I think you and I have been gluten-free for the same amount of time. I just hit 6 months last week. The stages of grief are absolutely true! When I first read that, I laughed a bit, and didn't take that part of going gluten-free seriously. But I went through all 5 stages of grief, including the anger. I have also made some mistakes along the way, been glutened, and been angry about being glutened. BUT you will get through this, I can assure you. Let yourself go through the grief stages. It's ok!!!! You're going through a massive lifestyle change, and it's natural for it not to be easy. Just keep hanging in there!

Hey New,
I'm much like you...do not like to cook. (I'm a 31 year old single guy. What do you expect? ;) ) But I am able to keep it simple when I do cook, and use a lot of fresh proteins, vegetables, fresh fruits. The food store I usually shop at is really good at labeling their store brand items with allergens (including gluten), so that has helped a lot, too! (George Foreman grill is great for cooking proteins if you're not inclined to cooking).
I have been able to hold down my job with this. I have a really great boss. When I went to her about my at the time unknown health issues, she did say that she said that she noticed I was losing weight, and was very understanding when I explained that I might be missing time either from feeling lousy or doctor's appointments. So if you currently have a job, see if you can sit down with your manager and explain what has been going on. Explain what you're doing to recover/take care of your health, and that your perfomance will be improving with it, though you may miss a day or two here and there. I have found that when you explain it in terms of why this is relevant to that person, and what the benefits for them are, they're more receptive to what you have to say. No guarantees, though, unfortunately. (I actually just had a one on one meeting with my manager a few weeks ago, and she said she thought of me when reading a newspaper article on celiac. She's been pretty cool about it all).
And absolutely, don't be afraid to treat yourself or do something you enjoy. It will help you feel better, because it will take your mind off how you're feeling. I find a good book, or picking up my guitar, is good for me.

My day job is as an accountant with a large mortgage company. I'm in the back office part, a kind of thankless job. But it's got good hours and low stress.

My alter ego is in a local band that plays mostly original music. We know what we are, and we're not looking for any big contract or looking to make it big, but we enjoy it! It's a great creative outlet. :D

Thanks guys!! I'm just getting tired of answering "Have you lost weight?" when I go to church every week. "Yes, I know, I look skinny. No, it's nothing I can't treat or deal with. Yes, I'm going in the right direction." Got the answer down pat! I think I'm going to get a T-Shirt made up that says "I've lost both weight and gluten, and never felt better!" ;)

I've definitely been focusing on protein, trying to get it in each of my 3 meals everyday. Lean chicken (love the meat from Whole Foods!), nuts, etc.

jelina - Thanks for mentioning the "hypermetabolic mode." Never really thought about that. I've always had a high metabolism to begin with (not sure if there was a relation to gluten), so it probably just kicked into a higher gear than it was already in. That's a big encourangement!

I agree with Josh. It depends on how much gluten I've taken in. Usually, the worst of my symptoms are the first several hours, but I do find that getting a good night of sleep does help. Then they will gradually go away over a week or week and a half, and I'm pretty close to 100% in two weeks.
