I love In-N-Out, I know a lot of us do. Now, I'm not all save the animals and such, obviously since I eat them! And I also understand that person's humane treatment can be another person's inhumane treatment. For some (who imo are extremists) animals who are "caged" at all are treated inhumanely. I grew up on a beef farm, we rarely had a sick or injured cow but if we did and it was beyond the scope of our expertise we immediately called a vet. They'd be left to roam 100 acres at a time of pastures and woods and checked on at least twice a day, being sure every last moo was accounted for. I'd say our cows were very humanly treated can cared for.

Knowing how easy it is to treat cows kindly and with the respect that our food should be treated is what makes this so disturbing for me. And yet so heartening because a company did what was right. In-N-Out saw a company treating their cows badly (outright abuse) and cut ties. Just like that, just said we're not buying from you any more. This is the news story I found, beware it shows a few clips of the cows. I wouldn't let a kid watch it and I wouldn't watch it if you're sensitive. It broke my heart to see those poor cows, they should be put down so they don't suffer any more.

Anyway, I wanted to share for those of us who value companies with values. In-N-Out stood up and did the right thing in a difficult situation for a large company. So, on top of providing awesome milkshakes (for those of us not dairy free) and kick butt burgers, they're making every effort to give us humanely cared for and slaughtered beef. I just may have to go out to eat today, it isn't really in my budget but I want to show my support for what they did and the best way to do that is always with money. Besides, awesome milkshakes.

Ugh, that company's still selling their cows to SOMEone.

Kudos to In-n-Out. Interesting to get your beef farm background perspective, too. :)

It was my understanding from the news story that the "farm" is actually shut down pending the results of an investigation. So no one is buying their cows. :D With any luck someone with a brain and some humanity will be put in charge and stop electrocuting them. What I don't understand is in what world mistreating even a single cow is worth it in the end. Each individual cow is worth thousands of dollars, I know these companies are worth millions but as an accountant this really gets to me even if it didn't bother me otherwise. The cows can become sick or otherwise uneatable. Then it isn't just the money of the cow lost, it's the cost of disposing of it, the manpower etc. If I were this companies accountant I'd be having a real problem with this for a whole different list of reasons. It simply is bad business and costs too much.

In N Out is our go to fast food place. They are so careful about allergies, etc. Their fries are gluten free and who can beat those burgers?

NEVER get their spread on your burger. It is full of crumbs from spreading it on buns and dipping the spatula. I always get no spread and ask for a packet on the side. They have individual packets by the register.
