I have Lupus too.  I personally have not been able to tolerate the Plaqunil, but I have a long history of not being able to tolerate meds.  If you have a difficult time tolerating it, I read on the Lupus Foundation of America's forum that some people cut the dose in half at first, always take it with meals, then graduate up to the 200 mg. per day.

The first time I went to a family holiday, I brought my own food, along with a dish to share.  The 2nd and 3rd times, I ate food I thought would be safe because everyone was pretty tuned into the program.  I was horridly sick for a week after the 2nd and 3rd holiday family events. 

 

I thought my family would be appalled by my bringing my own food, but even though they teased me a little bit on the first holiday event, I'd take getting teased over getting gluttened any day of the year. 

 

It's about you being there, not about the food.  It really is, no matter what.

Thanks, you guys. It helps to have you all here. I really am doing better than I was, but some days...I just don't got it, you know? I try so hard and work so hard to keep my head up and for the most part I am succeeding. But today, it just fell apart. And I get so scared. This thing scares me so much. I am so afraid of missing something, that I will suddenly get worse and not know why and have to go through the hell with doctors that I went through in the first half of this year. It really messes with my head sometimes.

 

And I am pissed that I had to miss my sewing class tonight. I love my sewing classes, they are important to me. But I was feeling so not good (probably from the flu shot) that I just did not think it was a good idea to go. And that just sucks.

 

I took a bath, drank tea and my sweetheart hugged my while I cried, then rubbed my feet and we watched a show together. He's a treasure.

At  end of the day, your time spent with your sweetheart was way more important than your sewing class IMHO.  There's always next week...

I personally don't have a problem D wise with unpeeled zucchini or vodka, but not everyone every one is the same.  Good luck.

Oh boy, I can relate.

 

My heritage is dutch too, and I cracked up when you described the "heart attack on the plate".    However, my family was very supportive about what I could and couldn't eat and didn't try to force feed me. 

 

I don't know if this will help or not, but most of the restaurants my family frequented almost always had baked potatoes or sweet potatoes.  I'd order one uncut, skin on.  (Advice I learned here on the forum, not my original idea.)    Even if you just play with the potato, your family will perhaps be more comfortable.   I never got zapped by actually eating them.

#881070 Oven Baked French Fries

I have to share this, I've tried for months to perfect homemade French fries and after two meals of perfect fries,,, here's how you do it.  These don't come out soggy, burnt or yucky.  They're delicious.

 

Pre-preparation: 

 

Place oven racks at next to the lowest and next to the top of the oven.  Line 2 cookie sheets with parchment paper.

 

Ingredients

 

Scrubbed Idaho (or other large spud, including yams)

Salt and other seasoning to taste.

 

Slice the potatoes into French fries the size you like them.  Toss them into a bowl of cool water.  Rinse well, then let them soak in cool water while you heat the oven to 415 degrees.  Drain them well, pat them dry with paper towels, distribute on the 2 cookie sheets, drizzle with olive oil and pop into the oven.

 

Bake 15 minutes, rearrange the cookie sheets, bake another 15 minutes, and you will have some very, very good French fries.

 

2 notes:  I've never used more than 3 potatoes, and if you use sweet potatoes, you'll get a good work out slicing, but they're really good!  3 spuds make enough to serve 5 people as a side, or 2 people and a hungry dog as a main course.

The fridge is full of goods all with Gluten, but you're starving and you haven't eaten all day.
No shops are open

Seems to be my downfall alot. My general decision is given in to hunger pains and pray for a better tomorrow (it never comes)

 
My next decision would be to make a resolution to plan more.
 
You can freeze cooked rice in Sandwich bags and have cans of black or red beans in the pantry.  If you make gluten-free pasta, it's just as easy to make a whole bag of it as it is to make a small portion, then freeze single portion sizes.  Same with soups or chili or practically anything.  
 
