I sit on my couch admiring the picturesque Colorado scene occurring outside my window: snow is falling in a powdery white mist creating a sense of wonder and festivity all at once. Creating an atmosphere rich in thought, there are two things I consider: (1) my toddler will wake up at any minute, thus ending my viewing pleasures and (2) the blogging world is scary. I’ve never blogged before. To be honest, I paid blogging no attention until a few days ago. But, I have been going through an extraordinary experience and I feel that this experience is somewhat unique. I want to share this experience, and the things learned from it, with the rest of the world. So, I embark on the blogging experience with expectations that are summarized with adjectives similar to the snowstorm: wondrous and festive.
My experience? My daughter, Ava, has been diagnosed with Celiac Disease. But, she differs from most Celiacs because she is only 17 months old.
Our prayers were answered with a diagnosis in early 2010, when Ava was 15 months old. The diagnosis was welcomed with open arms, as we had spent months helplessly watching our infant child deteriorate before our eyes (more on this later). Never did we imagine that something as simple as a dietary change could solve our problems. But, behold…. after just a few days of gluten-free eating, our child has blossomed into a healthy and opinionated toddler!
And this is where the adventure begins.
Ava suffered just long enough before her diagnosis to teach her that food hurts her. So her relationship with food is rocky, at best. To get a sense of our mealtime experience, combine the dynamics of a toddler with the experiences of a Celiac and remove logical thinking. Additionally, meal preparation is becoming a stressful event as I am still learning how to create a gluten-free kitchen and bake gluten-free meals.
Thus, Adventures in Gluten-Free Toddling is born. My goals are to document my experiences as well as digest all the available gluten-free information in an organized way. And, hopefully other gluten-free parents will benefit from my insights (and more likely my fumbles).
The snow is beginning the taper off, and I hear the sweet squeaks that could only come from a beloved little girl in her crib. However, I feel better about the blogging world because I have now entered it, and survived.
