Possibility Of Parasites Infestation Causing Celiac Disease

I had a terrible parasite infestion before diagnosis. It lasted about a year. So many awful critters...too many types to mention. Scared me to death. It took 90 days of herbs to get rid of them. Shortly after...I was diagnosed with Celiac. I was just wondering if anyone else experienced this. I was probably Celiac for 10 years before being diagnosed. I had 4 bowel obstructions and never had a day without diahrrea and constipation alternating. So much stomach pain and suffering. So glad to have gotten gluten out of my diet. The only problem I have now is peripheral neuropathy and it drives me crazy. I guess the parasites could be b/c my immune system has been compromised for years. I know that in the past, the surgeon alwasy told me after each obstruction that I had "no parasites." That was forshadowing b/c I didn't know what parasites were and wish I could still say that. Once you've had a bad infestation...you always worry that they will come back.

By the title I thought I'd be talking about a 'celiac trigger', but your celiac symptoms predated the parasites which led to the dx, if I read that right.

Sounds like a good call (finally, right?) by somebody to test for celiac disease. I'm a little curious on the details of that, if you happen to know.

PN(periph neuro) is pretty common around here. You've probably already had vitamin levels checked, but there might be good ideas in some PN threads here.

A few questions for you. How did you learn of the parasites? How did you know what they were? Did you take the herbs on your own? Or were they prescribed?

I began to worry about my daughter and I recently after my little cat was found to have roundworms. I wouldn't have thought about us having them but some people online elsewhere were telling me we could have them. I freaked and ordered some herbal things.

But after I took the first awful tasting dose, I decided not to take any more. The product contained wormwood and in looking it up online it said it should not be taken internally and although it killed parasites, it was far harder on the host. It listed a bunch of reasons not to take it, including liver and kidney failure. Thankfully I don't think that one dose caused any harm.

I couldn't take any other of the herbal remedies because I am intolerant to something they contain. And I wasn't about to go to the Dr. for a parasite test because frankly I don't think I had any symptoms. And the chances of us getting roundworms from the cat are slim. Now how the cat got them, I do not know. I can only figure that she had them since we got her. The vet did diagnose lungworms and she was treated for that but perhaps she had the round worms at that time too. She did have symptoms. I just didn't know.

I never had any food issues or diarrhea before I got my parasite. I got it in Mexico and had it for several years before finally realizing the problem. Ever since I've had IBS of sorts. I've found out I was allergic to rye and pistachio, and I am also now lactose intolerant. The herbalist told me parasites can damage the intestinal lining and it can cause intolerances and allergies, and it can take years to heal. I guess it kind of creates a leaky gut. Yuck. So to answer the main question (I think) yes this also happened to me. Parasites are awful.

My son recently had giarrdia. I had him on an herbal thyme product and that did not take out the parasites on its own. I can't remember how long he was on it perhaps about a month. I took him to an osteopathic doctor. I was horrified when he recommended antibiotics as I expected a natural cure. But he said it was the very safest, most, effective cure. We did a 5 day dose, but later had to do a ten day dose. Besides we used an herbal product named Paracid for a month after the first antibiotics. The 5 day dose of antibiotics plus Paracid did not get rid of the giardia. During the second batch my son got a yeast infection, so we used candicid.

These parasites can be tough. I saw a critter come out with my stool one day. It was a white diamond with a 1/2 inch tail. I was using the Thyme product and used it for a few months. After I checked for parasites and it was negative. I think perhaps the Thyme and Probiotic products were effective for me.

The products I used for me were:

A Good Thyme by Nutri-spec

Immuno-Synbiotic by Nutri-spec

How were you diagnosed with the parasite? What kind of tests are done for that? I know little to nothing about this area of medicine so would love to hear more.

Infection can trigger celiac disease if there is a predisposition to it so yes it is possible that the parasites indirectly lead to the development of celiac disease. I am curious what types of critters these were. Tapeworms? Protozoa? You mention bowel obstructions so I would assume that roundworms were involved? Also I'm not sure that herbal treatment would necessarily be effective in completely eliminating a parasite infection...

Interesting thoughts.

