Sciatic Nerve Pain

Last week, I bought a "gluten-free" chicken sausage out of a full service meatcase. The next day, I was glutened beyond belief! Low and behold, I dug through the garbage and found the parchment paper wrapper... and there were bread crumbs in it. Shortly thereafter, I got Sciatic Nerve pain from my glute all the way down to my toe. It progressively got worse over the past 5 days. In fact, I just came from the doctor (it was THAT bad)

One of my near and dear friends (also a Celiac) just called me and asked how I was doing. When I "fessed up" about my ailment, he said that when he gets glutened he immediately gets sciatic issues that lasts for a week.

Does this happen to any of you? In the past, I just had the usually gluten symptoms (diarrhea, fatigue, etc.) NEVER pain. And, this is the most pain I have ever had in my life.

Lactose Free Protein Shake?

Luckily, I only have a problem with gluten. But, my eye doctor (recently diagnosed as gluten intolerant) is also lactose intolerant.

Any lactose AND gluten intolerants who can give me a recommendation to pass on?

Carnival Cruise Bends Over Backwards For Celiacs

I've sailed with Carnival plenty of times since graduating from college, but this was my first time as a fully diagnosed Celiac. All I can say is WOW!!!

I met with the maître d’ shortly after boarding the ship and they immediately started to lay out all of their gluten free options. They even baked gluten free bread just for me for any meal. The waiters subsequently knew me by name and would bring their passenger specific gluten free menu to the table. There were at least 12 gluten free items that I haven't had in the nearly 3 years that I have been diagnosed.

But things actually got better! There was an up charge for an event called "The Chef's Table". You got to take a behind the scenes look at the galley by the Executive Chef of the whole ship. One of my 12 table mates even prepared one of the desserts in the galley itself (the event was limited to only 12 people). After our tour, we were seated in their library and at least 7 chefs brought out each course and served us individually. And then EACH course was accompanied by my own gluten free version of the appetizers, soups, entrees, desserts, etc. And they looked SO proud to have helped a Celiac.

I was absolutely amazed at their level of knowledge. I most certainly will be writing a letter to their corporate offices about their ability to cater to the gluten intolerant passenger.

Coffee Causing Gluten Like Symptoms

Anybody else have problems with coffee? Causing diuretic type issues?

I had some issues this past week, that seemed like the old gluten days and I have a sneaking suspicion that it might be coffee.

I have since cut out the coffee and am sticking with just green tea.

Anybody else have these issue?

Summer Salads (Gluten Free Of Course)

The thermometer went over 70 degrees yesterday, so I had summer salad on my mind. This is SO easy to make and extremely delicious. Give it a try!

Watermelon, Feta, and Mint Salad
adapted from Bon Appétit

* 8 cups 3/4-inch cubes seedless watermelon
* 7-ounce package feta cheese, crumbled
* a handful of chopped fresh mint for garnish

Toss watermelon and feta together on a platter. Drizzle with balsamic glaze and sprinkle with pepper (to taste) and mint.
