16 August 2010 - 10:08 AM

Hi all! I just made another trip to NYC last week and have compiled a list of gluten-free eating options and tips for those in my local Indy group. If you would like to receive this list (in a more user friendly format - please send me an e-mail. However, I have also pasted the info below. Hope this is helpful to some of you! If you have questions, please e-mail as I don't log onto the forum very often anymore! -Jen

Jen H’s Guide to gluten-free Eating in NYC

In my opinion, NYC is handsdown the best city in the US for eating gluten-free. There are too many places to list – but here are some of my favorites or the most popular. I have not listed the chains that are available throughout the city, i.e. Chipotle etc. Restaurants are located all over the city and its not too difficult to find one close by. One tip is to make a google map with pins marking the places you are interested in – that way you can determine which are closest at a glance, based on your plans for the day. There is also a Whole Foods and other markets if you need to stock up in the city.

Places I’ve been:
• Hampton Chutney Company: www.hamptonchutney.com 464 Amsterdam Avenue | 212-362-5050 (2nd location as well)
o Featured items are dosas – similar to HUGE wraps made with rice/lentils and filled with your choice of meat, veggies or a variety of amazing chutneys.
• Risotteria: http://www.risotteria.com/ 270 Bleecker Street | 212.924.6664
o The number ONE place in the city – almost the whole menu is gluten-free. Pizza, pasta, paninis, a huge selection of desserts, breadsticks, 5 gluten-free beers. It is always packed.
• Friedman’s: http://www.friedmans...e=menu_delivery 75 Ninth St | 212.243.7500
o One of our favorites from this last trip. A charming diner/café in the Chelsea Market (which is a unique shopping/eating area). You can get almost anything here gluten-free – fried chicken, sandwiches, fresh fries etc!
• Nizza: http://www.nizzanyc.com/ 630 9th Ave | 212.956.1800
o Great “fast” in and out type pizza place. They had a selection of 4 gluten-free pizzas ready to purchase by the slice, and soy cheese is an option. They also have several fresh gluten-free cakes by the slice and a huge selection of packaged desserts by My Dad’s Cookies – which were delicious!
• Peter’s: 1606 1st Ave | 212.734.9600
o HUGE lunch/breakfast menu ranging from gluten-free sandwiches to pancakes.
• BabyCakesNYC: www.babycakesnyc.com 248 Broome Street | 212.677.5047
o A staple in NYC probably all of you have heard of. I didn’t make it last year, but on my trip before they were still using some spelt in their kitchen, but 90% of everything was gluten-free and vegan, and they were dedicated about preventing contamination. This place has vintage/diner character like no other. All baked goods and desserts with some beverages and a few seats inside to sit and eat.
• Mozarrelli’s: http://www.mozzarellis.com/ 38 E 23rd St
o Nice moderate Italian restaurant with indoor/sidewalk seating. They have a variety of gluten-free dishes, including pasta and pizza.
• Bloom’s: http://www.bloomsnewyorkdeli.com 350 Lexington Ave | 212.922.3684
o Blooms is a classic NYC deli. They have a large menu for breakfast and lunch. Their “hashbrowns” are gluten-free fries that come with breakfast omelettes etc. They have toast and a decent range of other gluten-free items as well.
• Bistango: http://bistangonyc.com/ 415 3rd Ave | 212.725.8484
o Another nice, slightly dressy Italian restaurant offering gluten-free pasta, ravioli, pizza, desserts and beer.
• Angelica: http://www.angelicakitchen.com/ 300 E 12th St | 212.228.2909
o I went to this vegan café on my last NYC trip – they have a variety of options and I was accompanied by two firefighters who found the vegan food very satisfying!

Didn’t make it to these eateries, but they are also very popular:
Rice: http://www.riceny.co...es.php?pageid=1 292 Elizabeth Street |212.226.5775 (rice based dishes from Indian to Thai to BBQ)
Candle 79: http://www.candlecafe.com/ 1307 3rd St | 212.472.0970 (vegan/vegetarian)
Tu-Lus Bakery: http://tu-lusbakery.com/ 338 East 11th Street | 212. 777.2227 (entirely gluten-free bakery)
