I have a cousin who likes to call me a freak because of my wheat allergy. I wonder if she would call a person with a cat or dog allergy a freak??? All other allegies are so readily accepted without question or scrutiny. But wheat is a whole different matter. It is totally questioned and scrutinized. Sadly, all I have to do is whip out my epi-pens and they become (scared)believers. Scared because I teach them how to use my epi-pen "just in case" and it SCARES the crap out of them! However, I want the people around me to know how to use it, it is my best defense against death by anaphylactic shock.

I really don't understand why people can't look at it like other serious allergies. Peanuts get a lot of attention; everyone instantly puts away anything containing peanuts with little or no complaint when asked to by someone with a serious allergy. Peanut, animal, medication-allergies rarely get the eye roll, so why gluten?

Lol! :lol: I had the same experience the other day at the Udi's area in the frozen section. Another person actually wanted some too! :P

(my dog also loves Chex and it's cute to hear her crunch them)

So does mine. Especially the honey variety. Whenever I sit down with a bowl she puts her head in my lap and waits for one to fall.

Everyone expects us to be hermits. "Whoa. You can shop at a regular grocery store??" "You can walk into Applebee's with us??" Well, yeah. once I talk the dog into bringing me the key and busting me out of my cell in the dungeon, I can do just about anything.

I went to Cub yesterday to grab a couple loaves of Udi's and some salsa (I decided the Super Bowl is a good time to exploit my fructose limits). Anyway, that was the first time I've had company in the gluten free aisle. Okay, so there were only two other people (and one was a delivery guy), but that frozen section is usually empty no matter how busy the rest of the store is.

So as we helped each other find the recently rearranged items (with me saying "I just want a loaf of bread! Where is it?!") a couple walks by the end of the aisle and the woman starts to turn in but has to dance around the delivery guy. Her husband runs into her and I hear him say, "Wow. People. So you Celiacs really do celebrate the Super Bowl too, huh?" We all giggle-- even the delivery guy-- and the woman says "Yeah, yeah, you just go around and get your meat. I'll meet up with you at the steaks." "Okay, don't have too much fun in this aisle."

Yes, sir. We do celebrate the Super Bowl. Chips and salsa. 1-2-3 Gluten Free brownies with So Delicious coconut ice cream. Udi's and Rudi's. Kettlecorn. Life is good.

My talking about gluten-intolerance hasn't helped others with potential gluten problems, as far as I know, but I have gotten quite a few comments about lifestyle changes in general.

My sister was the first. She'd been considering becoming vegetarian for years and had tried it for a few weeks at a time. When I got rid of gluten and told her I was feeling better she went all in. I have been gluten-free and she meat-free since April of 2010. She does most of her shopping at co-ops or Trader Joe's and has also been reading labels almost as carefully as I do; if an ingredient doesn't have to be there, she doesn't buy the product.

Some of my friends who have been trying to eat healthier for years, but not quite succeeding, are also trying harder. I often hear "Wow, if you can give up eating all that stuff, I can certainly skip dessert occasionally or stop buying processed food whenever it's on sale." College life is a big barrier to a healthy lifestyle, but once I assure them that I do in fact still eat food, they see that changes can be easily made.

I keep a little spiral bound notebook in my desk drawer and whenever I get back to my room I make a note of anything I've eaten since the last chance I had to pull it out. I rarely write the exact time of consumption; instead, I'll leave spaces indicating meal groupings and general time of day. If I don't have a snack between lunch and a late supper, I'll skip down to the last few lines of the page. I've found that those little spirals are just the right size to log one day per page. If I notice any odd symptoms, I write them in red ink and draw lines connecting them to any likely food causes. In those post-glutening days I'll write a D or C at the top of the page so I can keep track of how severe that particular cycle of recovery is. I've also found it helpful to note periods, different activities especially anything abnormally stressful (like finals weeks or holidays), restaurant name and location (bacon and eggs from Perkins affect me differently depending on which of the three nearby locations I go to). Supplements usually make it onto the page and if I have to pull out the Pepto I'll note which food it followed.

It takes practice, but eventually you'll find the system that works well for you. It can turn into a fine science.

#671579 Gluten And Soy Free Food? Help!

I'm a college student living in a dorm too so I understand your frustration. Once I found a nice collection of gluten-free replacement foods, the plan turned upside down again when I had to go soy free. Now I also avoid dairy and large amounts of sugar and high fructose foods.

The basics I always keep on hand are rice cakes and applesauce (my suggestion is to skip the spoon; add some cinnamon to the applesauce-- I refill a little container from home-- and dip the cakes), rice, oatmeal, potatoes (usually shrink wrapped and microwave ready), tuna and lemonaisse (a gluten and soy free mayo), some lunch meat, bread and eggs. If I have time to cook a real breakfast, I'll prep some eggs for an omelet but fill it only with rice and sometimes meat or veggies if I have them. There are plenty of gluten and soy free cereals out there; I stopped buying them to avoid unnecessary sugar, but it is good to have the option. I pick up my own tortilla chips and salsa if there's a movie night or party coming. When I go home, we cook up some meat and roasted veggies to add to my rice. If I had a freezer in my room there would be two weeks worth of home-cooked meals inside B)

It's also a good idea to find a restaurant or two where you can at least eat something, if not a whole meal. I have a Noodles & Co. right off campus (all I can have is the pad thai, but thankfully that's one of my favorites) and a Chipotle. Unfortunately, a lot of my friends would rather go to McDonald's or get half-price apps at Applebee's so my social life has been pretty quiet, but on the occasions when they let me pick it can feel like old times.