Then you have to ask yourself a day or 2 in advance what you are going to eat the next couple of days, and move stuff from the freezer to the refrigerator.  
 
The staples I always keep are cheese, milk, tomato sauce, salsa, rice cakes,  corn or rice chips, peanut butter, eggs, various canned beans, frozen and canned fish,  romaine lettuce and root vegetables.
 
Even if you don't feel inspired to make something delicious, you can have something in your refrigerator or pantry to eat safely and avoid hunger pains.

"I don't know if you saw the movie "Lorenzo's Oil".   I'm dealing with a genetic disease that is infinitely better than the rare genetic disease Lorenzo had, or thousands of other inherited or autoimmune diseases.  

 

Celiacs  control their disease by what they eat, by thinking about what they stick in their mouth, and by religiously checking every single ingredient on every box, bag, can they buy at the grocery store.

 

For that, I'm thankful.  Celiac Disease makes me weird to you, because I won't eat at parties or events, but I'm not crippled, just different."

I know this is seriously off topic, sorry a lot.

 

  I had the same thing  happen at work too!  Co-workers harped constantly about me being too thin! Yada yada.

 

I finally went to the biggest gossip (and one of the most overweight) people in the office in confidence.  I told her I was sick of people commenting about me being underweight. 

 

"When I had a fat A..., nobody said a word.  Don't tell anyone, but it's really bothering me that everybody picks on me now that I've lost weight."

 

Honestly, that worked like majic overnight.  Poof!

Hi Alan,

Even though you might feel like it's a bummer that the initial results came back positive for celiac, remember that it's not necessarily a bummer. It could be an answer vs. a problem.

You can control the disease by what you stick in your mouth, that's a good thing!

Two months is a long time to wait for the endoscopy, but you've already endured 3 years of agony. 2 months isn't that long in comparison, right?

It would be good to get your folks tested too. That gene came from someone on the family tree. In the meantime, I hope you're packing protein snacks to get you through the day, like nuts or sunflower seeds. Over the point of being redundant, keep consuming gluten.

He's the roommate formerly known as boyfriend, significant other for 12 years. Aak! Common law...Aak!

Last night I told him he is just "other" now.

Today he told me I can just call him SUD for Suck Up Danny.

Here's the part that makes me realize that he'll never, ever get it.

He explained that since he knows I can have hamburger, he thought salmon burger would be okay. I questioned him like Perry Mason: "Did you ask the guys at the fish counter if it was gluten-free?" "Did you read the label?" "Do you realize I bought you peepers so you can read the labels?" His answer was "no" on all accounts except the 3rd.

I concluded with that and asked him to please use the scratched non-stick pan I threw away 2 plus years ago for cooking it. (He retrieved it.) Naaaa....he used our grill.

Anyway, back to original topic, I served very spicy Indian Chicken tonight with lots of veggies. SUD doesn't care for spicy food, Indian food or veggies. I cooked the veggies in the sauce. I made his head sweat. I gluten-free curried him!

Over dinner, I inquired if the chicken was better than the salmon burgers or loaf. He said it was. (Maybe a SUD statement.) I asked if it had ever dawned on him that groceriy stores usually use fish or meat they're ready to throw out for loaves and burgers.\\


Maybe I'll stop tormenting him tomorrow.

He just admitted that he cooked the salmon on our dedicated gluten-free gas grill. (I had eggs.)

Come on down girl's it's time to put a whuppin' on him. Bring on the pirates.

(He swore he'd scrub it tomorrow ...)

All I asked was if he could pick up some fish. We live in Florida!

In case anybody's wondering, he is, so far, unscathed, living breathing.

Take a hot soak in the tub, drink lots of liquids (especially peppermint tea), listen to music, read, play stupid computer games, exercise, wish I could play banjo. Sometimes I color designs with colored pencils or research weird things on a search engine, like how to make hand sewn curtains. I have little intenton of making curtains, but it was amazing to see the results.

Anything to get my mind off of "it" and on to what's next.
