Mother Wasting Away

My mother is currently undergoing testing in the hospital to try to determine what is wrong with her. For years she has been having problems and no one seems to have any answers. She always been a small person but has gotten down to 89 lbs even though she eats. My father even makes her drink several Boosts a day and all she has ever managed to gain in a pound or two.

She also complains of days wehre she feels in a daze and"out of her head" she also gets shaky. In the past 3 years she has gone from a very intelligent woman to someone who can barely carry on a conversation. She has had MRI and many neurlogical workups and nothing shows up as abnormal. I have read that severe cases of Celiac Disease can cause severe nuerlogical problems because of malnutrition. Please....could this possibly be the answer?? We aren't getting any from the doctors.

I had many neurological symptoms before a diagnosis. Has she been tested for Diabetes? The fact that she is losing weight and feeling shaky could be symptoms.

Could you be more specific about her problems? Has she ever had an Endoscopy or Colonoscopy? What about diarrhea, bloating or even constipation. Is there any history of GI issues in the family? Where are your ancestors from? Many of us are of Northern european ancestry. I found that my "brain fog" came from dairy, maybe the Boost isn't the best supplement for her. I would print out some info on the neurological symptoms and show them to her doctors and then ask for a Celiac Panel to be done. Some of this information about Gluten Sensitivity is so new that older doctors aren't aware of it. I wish I could help you more with your Mum, I just lost mine in Feb and I miss her terribly.....Judy

If the doctors aren't finding anything else wrong it's worth a try. A large percentage of people are first diagnosed as adults. My father was 70.

She has been tested for diabetes a few times before with negative results. Her ancestors were mainly from Scotland. She has had GI issues for a very long time. She has had a colonoscopy over 10 years ago after which she was diagnosed with Diverticulitis. I haven't had a chance to ask her about diarrhea, bloating or constipation since learning about Celiac Disease. I spoke to my father late last night and Celiac Disease is on the doctor's list for possible diagnosis but has yet to under go testing. Thank you for responding.

Definitely she should be tested for celiac.. She does have some of the symptoms but some people just don't get symptoms at all so don't not get tested if she doesn't have certain symptoms because that doesn't matter.

Has she also had her thyroid checked?

Has anyone experimenced enlarged lymph nodes with celiac? Both in the neck and groin area. Imaging of both areas have said that lymph nodes are reactive in nature. However, they have been present for months and just wondering how long this may take to go down. Been gluten-free for about two months. Blood counts are normal.

Hmm interesting I just assumed that any “IGA” tests including the DPG iga would be negative in a person who is IGA deficient but maybe that is not the case for the DPG test.

If you were just diagnosed I can say that if you go 100% gluten-free should should see dramatic improvement of your symptoms over the next few months, but the hard part is to stay gluten-free. This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):

From the article I linked above: DGP-IgA and DGP-IgG (Deamidated Gliadin Peptide) Blood Tests for Celiac Disease These tests measure the levels of antibodies in the blood, but specifically targets deamidated gliadin peptides, which are a type of gluten protein that can trigger an immune response in people with celiac disease. The test is not always included in adults, but should be in cases with IgA deficiency.  I'm not sure if this is a grammatical error or not but in the context, two tests are being spoken of together so it could be intended to say, "These tests". I'll ask Scott about that.