I wonder....I think there are as many (or more people) in denial about parasites, than people with celiac, or gluten intolerance.

I've wondered if there isn't a connection between the two also. But, I've also wondered if celiac makes you more predisposed to parasite infection. I've also wondered if it is a trigger.

From what I understand; similar to celiac, parasite infection is often difficult to diagnose, and there doesn't seem to be a lot of medical training (our GPs) on the subject.

You do a stool test. You collect the stool by sitting on plastic to go. Then you put it in some tubes which are provided for the test. These contain some fluids. Shake them up and send them to the lab. They can check for parasites, digestive enzymes, and blood.

Who does this test and what would cause you to have it done?

This is Floral.  I didn't know my initial posting would get so many responses.  I always had a bad stomach and things just kept getting worse.  10 yrs of bowels obstructions followed by parasitic infestation.  And how did I know?  I could see this mucousy stuff floating in toilet.  I research it and realized what I was seeing.  Didn't know what to do.  Talked to my doctor who refused to treat or believe me.  I actually wrote an ebook about my experience but haven't published it yet.  I started taking Hulda Clarks formula and started seeing them evacuate.  I mean thousands of them.  If you google photos of parasites you will see each and every ugly one that I saw -- very frightening.  It took months for them to go away and perhaps someone was right when they said I didn't get rid of them all.  It has taken me a year to recover and during this year I developed food allergies.  I was test with hydrogen breath tests which were positive for lactose and fructose intolerance.  Then the Celiac test was positive.  I am feeling better now that I am 100% compliant with no gluten...and sometimes we are all a little resistent to going all tlhe way with something even though it will ultimately save our lives.  I do wonder if I still may have some parasites but they would have to be mcroscopic at this point b/c I do know what to look for.  I thank God every day for getting me through that storm and would love to talk with you all individually about your experiences.  I saw a video on line by an MS doctor in Baltimore MD who said that glutenism after parasites was very common indeed.  It was in looking for that video that I ended up here again. Obviously, this subject needs to be researched and written about in depth...and now I really need to figure out how to get my ebook up in Kindle form so we can continue the dicussion.  (and education)

More than half of everyone on the planet has large parasites and most of us would have several species, I bet everyone has a tiny sub clinical parasite or ten. We are evolved to live with them so it's no big deal for most people but I bet it causes gut problems in others. I've been extensively tested for them though both anti body and stool tests and never found a single one. Doesn't mean they aren't there though, sometimes they are very small and hard to find.

You need to do around 8 stool test to be sure you haven't missed one and that's only the ones that live in your gut.. The majority of gut parasites can be killed with mebendazole quickly and easily, totally safe drug, even safer than herbs I'd say.

Wormwood tincture is not dangerous to take internally. I had food intolerance especially dairy and wheat and while I was doing  a parasite cleanse I found out that my allergies are gone. I keep on taking worm wood as a tincture everyday for the last 3 months along with black walnut and clove. All three herbs in separate bottles. I take clove first thing in the morning because it kills the eggs. After half an hour I take the other two with water . All three again before bed. Wormwood is very bitter. Mixing it with black walnut is better. People who have pets need to do regular maintenance . We also give a tiny amount to our pets. Wormwood is not a poison and it helps the liver detoxify. There are individuals provide inaccurate information on line without testing the product themselves.

No.  Of course not.  Very very few people actually have parasites.

Half of these statements are half-truths or just straight up false.

Most people DO have parasites. Like a poster above mentioned, we evolved WITH them. They have chosen vertebrates as their home. Celiac disease (especially in children) is often fatal if undiagnosed. Given the human diet dating back the last 500-1000 years and "... Amber waves of grain..." if these parasites weren't HELPING you by HELPING themselves stay alive to reproduce and do their life's duty... Wouldn't you think that celiac and autoimmune diseases would be on the DOWNFALL rather than the uprise???

Diagnosed with Celiac AFTER completing treatment for a parasitic infection. But when trying to clear one parasite causing you discomfort, you got rid of the ones keeping you (and themselves) tolerant to a wide range of allergies so your immune system wouldn't try to expel them... Causing damage to your gut... Like what happens with other less friendly parasites, especially if they're out of balance. I. E. Leaky gut.

