Muscle Pain

06 August 2014 - 07:04 AM

Has anyone else had problems with severe muscle pain and/or spasms in muscles?  I was diagnosed about 3 years ago with celiac disease and it was muscle weakness that lead to a diagnosis as I had severely low ferritin levels.

Unfortunately my muscle problems keep coming back even though I am totally gluten free. I have mentioned this elsewhere a while back because I also have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. My upper back keeps going into spasm and even when it's not in spasm the pain in my back is unbearable. I've been on and off various medications and have given up on doctors as they don't seem to be helping me.

Also it doesn't take much to make other muscles in my body hurt, I can't carry things, I can bearly manage a small handbag when I go out.  Does it sound like it's anything to do with Celiac disease.

When I went for my last celiac check up, the doctor told me that I have osteopenia, although I had a DEXA scan the year before and nobody bothered to tell me! My lower spine is degenerating (facet joints) - MRI scan 2005 - and am wondering whether the upper ones are too, which could be putting undue pressure on my muscles.

Any thoughts?

Burning Sensation In Mouth

11 March 2014 - 04:13 PM

Has anyone ever had a burning sensation in their mouth (upper palate), tongue and inside of lips? I have noticed this getting worse over the last week or so. I have looked on line and there seems to be various causes. I just wondered if anyone with Celiacs had it, and what they thought might be the clause. Chewing gum seems to help, but I can't do that 24/7.

Baclofen Medication?

08 March 2014 - 03:59 PM

Anyone taking Baclofen? I'm interested to find out if anyone of this medication has suffered with acid reflux, as I'm trying to find the source of my problem.  I'm not saying categorically that this is what has caused my acid reflux as I have a hiatus hernia.  With Baclofen being a muscle relaxant, I was just wondering if this is why I'm having worse problems.

Acid Reflux And Ppi's

05 March 2014 - 12:38 PM

Hi everyone,

I was diagnosed Celiac disease about 2 & 1/2 years ago, but even before that had bad problems with acid reflux. I have been taking a PPI (Proton Pump Inhibitor) for about 5 years, maybe longer.  However, recently, it stopped helping my problem.  I wake in the night with burning acid in my throat and mouth. I have been having problems with my throat since late October 2013 and have seen 4 doctors, (5 appointments), it seems my throat has blisters caused by the reflux.  In short, I had my PPI increased, but this didn't help, so I asked if I could change PPI to one I had had pre-celiac.  Doctor changed the tablet and increased dosage to 40mg.  My stomach felt like a ball of fire, as did my throat and after 3 days, decided I couldn't tolerate it (I realised afterwards the new tablet contained lactose - I'm dairy intolerant).

I have read a lot recently on-line about PPIs actually making the problem worse, and a lot of people with acid reflux actually have low acid, not the other way round.  I am keen to find out other sufferers experiences as well as needing to go back to my doctor.  This morning I woke with fire in my throat and my tongue also seems burned; it is so painful.   I considered taking Apple Cider Vinegar but have read you shouldn't take it if you have high blood pressure and taking diuretics.

Can anyone help please?

Stomach Cramps

16 October 2013 - 07:50 AM

My last endoscopy showed my gut was healing well and that I have excellent control over my coeliac diet, BUT

only a few weeks later I started with the usual tell-tale cramps in stomach etc.  I thought it was cross contamination, and with the help of a food journal whittled it down to three possibilities.  Now I am not so sure, as I have not had any of these things in my diet since.

Then I stumbled upon information about bananas causing problems so I've stopped eating those too.  Trouble is, the cramping started again about an hour after my breakfast and has remained with me since. (I wake up each day without stomach cramps, it's only after I eat).  I have been a sufferer of IBS for years and wondered if it was that, although, I would say, I do get plenty of fibre from non-gluten sources. In fact I began to wonder if the rice bran flakes had been too harsh and stopped using them. Everything I've tried has not made a scrap of difference and I'm wondering what to try next. I know a lot of people on here have food allergies since cutting out wheat/gluten, but as I'm already keeping a food journal and nothing appears to be showing up.

The only other thing I can do is cut out the Metformin I've been prescribed to see if that makes a difference.  Anyone got any other ideas?
