what does it mean when I post and the blue box that appears on the left next to post has a pencil? Did it post, can people actually read it?

When you are new, your first 10 posts have to be approved by a moderator before it magically appears.

After it is approved, it will appear. Obviously, this appeared because you saw it. We approve them as fast as we can. We are volunteers and sometimes we have other, less important things to do like housework or errands.
