is that in the last 2-3 weeks I have not felt well at all. Whenever I eat no matter how much or how little I feel kind of sick within 15-30 minutes. The best way to describe it is that I feel hungry, but that type of hungry when you go too long with out eating. (Does that make any sense?) I can eat more, but I still feel the same way. Could this be a form of withdrawal from not eating gluten? I would have thought that I would feel bad right after the diet change not 2 months later. Does anyone else that has gone gluten free in support of a family member have similar experiences?

Non-celiac people can still be gluten-sensitive and there are countless symptoms of gluten withdrawal. Everyone is unique so what you describe could be a withdrawal symptom. Your post however reminded me of something I went through when I changed my diet.

When I first went gluten-free, I still ate a ton of gluten-free carbs, such as quinoa pasta, rice bread, rice pasta, certified gluten-free oats (with honey), steamed rice. I would be hungry soon shortly thereafter. Eventually, I read up on refined carbs and how they can digest too rapidly and spike blood glucose levels. Insulin then spikes to bring down blood glucose levels but sometimes it overshoots and brings blood glucose down too much too fast. Low blood sugar can make you hungry quickly, sometimes sleepy, etc. I subsequently switched to a paleo diet (lean meat, fish, vegetables, some fruit, some nuts, no grains, no dairy) and found it to be much more satisfying, less in between meal hunger, no post-meal distress, although I do snack quite a bit on carrots, celery, cukes, etc.

Long story short, you might consider tracking your refined carb intake relative to the sensation you are experiencing. Good luck.

I think you are probably right. Funny thing is I knew all that. I guess my focus has been on not eating gluten, not so much what I am replacing the gluten with. A lot of the processed gluten free alternatives appear to be a healthy alternative. I do find myself grabbing more carb filled snacks then I would have before. I will try increasing my protein, vegetable and fruit intake and see how it works out.

    • Hi, I've never been on a forum before but thought I might find some answers here.  I have never been tested for celiac but a nurse practitioner I saw a few years ago told me she thought I would benefit from a gluten free diet.  At first, I thought I could never do this but after some encouragement I did try.  I did feel much better after going gluten free.  She never tested me for celiac. I turned 50 years old last year and I had a colonoscopy for the first time and had three polyps removed.  The surgeon said that my colon looked like I was a chronic laxative user.  I haven't used a laxative for a very long time.  I was at the time drinking a natural tea to help me to have bowel movements.  Before starting the tea I had always had difficulty with bowel movements and never had them once a day but with the tea I was able to go once a day. At the end of last month I developed severe pain after I would eat (I had my gallbladder removed at the age of 19).  One night the pain got so bad my husband had to drive me to the ER.  My liver functions were high as well as a few other things.  They did a CT scan of my abdomen and pelvis that showed wall thickening of my transverse colon and minimal irregularity involving the transverse colon.  My descending and sigmoid colon were collapsed.  There were a few tiny mesenteric lymph nodes present on the right.  They diagnosed me officially with colitis but said that most likely I had a gallstone (even though I don't have a gallbladder) that had come from the liver and had gotten stuck in the common bile duct (it did not show up on the CT scan).  I usually have a high ferritin level too.  I've been home from the hospital stay for about a month now and still have tenderness in the epigastric area. Some of this may not have anything to do with celiac but was wondering if anyone has been diagnosed with celiac by CT scan or colonoscopy or if anyone has had the same problems that I have had and found out what has caused it.  I cannot see the gastroenterologist who saw me in the hospital for a couple of months.  Can you have celiac and not have diarrhea as I am just the opposite? Any help would be appreciated!  Thanks!  
    • I had an acne flair up after going gluten free but it ended up improving and some long-term back acne I had been dealing with actually went away.  I think going gluten free was a shock to my system and at first I actually felt worse but after about a month things got better. 
    • Ok guys!   The original post was 3 years ago!  Ingredients, manufacturing methods,  labeling, etc.  may have changed during that time.  A lot of companies have really come a long way on gluten-free in the last 3-4 years.
    • They didn't suggest any probiotic support. Ultimately the side-effects of this drug stabilized approaching the end of the course of treatment, though after it was finished, I was perhaps a bit improved, but no profound symptom resolution for me. Darn! The search goes on.
    • Thankyou I have found that I became intolerant of dairy and having cut it out feeling better but if I come into accidental consumption the symptoms are similar to that of gluten but not as severe .. Patience ay ?
