#858818 Intolerances And Blood Sugar Issues , A Connection Beyond Diabetes?

Posted by a1956chill on 16 March 2013 - 03:37 AM

Intolerances and blood sugar issues ,, a connection ??

Recently I was diagnosed with reactive hypoglycemia. I have been tracking my blood sugar levels for awhile now.

Interesting ( to me anyway :) ) is how my blood sugar levels reacts to different  foods. In particular how my blood sugar levels reacted to foods that I had been  questioning ( wither or not  I was  intolerant  ).

I have been grain free except for rice for quite awhile . I had been questioning rice before  I started tracking my blood sugar levels . Once testing my blood sugar levels I found that rice was sending my blood sugar off the charts ( over 200) even when eaten in very small amounts and eaten with a protein .  It was when I tested dairy that I began to wonder ( dairy sent my blood sugar levels threw the floor , into the 40-50's  )

Peanut butter was another food I had been questioning ( my blood sugar levels were all over the place when eating peanut butter)

Since eliminating rice, dairy  :( and peanut butter  my blood sugar levels have been stable .

, I am currently grain, refined sugar/artificial sweetener  ,dairy free ,along with gluten and soy free( among others   ), I eat  frequently and am strict about eating a protein when ever I eat a carb  ,   so those could be  the reasons my levels are currently  stable but I wonder ,,,,,,,,,,

So I am asking these knowledgeable forums,,,

Could there be a connection  between intolerances and blood sugar issues ??

#855487 Are You Beyond Your Past Intolerances? Needed Answers For How To.

Posted by a1956chill on 23 February 2013 - 06:47 AM

I have a concern that  eliminating food could be conterproductive..  Someone might get malnourished as a result.  That is why I was wondering if anyone recovered when they had very few things left in their diet.  The whole thread has been interesting for me, though.  I was intolerant to some degree to most things I was eating.  Rather then just eat the ones Ihat I had left, I began a rotational diet.  I was puzzling which way to go, to take out every food that I had antibodies for, or the rotational diet.  The rotational diet has done well.  I didn't have  an IgE reaction to anything, so that is why I was allowed to eat all of the foods.  If a person has an allergic reaction, they would not have it in their rotation.

Any thoughts in these directions I would appreciate.

The malnourishment I suffer before my elimination diet was killing me. So eating foods that my body could  actually absorb ,, even though very limited in my selection ,, saved my life .

Removing those foods I was intolerant  of allowed my body to utilizes the foods it could actually absorb and allowed my body   to heal so that I could eventually add some foods back into my diet

I found going organic resolved a lot of my issues . Meaning that it was the pesticides  ,waxes  ,additives and fertilizers  I was reacting to rater then the food its self .

Buying local organic fresh foods has made alot of foods tolerable.  Winter is tough but we deal :)

** just to add ** certain foods are off my consumable list permanently,,, meaning even if  organic  they are  NOT something my body tolerates .   Soy,Gluten,Sugar/Artificial sweeteners  and grains are OUT of my diet .

#854164 Do People With Celiac Absorb Sugar?

Posted by a1956chill on 16 February 2013 - 05:15 AM

I agree.  I have several doctors working with me on this.  I do feel that I am in control, though.  I am ultimatly accountable for taking care of my own health.  I would not use drugs or herbs without being advised.  My doctors would be supportive of testing at home.  It is a good way to see what is happening with the blood sugar.

While I agree with kareng that diabetes is a very serious medical condition ,,, home testing ( with reporting the results  to your doctor )is IMHO the best way to be aware of what is happening with your blood sugar levels  .Many diabetics may have been able to ( at least ) delay  diabetes IF they had been aware earlier that there may be an issue and  they could  have worked on  improving their diet.

Taking control of your own health is something that each of us NEEDS to do. Contrary to what many doctors believe,, Doctors are not gods .They are human beings that are trained to save our lives ,,   unfortunately  most   are not trained not improve the quality of life :( .

( for them ) I am not a priority because celiacs and its complications will not kill me immediately,,it will take a long time for the complications of celiacs to kill me .

I WILL be in control of my medical treatments and ( as you said) I alone am accountable for my health.

I have been gluten free for over 3 years , soy free over 2 years. I has taken me a very long time to identify  all my intolerances.

I fought very very hard to keep corn ( that did not work out so well   I am grain free ( with the exception of rice , which I limit )  Xanthum gum is totally  of limits   . Legumes and nuts I rotate in/out of my diet .Potatoes are not happening for me but now  I can   rotate tomatoes and peppers  in /out of my diet.I have a lot of foods that I still rotate in/out of my diet .

The key to getting "past" your intolerances? I would think it would be identifying them. Then eliminating them to allow your body to heal, then  reintroducing them ( one at a time)  to judge your reaction to see if it is now something your body can tolerate.

Not to be a downer but, I do not expect to " get beyond"   most of my intolerances. I was undiagnosed for an extremely long time. There was a lot of damage . I have A LOT of intolerances. Most of them are here to stay.I live with that  every day and I am OK with that because for the first time ( probably ever in my life ) I am healthy :D  And I am good with that :D

I did get dairy and eggs back   :D  ( two biggies to me :D  )

#846328 Type Of Doctor

Posted by a1956chill on 03 January 2013 - 01:42 AM

a derm who knows what the heck they're doing.

yep, unfortunately rarer than one would imagine

I would expand on that by saying  : the most important doctor a celiac ( especially if  undiagnosed ) can have is a doctor that will leave his ego at the door and will actually pay attention  to  what you say .

#840439 Liver Problems In Celiac

Posted by a1956chill on 02 December 2012 - 12:24 AM

I also have liver issues . I was diagnosed with gilbert's disease becasue of  elevated level of unconjugated bilirubins. My liver enzyme levels were also all over the place. My GI doc said if my emzymes kept getting worse he would want to do a liver biopsy  for liver disease as a precaution but he felt it was because of my celiacs. My enzyme are still off somewhat but not getting worse , and my bilirubins are still elevated. . The main thing is they are not getting worse.

#838788 Thinking Of Going Vegetarian

Posted by a1956chill on 25 November 2012 - 05:33 AM

I was able to add both dairy and eggs back into my diet AFTER  I found the rest of my intolerances  and AFTER some major healing had taken place .
I am realistic enough to know that with my intolerances I will ( probaly ) not be able to vegan and healthy. Being healthy is what it is all about :)  So I am grateful that eggs and dairy are something that I can currently tolerate .I am currently vegetarian and I am good with that :D
My suggestion is : if you are not showing any signs of other intolerances add dairy and eggs back ONE at a time . Keep a food journal and see how it goes.
I recently I attempted to add corn back into my diet ,,, with my system clear of other intolerances it did not take long to know that corn  TRULY DOES NOT work for me  at all   ever

#791829 Donating Blood

Posted by a1956chill on 28 April 2012 - 03:45 PM

Since the majority of us are battling anemia,
the vampire would probably spit it out and scream
"Blech! what the hell is this crap!?
Where's the good stuff?"

I always feel like I am going to pass out when they take it.
I mean just walking in to my endo's office I give 6 to 8 tubes. I do not have that much left on any given day  :P

My blood type is uncommon (AB) and for years I gave blood regularly. They  would call and remind me that enough time had passed and I could give again.

Then they reluctantly started to decline my blood.

I no longer give blood. With my recent liver issues  and other problems  they will not except my blood. I an not sure it  would do any one any good any way
