How Do You Avoid The Why Me Pity Party?

Hi all, I'm one of the many with multiple food intolerances that arose kinda unexpectedly. Eating out and avoiding gluten is easy these days. Eating out and avoiding gluten, corn, soy, dairy, tomatoes, and chocolate is difficult. Well, difficult is probably an understatement. Eating out is best avoided.

Our family activities used to include a few things that I can no longer do...some restaurants that we loved, cooking we did together, and even something like going to the zoo has become more complicated for me as I must have food that I can eat picnic style for myself. Or the aquarium. Orthe kids museum. Or anywhere. No more baking cookies together.

Honestly, sometimes I do just want to eat a pizza! (I won't of course, as the dough, sauce, and cheese will all gang up on me!). It is just part of the mourning, I guess, for what used to be. There is a new reality for me and any slip makes me feel sick, even an unintentional slip. It seems like when I have lots of cooking time, and I live in a happy little bubble then all is good. But any kind of group activities cause anxiety. Eat at someone else's house? Let me bring my own food. Or, we design a menu together and I cross my fingers there won't be a slip with something like a spice jar or whatever. And then I'm the different one with sick guts. And when I do get sick, depression is a real component.

Sometimes, especially when feeling sick, I feel more sorry for myself than I like. These feelings do go away but they are not staying away. I mean, some people have very real problems and when I look at mine I wouldn't trade, KWIM? So I'm looking for more ways to cope with my new reality without any pity parties. What do you do?

I raid my stash of peanut butter. :lol:

Eh, i understand ya somewhat. I can't do tomatos either and the smell sometimes... especially pizza...

In times like this, a nice big juicy apple, a big scoop of peanut butter, and a little honey help me over it. I also tell myself its just not worth it.

Yeah, I also like dates with apples. I'm OK in my own kitchen. And if I always ate alone or with my immediate family that's ok too.

It's more the convenience and the community aspect of food that I miss. And it makes me wonder why I am the canary in the coal mine.

I come to these forums and vent . I have even been known to stomp my feet and pout ( on occasion ) :P

I allow my self to grieve the loss of a way of life and then embrace my new healthy way of life. I revel in my new health and well being .

Let your self grieve the loss ,it is a true loss and needs to be mourned. Then recognize the warrior in you that has brought you this far and allow that to carry you on.

Celiacs (diagnosed or not ) are among the strongest people you will ever have the privilege to know .

I understand - we all have those days, and it's ok to have them, and admit them. But then we have to move on and find things to replace what we are missing. Like making vegan gluten free cookies together. :)

YES!

I'm totally OK with never again eating at McDs, or Taco Bell, etc. but I would love to be able to eat SOMEWHERE! (And avoid gluten, corn, soy, dairy, tomatoes, peppers, chocolate...)

In a moment of strength I decided to go ahead and make Toll House cookies with my kids, that I was not going to let stupid gluten intolerance interfere with family activities. And, of course, it happened. That moment when a tiny bit of batter splashed on the back of my hand and I instinctively ate it! ARGH! I had been so careful until that moment! Fortunately I did not get as sick as I was getting before. (But I do NOT see that as a sign that I can eat gluten. More like I got lucky in a round of Russian Roulette.)

Next batch of cookies was paleo. For some unknown reason they made me sick. I really don't know what happened, but the next morning I was curled up in pain and miserable. The kids didn't like them, nor my husband, so they got tossed. Sad. Do you have a go-to vegan gluten-free (corn and soy free) recipe that you could share?

I did that with almond butter. As soon as it went into my mouth, I realized my mistake. Spit it right out and rinsed my mouth. Thankfully no problems.

I just tell myself that everyone has problems to deal with. Some of us seemingly more than others.

I don't really miss any foods any more because I know how sick they make me. But... I do really miss the ease of the old days. Being able to eat something and not have to worry about what was in it.

( edit to add " sorry they are not vegan ** ) If you can tolerate peanut butter ,eggs and sugar you can have the BEST cookies ever!!

Original recipe makes 1 dozen

  • 1 cup peanut butter
  • 1 cup white sugar

  • 1 egg
  • Directions
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C).
  • Combine ingredients and drop by teaspoonfuls on cookie sheet. Bake for 8 minutes. Let cool. Recipe doesn't make very many, so you could double recipe as you desire.

Hey THANKS for the recipe! I'll have to try it. Egg is fine, fortunately.

I made the paleo cookies many days after the toll house were made. I ate a total of four cookies the first day and succumbed to the fetal position the next morning. About a week later I tried one cookie to see what would happen. Sick again, not as bad. I even tried one more time just to be sure. It is weird, though, because the ingredients should all be OK for me. Maybe the almond flour was too old? I just don't know anymore.

