Topics I've Started

Goodies In The Mail!

30 June 2012 - 10:31 PM

I got an awesome package in the mail today. Schar sent me a sample of 4 ciabata rolls along with a coupon booklet. I was so excited! I don't even remember signing up for this so I am not sure why it came but it was a nice surprise. I can't wait to try them. And these coupons will come in handy. I love their crackers.

Another Scalp Post!

06 December 2011 - 10:13 PM

Well I have seen posts that question whether contact with wheat products can give someone DH and frankly I just don't have time to do the research so I don't know what the arguments are pro/con. I didn't give it much thought really. I did notice that going gluten free gave me the glorious side effect of stopping my insane scalp itch (that was accompanied by little sores that scabbed over) that I never even thought were related to my diet, I just thought I had dandruff or something and nothing made it go away so I just learned to live with it. When I read about DH in association with gluten free diets I was convinced that that was the reason why my scalp itched so horribly and why it went away with the gluten free diet.

Then I bought some Potion 9, which I had used a lot in the past but coincidentally I had not used for a while when I went gluten free but recently bought it again because it is great at controlling my frizzy hair. THE ITCH AND SORES CAME BACK! But I didn't immediately associate it with the Potion 9, I thought maybe I was being cc'd at a low dose that wasn't giving me the dreaded D but causing the scalp itch to come back. But a post on here drove me to read the labels on my hair products and LO AND BEHOLD Potion 9 had wheat protein :( I stopped using it and what do you know? My scalp itch went away too! I don't know the mechanism but I guess it doesn't matter. Does anyone know of a good gluten free hair product that works like Potion 9? It works so well-I am so sad that it has wheat in it.

I am really amazed at this whole thing, if someone had told me this previously I would have thought they were nuts but I can't argue with the results. I am just glad I don't itch any more because it was truly driving me crazy.

Coconut Layer Cake

01 August 2011 - 09:59 PM

I made the Coconut Layer Cake from the Gluten Free Baking Classics cookbook by Annalise Roberts and I had to come here and tell everyone how amazing it was! So delicious! Just like "regular" cake. I was so pleasantly surprised.

Now I am off to buy the sorghum and millet flours so I can start baking some bread :D

I found the rice, tapioca and potato starch at an asian market nearby. It was so much less expensive than anywhere else. Is there a similar type market that would have the sorghum and millet flours? I just don't have 7 or 8 dollars for a small packet of flour...
