Bathroom Habits

I've been gluten-free for 7 months, dairy free for 4. I hate to bring up such a personal topic, but how worried should I be that my bowels are not even close to being formed even after all this time on the diet? It's been about a year and a half since I've had a "normal", meaning formed, stool. I am regular and only use the bathroom once a day, but am worried about how close I always am to it being diarrhea, it's like it's always right on the verge of that but a little bit better. Should I simply assume this is how people with celiac disease are and not expect to have another "normal" bathroom break again in my life?

Gillian, when is your colonoscopy? Make sure they biopsy, even if they don't see anything. You may very well have some type of colitis or possibly Chrohn's disease. It seems to me that you should be feeling better by now. I hope that they are able to figure out what else is going on, because there has got to be more wrong in you than just Celiac. You are in my prayers.

God bless,

Mariann

Thanks so much, Mariann. My doc already mentioned he will biopsy me for colitis, and I'm going to ask him to also take a few extra biopsies to check for microscopic colitis. A lot of the symptoms of MC sound like me. My colonoscopy is April 12th, it was originally set to be done in January but I had a virus at the time so they didn't want to risk the sedation. I'm really afraid of the colonoscopy but I know it must be done. I hope you're feeling well on the diet! Thanks again for your kind words!

The colonoscopy is not that bad, but the prep is the worst. I can't stomach the laxatives they make you take. I understand needing to be cleaned out, but they take it to the extreme with that stuff!

I hope that you do fine and your doctor is very careful to take a really good look. I wouldn't want them to miss anything obvious! You have been through far too much and I want this to be over for you. :(

And I am feeling much better on the diet. And getting contaminated less since the whole family is gluten-free. Except my husband, he is only partially gluten-free. But he won't get tested yet, so he doesn't have to stick to the diet. We had a bad gluten accident at a family party last weekend and we are all still recovering from that, but showing signs of improvement. Yeah!

God bless,

Mariann

You have three celiac disease specific antibody tests that are positive: Endomysial  Antibody IGA (aka, EMA), tTG-IGA, and tTG_IGG. Furthermore, your Immunoglobulin A at 55 is low, meaning you are IGA deficient. This one is not an antibody test for celaic disease per se but a measure of "total IGA" levels and if low (yours is low) it can suppress the individual antibody scores and even cause false negatives. So, yes, it definitely looks like you have celiac disease.   Do not yet begin a gluten free diet as your physician may refer you to a GI doc for an endoscopy/biopsy of the small bowel lining for confirmation of the antibody testing. This may help:

Hi, I received my labs via email yesterday and have not heard back from my doctor yet. Can anyone tell me if these results indicate I have Celiac?      Endomysial Antibody IgAPositive  Ft-Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA6  H0-3 (U/mL) - Negative 0 - 3 - Weak Positive 4 - 10 - Positive >10 - Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) has been identified as the endomysial antigen. Studies have demonstrated that endomysial IgA antibodies have over 99% specificity for gluten-sensitive enteropathy. FImmunoglobulin A, Qn, Serum55  L87-352 (mg/dL) Ft-Transglutaminase (tTG) IgG183  H0-5 (U/mL) - Negative 0 - 5 - Weak Positive 6 - 9 - Positive >9

Mine is definitely triggered by inflammation and stress! I do also have arthritis in my spine, but the pain is more in my pelvic area. Im sure i have other food intolerances or other autoimmune isues but the more I focus on it and see doctor after doctor, it just gets worse.  Best thing is get of Gluten! (I also avoid lactose). Try to limit stress and anything that causes inflammation in your body.

Good morning,   I got an email about replies to this post. Some of my doctors had blamed a slipped disc for the pain I had and that contributes, but after meeting with a gastroenterologist AGAIN and trying some lifestyle modifications, I found out I have IBS and can't tolerate corn or excessive fructose to any degree. Cutting out corn AFTER having cut out all gluten containing products was a real pain but I feel much better now!

So, I contacted Scott Adams, the author of that article and also the creator/admin of this website, and pointed out to him the need to clarify the information in the paragraph in question. He has now updated the paragraph and it is clear that the DGP-IGA does serve the purpose of circumventing the false negatives that IGA deficiencies can generate in the tTG-IGA antibody test.