I don't have a particular recipe. I generally google and try. :)

Actually, if you can do eggs, it's fairly easy - find a regular recipe and replace the milk (if there is some) with a milk sub.

      I'm also a nurse, but one who has worked in chronic care, and to some extent, it is more satisfying to see patients through to a diagnosis (as opposed to working in the ED), but an accurate diagnosis does not occur not as often as it should! Your posting presents a lot of information. But a couple of things I can respond to. One, celiac disease is diagnosed by endoscopy and biopsy of the duodenum. So, pathology will need to weigh in. It's not diagnosed on gastroscopy. (At least, not as far as I know). Two, did you get blood tests for celiac disease? You will need to be eating gluten in order for those to be accurate. Three, where was the CT angiogram (of what)? I could go on and on, but thought I'd start there.

      Was a biopsy done when you had your gastroscopy? Concerning your anemia, are you B12 deficient? It's nearly impossible to get sufficient B12 if you are a vegetarian unless you take supplements.

      And I’m anaemic, however I’m also female and vegetarian. I had an iron trans a couple of years ago however it’s starting to dwindle and taking supplements doesn’t seem to work. I can’t seem to absorb it.

      Hi, I attended a neurologist appt last Tuesday, which I nearly cancelled, due to ongoing numbness and tingling in toes to mid foot. One of the first things he asked was ‘are you celiac’. I’m not. He thought all reflexes were ok but at the last minute decided on nerve conduction tests which were low normal. He was a little confused as he felt they should be better and tried a new set of probs, all the time, giving me multiple shocks which were not enjoyable lol. Anyway, he’s now ordered tests for myeloma, and all the vitaminy things that so many of you mention on here, also tests looking for autoimmune responses. I already have Hashimotos. Interestingly, to me, but maybe someone out there can relate or knows more than i do, although I was a nurse, but ED not ‘weird symptoms’  nurse. Anyway back to the interesting thing, I took duramine in 2013 to lose weight which caused a massive panic attack when I stopped taking it and half my hair fell out. I only took it for a week but it was horrible and I regret it. It triggered ongoing panic attacks which are horrendous. So I feel like I’m a bit crazy. Then in 2020 I had this sudden onset of horrible pain when trying to eat a cinnamon roll. It continued and I lost around 20 kgs. I had two gastroscopes and a colonoscopy and they were all normal. I scored a barium swallow and CT angiogram. All normal. The pain subsided a little but I was left with reflux and an awful feeling that I couldn’t get air when I ate some foods. This was not anxiety.  The anxiety was separate and I still maintain this. This was something to do with eating. It was like the air was thick but I wasn’t short of breath. I just had the sensation I was, then it triggered anxiety. Anyway, I had other weird things- couldn’t bend knees to shave legs in shower lol. Knees felt stiff and swollen but they weren’t. Knee WOUld swell up randomly but mri showed minimal issues. A bit of a meniscus degeneration but insignificant. Then the buzzing sensations in my head, the feeling like someone was stabbing me with something sharp. So now, I pre empted his tests, although I don’t think I’m celiac because it should have come up on gastroscopy, I’ve gone off gluten. Since Tuesday last week so 9 days. Since then I don’t appear to be as constipated, I realised I got through today without a nap and I’m not tired, maybe it’s just today and not related but I get very tired normally and sleep straight after work often, I can bend my knees and shave my legs lol, the buzzing vibrating has gone from my head, I had to call and ambulance as my heart decided we were off on a run, but we weren’t running and I’ve been a bit twitchy at bed time when trying to sleep, reflux is improving, I did get the weird suffocating feeling a bit when eating today but not as bad normall. Tingling and numbness still present and I felt like it moved up my legs a bit today but I’m a bit jittery. So I don’t know if it’s celiac disease or a gluten intolerance but I think, and it may be wishful thinking because my symptoms do make life a bit challenging, but maybe I’m feeling better. I don’t feel as cloudy. My thinking feels crisper. Like there’s no buzzing and I’m not fighting to break through the cloudiness now. I hope so much that this may help me feel a bit better moving forward. It would be a miracle as I really have struggled to work and parent and keep the house clean and I’m always anxious and exhausted.  If you get this far, please tell me if you you can relate to any of the above. Oh and tonsils out 5 years ago but before that antibiotics multiple times a year, sometimes intramuscular because they were so bad.  Op was meant to take 30 mins, it took 1.5 hours due to size of them.

      Im still not gaining weight I’m on a gluten free diet . And still having issues with constapation started priobiocs figured it would help been over two weeks . I guess it’s going to be a long road for me .