Here, long story short. This post is old but I ended up here and after finishing my masters in biochemistry with a thesis on the neurophysiological and neuro-biopsychological response to parasitism under stress... I'm asking anyone who ends up here as well to take the time to read this article, avoid processed anything, stress less, and go out and enjoy nature and mindfulness more. The power of your that your brain/thoughts have on your immune system and it's responses are SO INCREDIBLY UNDERRATED.

Have non-celiac gluten intolerance. I was diagnosed with babeciocis and treated with azithromycin and atovoquonne for 5 days. It did help. Now my gluten allergy comes and goes depending on the probiotics I’m on. Babeciocis is a blood parasite similar to malaria and infects you the same way as lyme disease. Wormwood does help to relieve the gluten symptoms. I received the parasite diagnose from the parasitology center in arizona through a blood smear that i did and mail back to them. Sad that it took an outside company to provide my primary care with a diagnosis.  My primary care then provided treatment.

Hi,   Not saying Thiamine (B1) couldn't be an issue as well, but Mg was definitely the cause of my problems. It's the only thing that worked. I supplemented with B vitamins, but that didn't change anything, in fact they made me sick. Mg stopped all my muscle pain (HCTZ) within a few months and fixed all the intestinal problems HCTZ caused as well. Mom has an allergy to some sulfa drugs (IgG Celiac too), but I don't think I've ever taken them. Mg boosted my energy as well. It solved a lot of problems. I take 1000mg MgO a day with no problems. I boost absorption with Vitamin D. Some people can't take MgO,  like mom, she takes Mg Glycinate. It's one of those things that someone has try and find the right form for themselves. Everyone's different. Mg deficiency can cause anxiety and is a treatment for it. A pharmacist gave me a list of drugs years ago that cause Mg deficiency: PPIs, H2 bockers, HCTZ, some beta blockers (metoprolol which I've taken -- horrible side effects), some anti-anxiety meds too were on it. I posted because I saw he was an IgG celiac. He's the first one I've seen in 20 years, other than my family. We're rare. All the celiacs I've met are IgA. Finding healthcare is a nightmare. Just trying to help. B

It sounds like you've been through a lot with your son's health journey, and it's understandable that you're seeking answers and solutions. Given the complexity of his symptoms and medical history, it might be beneficial to explore a few avenues: Encourage your son to keep a detailed journal of his symptoms, including when they occur, their severity, any triggers or patterns, and how they impact his daily life. This information can be valuable during medical consultations and may help identify correlations or trends. Consider seeking opinions from specialized medical centers or academic hospitals that have multidisciplinary teams specializing in gastrointestinal disorders, especially those related to Celiac disease and Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EOE). These centers often have experts who deal with complex cases and can offer a comprehensive evaluation. Since you've already explored alternative medicine with a nutrition response doctor and a gut detox diet, you may want to consider consulting a functional medicine practitioner. They take a holistic approach to health, looking at underlying causes and imbalances that may contribute to symptoms. Given his low vitamin D levels and other nutritional markers, a thorough nutritional assessment by a registered dietitian or nutritionist specializing in gastrointestinal health could provide insights into any deficiencies or dietary adjustments that might help alleviate symptoms. In addition to routine tests, consider asking about more specialized tests that may not be part of standard screenings. These could include comprehensive stool analyses, food intolerance testing, allergy panels, or advanced imaging studies to assess gut health.

