In Topic: Celiac Vs. Gluten Intolerance

07 April 2013 - 01:48 PM

I got really lucky in finding my diagnoses also. I was getting a full work-up from a back specialist for my extreme muscle spasms. Muscle relaxers and naproxen weren't even touching it. The doc found a softball size bubble in my stomach and just so happen to suggest I might be gluten Intolerant. So I was like "what is that?" and "so what are you gonna do for my back?". I started reading about celiac symptoms and thought I'm not crazy after all about all of my random issues. GI doc confirmed Celiac with endoscopy biopsy, but I couldn't keep consuming gluten before my blood test which was negative because of that. I got all children tested and my oldest child has extreme Gluten Intolerance. Extreme meaning he tested very high for intolerance. We are still fighting his vitamin Deficiencies and Accelerated OCD from the lack iron and vitamin D. He struggles with fatigue and irritability daily. We are both on the right track to wellness now and hope for the best.

I could live off Sugar!!  Try to eat only 1 sweet treat a day.  If you eat a lot of sugar daily you may go through sugar withdraws for awhile, but eventually you may notice that you are thinking about it less often and even go days without it.  I love Peanut Butter mixed with Honey, Bananas and Peanut Butter, LARA Bars (flavors blueberry muffin and Chocolate chip cookie dough), KIND Bars (flavor peanut butter dark chocolate+protein), & apple wedges dipped in peanut butter.

In Topic: Is Irritability Common Among Celiac Patients?

01 April 2013 - 07:12 PM

My health professional just told me that irritability can be caused by the need for B vitamins.  Irritability is one of my first signs of getting gluttened.  I am still not sure if it is "caused by" or if it just makes it hard to be nice.  You may want to check your nutrient status.

One more thing:  I haven't been able to eat malt balls for many years, but I recall the malt is usually made with barley.  I think they do also contain wheat.  Hard boil some eggs instead and be happy!  ha ha ha I know, it doesn't quite give the same feeling!  But who wants the grouchy feeling In spite of a little in good taste.

I threw cheese through a window once.  I had a sudden surge of irritability for no reason.  Well, I found out later that I was highly intolerant of cheese.  I therefore conclude avoiding foods that cause these problems is best.

I get extremely irritable a while after I've been glutened for some reason.  Today it happened after I had a fountain drink of Diet Dr. Pepper.  After consuming gluten I get immediate symptoms in my fingertips.  They turn white and feel cold and numb almost like there is no circulation.  Then a few hours later I felt the irritated about everything.

KU Med have specialists. I wonder if they would have celiac doc. I went to a great GI doc too but he didn't have much to offer me in advice with my celiac when I went for my follow-up after being diagnosed in biopsy. His only suggestion was taking Allign for my gut...some follow up. I should've saved my $25 copay for my Primary care Physician which he referred me to for all of my other problems and pains.

There are soooo many products with the gluten free label that aren't really gluten free. I get so mad at companies just trying to jump on the gluten free bandwagon to make a buck! Check out the unsafe ingredients list on celiac.com.
