Old Hag Syndrome / Sleep Paralysis

13 March 2012 - 06:03 PM

Someone just reminded me of something that used to happen to me before going gluten-free. It would be interesting to find out if other Celiacs have experienced this. My son who is also Celiac has also experienced it. I used to get episodes of what is called "Old Hag Syndrome". I am attaching a link that explains it. It is also called "Seep Paralysis". I just had the thought that maybe it was caused by Celiac because it has not happened to me since. It is a very scary situation where you wake up and cannot move a muscle - you hear and see and smell but cannot move. It feels like something or someone is holding you down and you try to yell out but can't. It only lasts a few seconds but it is very scary. Has anyone else experienced this syndrome?

Reaction ... Result Of Baking With Wheat Flour

28 January 2012 - 04:08 PM

In my 4 years since going gluten free I had only baked something (for my husband) with wheat flour one time. At that time I wore a mask and there was no problem. Last week he wanted a special dessert with wheat flour, so I figured I would make it but not wear a mask ... how could I get a reaction if I wasn't eating it...right? I was careful and the flour didn't seem to be flying around so I thought I was safe. The next day I had diarrhea for the whole morning. I was racking my brain trying to figure out where I had contacted gluten. Finally I realized that it must have been from inhaling some of the flour particles although at the time I didn't think there was a problem.

No more gluten baking for me, my husband will have to buy his desserts or make them himself or eat my gluten free goodies. I have started using my gluten free all-purpose flour blend when making my old recipes and they have all been coming out perfectly.

Skin Tags ... From Celiac?

28 January 2012 - 03:44 PM

I have had skin tags as long as I can remember. I just realized that since I went gluten free 4 years ago no new skin tags have appeared. Is it possible that it is another symptom of Celiac? Has any one else noticed a decrease in skin tags since going gluten free?

Equate Glucosamine & Chondroitin With Msm Has Gluten

21 January 2012 - 04:14 PM

For those of you who take Glucosamine please beware. Just before Christmas I had a gluten reaction and couldn't figure out what I had eaten that had gluten. At first I had just slight nausea so I thought maybe it was from my sensitivity to lactose. When it got worse and the diarrhea started I knew it had to be gluten. Then I remembered buying Equate Glucosamine & Chondroitin with MSM from Walmart. I had been taking them for about 3 weeks. The list of ingredients did not show gluten and I bought them because they were cheaper than my regular brand which is clearly marked Gluten-Free. I stopped taking it right away and my symptoms went away. I contacted Walmart and after about 2 weeks of emails and phone calls they finally got back to me that there is gluten in the product. So I learned the hard way that it doesn't pay to buy a product because it is cheaper if it isn't clearly labeled Gluten-Free. :(