Hello, I am a 45 year old mom, who was diagnosed at 29 with Celiac. My now 14 year old son was diagnosed just before his 4th birthday. Needless to say, we are old pros with the diet. He was experiencing some issues, overall health took a major plummet a year ago, and through a bit of work, was diagnosed with EOE. Tried diet alone, but his follow up endoscopy didn't show the improvements his DR. wanted to see, so I tried the medication. (Steroid). He became extremely backed up, and they had him taking Miralax daily. His health plummeted. He is a straight A honor's 8th grader who plays club soccer very competitively. His health continued to decline and at 13 had a colonoscopy and another upper gi. (He was still compacted even with the prep). I finally pulled him off all meds and mira lax, after reading much negative literature online, and put him on a gut detox diet and took him to a nutrition response dr. Finally things have improved. However...over a year later and he is having relapse stomach pain, debilitating stomach pain. Missing a day of school a week, to three this week. This is where we downward spiral with him. He says it doesn't feel the same as when he has gotten backed up before. He is eating prunes, taking his supplements, drinking water...all of the things. Yet, he is feeling horrible. Pain is abdomen, headache, lethargy, diarrhea . He is on a strict gluten dairy, egg free diet. He has adapted well in regards to diet. But I feel like we are missing something here. He is too active, too outgoing to be feeling sick all of the time. His Bilirubin is constantly high. His white blood count always runs slightly low. His vitamin D was very low last time he ran tests, (last month) when he was sick for a week. His celiac markers show negative, so it isn't that. His last endoscopy showed no Eosinaphils in his esophagus.  I have taken him to multiple Ped. Gastro specialists. They run tests, and we get zero answers. I meticulously go through labs, hoping to make some sense and maybe catch something. Any thoughts or ideas would greatly be appreciated.

But if you have been off of wheat for a period of weeks/months leading up to the testing it will likely turn out to be negative for celiac disease, even if you actually have celiac disease. Given your symptoms when consuming gluten, we certainly understand your reluctance to undergo  the "gluten challenge" before testing but you need to understand that the testing may be a waste of time if you don't. What are you going to do if it is negative for celiac disease? Are you going to go back to merrily eating wheat/barley/rye products while living in pain and destroying your health? You will be in a conundrum. Do I or do I not? And you will likely have a difficult time being consistent with your diet. Celiac disease causes inflammation to the small bowel villous lining when gluten containing grains are consumed. This inflammation produces certain antibodies that can be detected in the blood after they reach a certain level, which takes weeks or months after the onset of the disease. If gluten is stopped or drastically reduced, the inflammation begins to decrease and so do the antibodies. Before long, their low levels are not detectable by testing and the antibody blood tests done for diagnosing celiac disease will be negative. Over time, this inflammation wears down the billions of microscopic, finger-like projections that make up the lining and form the nutrient absorbing layer of the small bowel where all the nutrition in our food is absorbed. As the villi bet worn down, vitamin and mineral deficiencies typically develop because absorption is compromised. An endoscopy with biopsy of the small bowel lining to microscopically examine this damage is usually the second stage of celiac disease diagnosis. However, when people cut out gluten or cut back on it significantly ahead of time before the biopsy is done, the villous lining has already experienced some healing and the microscopic examination may be negative or inconclusive. I'm not trying to tell you what to do I just want you to understand what the consequences of going gluten free ahead of testing are as far as test results go so that you will either not waste your time in having the tests done or will be prepared for negative test results and the impact that will have on your dietary decisions. And, who are these "consultants" you keep talking about and what are their qualifications? You are in the unenviable position that many who joint this forum have found themselves in. Namely, having begun a gluten free diet before getting a proper diagnosis but unwilling to enter into the gluten challenge for valid testing because of the severity of the symptoms it would cause them.

Thank you very much for your reply. I hadn't heard of celiac disease but began to notice a pattern of pain. I've been on the floor more than once with agonising pain but this was always put down to another abdominal problem consequently I've been on a roundabout of backwards and forwards with another consultant for many years. I originally questioned this diagnosis but was assured it was the reason for my pain. Many years later the consultant gave up and I had a new GP. I started to cut out certain food types ,reading packets then really started to cut out wheat and went lactose free. After a month I reintroduced these in one meal and ended screaming in agony the tearing and bloating pain. With this info and a swollen lymph node in my neck I went back to the GP.  I have a referral now . I have also found out that acidic food is causing the terrible pain . My thoughts are this is irritating any ulcers. I'm hoping that after a decade the outlook isn't all bad. My blood test came back with a high marker but I didn't catch what it was. My GP and I have agreed that I won't go back on wheat just for the test due to the pain , my swollen lymph node and blood test results.  Trying to remain calm for the referral and perhaps needed to be more forceful all those years ago but I'm not assertive and consultants can be overwhelming. Many thanks for your reply . Wishing you all the best.
