About Me
Recent updates, November 2010:
Tested positive for the HLA DQ2 gene, making my Celiac diagnosis almost certain.
IgA levels are still high despite following a strict gluten free diet for the last 6 months. Unknown whether I am continuing to consume gluten and/or have other food intolerances.
I got diagnosed with Celiac Disease on May 4, 2010. As an avid baker, this came as a particularly unpleasant surprise. For years I've been suffering from fatigue, poor sleep, restless legs, facial congestion (pollen allergies), acne, acid reflux and some weight loss (although not an alarming amount, and I like my weight now, ha ha).
I don't really have the stomach problems that many associate with Celiac, although IBS runs in my family and I'm suspect that some of my other family members may have it.
I currently live in Champaign, Illinois (about 2 hours south of Chicago) and work at an alterations store. As I'm relatively new to celiac disease, I'm trying to gather more information, do more research about my new diet and meet others who have this condition. I'm especially interested in meeting people who live nearby Champaign. Other than the internet, I feel quite alone right now with this condition and feel somewhat overwhelmed and alienated. I hope to meet new people, gather more information, get new recipes and more!

Montreal And Quebec City
10 May 2012 - 04:53 PM
I will be going to Montreal and Quebec City for the first time this August. Does anyone have any suggestions as to restaurants/cafes in either city that do gluten-free? I have Celiac Disease and am quite sensitive to gluten. Also, are there any grocery stores or other food places you suggest? Any other tips?
Today Show Calls Celiac A "trendy" Disease
10 May 2012 - 04:46 PM
I'm surprised I haven't found anything here yet on the latest garbage said on the Today Show. Read this blog post by Gluten Dude: http://glutendude.co...sease-is-trend/
Apparently a Dr. Keri Peterson said Celiac Disease was a "trendy disease" and "easy to manage." Am I the only one who is outraged here? This is ridiculous!

Target's Market Pantry Brand
20 March 2012 - 03:44 PM
I've been shopping at Target a number of times and notice that they have their own brand, Market Pantry. But I haven't bought anything of that brand because there is no indication as to whether it's gluten-free. Does anyone know? In other words, are there cross-contamination issues?
Frustrated And Alarmed About Weight Gain
18 March 2012 - 05:43 PM
I've been on the gluten-free diet for nearly 2 years now. When I was finally diagnosed with Celiac Disease 2 years ago, I had been losing a lot of weight and people were getting concerned. Since going on the gluten-free diet, I first gained weight, then lost it (and went through a long period where I was very sick) and have since gained it all back plus extra. I've gained about 5-6 pounds from my ideal weight since December. Pants are beginning to not fit. Suddenly, for the first time in 12 years, I am worrying about gaining weight. I've been so used to eating as much as I wanted and not gaining anything (in fact losing weight) that now I'm beginning to panic. I know this probably sounds trivial to some of your experiences, but I'm just so afraid I'll keep gaining weight. For the last few weeks, I've been walking a lot more and trying to exercise more and also work on my diet. I'm addicted to carbs and sweets and I know that isn't healthy. However, I've never had a problem with eating too much. I'm just worried because I've started exercising a lot more and watching my diet more but haven't lost any weight. Anyway, I'm just venting but I'm really afraid about continuing to gain weight.
"celiac's" Disease?
28 February 2012 - 10:15 AM
I often notice people referring to Celiac Disease as "Celiac's Disease." Is this incorrect? As far as I know, the term "Celiac" is a medical condition, not the name of a person as some diseases are called (for example Parkinson's disease). So why then do so many people say "Celiac's"? Is it just pure ignorance? I'm not sure if this is the correct thread to post this in, but I'm not sure where else I would post such a question.