If you're a pad thai fan, my sister has a great vegetarian, gluten and soy free recipe that's pretty simple and has gotten popular at home. I have it around here somewhere; I'll post that along with a few others later. Splurge occasionally and invite your friends to a meal. College students are always ready for food that didn't come from the caf and there are plenty of dishes that don't scream "gluten and soy free" to the fast-food goers.

Thanks for these ideas! I can do without a lot of stuff, but I must have chocolate!

There's a vending machine on my floor in the dorm and the only thing I can safely eat is the Fritos (and I'm even trying to avoid those now). When its stock dwindles, some girls start leaving notes on the glass for the suppliers with requests for their favorites usually resulting in at least two full dispensers of that item. I have been incredibly tempted to leave notes for bizarre gluten-free food.

One of these days it's going to happen... Cookies & Cream? Carmello? No, give us 80+% Ghiradelli or Boom Choco Boom or Xochitl tortilla chips. Maybe individually packaged slices of Udi's? Rice noodles? I despise vending machines now. Hmm... Apparently I'm hungry.

I agree with Melinda: my first few months gluten-free were like my first few periods ever. I've been gluten-free since April 2010 (wow, ten months already?!?... or should I say, "Only ten months?!?"). Anyway... My periods have gotten less painful, but I start getting cramps at least a week before (pre-gluten-free, I never got them until the day of) but they're not too severe. Also, I have to cut back to my simple recovery diet about a week before (I posted a few weeks ago about what happens if I don't)-- rice, bread, low-fructose fruits-- until my period ends.
Actually, it's probably about time to start that...

Hang in there!!

P.S. I never even thought to check fem products for gluten :unsure: But I've made it this long, so apparently it's not a problem for me.

That sounds HEAVENLY. I am a choco-holic, but I'm lactose intolerant and just got diagnosed with reactive hypoglycemia. Anyone know what kind of chocolate (boar :lol: ) that I could get my hands on? I found a bar in the organic section of Kroger - gluten-free, LF, low sugar. But it tastes like...chocolate chalk.

Before I stopped eating them because of the sugar I ate Enjoy Life's "Boom Choco Boom" bars. They make a milk chocolate and dark chocolate, both free of the major allergens (i.e. gluten, soy, dairy...). Even if you were a milk chocolate fan, I'd suggest the dark; the milk didn't have much flavor.

I saw that someone mentioned Ghiradelli. I try to avoid chocolate altogether but when I really need some I eat that. The darker it is, the fewer ingredients you have to worry about. Be aware that different brands use different formulas: I found one that wasn't safe for me unless I went 85% or above. I think Ghiradelli's the safest option short of chewing raw cocoa beans.

Sounds like me and corn chips. I went through at least half a bag of Xochitl Mexican style tortilla chips on my last road trip home.

If I hadn't learned that Frito's are on the safe-list (gluten-free and soy free) I would have lost more than 20 pounds over the summer.

Hi everyone,

I am new to the forum-as I have only been gluten free (dairy free, refined sugar free) for the last three months. My naturopathic just diagnosed me with leaky gut syndrome based on all my symptoms I shared. Many of my symptoms have gone away. My hair however is still falling out... I am thinking it may be due to vitamin deficiency. Has anyone else had issues with this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the forum! I've been gluten free since April and by summer I had also cut out soy and dairy. More recently I started watching and limiting my processed sugar and fructose intake. I'm down 40 pounds since April (first 20 was because of the positive diet change, the last 20 is likely the result of malnutrition and leaky gut) and after 2 MRIs, a pill cam, upper and lower endoscopy and numerous blood tests my GIs (I end up with a different one every time I go) have made the enlightening diagnosis of IBS. I use italics to indicate the massive amount of sarcasm with which I typed that line.

My hair is coming out in clumps right from the root. I've never been one to put much effort into my hair so losing it due to hair binders and the like is a daily event, but now it's coming out straight from the root. More recently, I've noticed that my teeth and gums feel weak. I tried a multi-vitamin in the spring and always took it at night thinking I'd sleep through any side effects but I woke up nauseous every morning so I dropped that and am now taking my supplements as individual pills-- B12, Vit C, iron, Calcium with Vit D.

There have been a few other topic posts recently about hair. Just type it into the search bar. There were some good tips, but I can't recall them exactly now. I know I'm not absorbing green or red veggies or fats (sometimes buttering just one slice of toast instead of two can make a noticeable difference) so picking up a bottle of Vit A for my teeth is on my to-do list.

Chicken of the Sea has tuna canned with olive oil now. Not everyone has it, but having some on hand is worth the search and it's better than their water-packed cans... Those are too dry for me.

Ah, yes, Chipotle. :) I also eat a lot of Noodles & Co. Pad Thai is the only dish that is also soy-free when ordered straight from the menu.
