Confused And Need Help With Sons Symptoms

11 May 2013 - 10:10 AM

My son is 21 months old. He has been unofficially diagnosed with Celiac Disease based on symptoms. He has been gluten free for 8 months. The one symptom that has not gone away is constipation. He goes 4-5 days between bm and when he goes it's painful for him. I cannot stand to see him like this anymore. He takes a tsp of miralax everyday. I have tried increasing the miralax, but then he gets diarrhea. I would like to figure out what is causing his problems instead of just treating the symptom.  He is allergic to dairy and peanuts. He also had an IgG blood test run when he was 8 months old. It came back positive for dairy, peanuts, eggs, strawberries, banana, and brewers yeast. After having the skin test done the allergist said we did not need to avoid anything but the dairy and nuts. His GI also said that the IgG testing does not mean anything and he can eat those foods. I am now wondering if we should avoid those foods. I have been keeping a food diary off and on for the last year, but I can't figure this out. I don't know what to do for him anymore. I need help figuring this out.

Cross Contamination From Pets?

25 January 2013 - 12:22 PM

My ds is 18 months old. Every time I take him to my mom's house his symptoms come back. He has bad sleep, loss of appetite, constipation, and tantrums. We are careful when eating there. She has bought him his own foods and dishes. The only thing I can think of is the pets are contaminating him. She has cats and dogs. He does get into the bowls sometimes, but I immediately wash his hands. Can he get contaminated from petting them or kissing them?

Celiac Symptoms Or Something Else?

14 October 2012 - 03:12 PM

Hi everyone. I'm pretty new here and would like some advice about my symptoms my son is having. He is 14 months old. He has been constipated since he was 8 months old. Diet changes have not helped. He is on miralax but still only goes about every 7 days. Other symptoms he has are fussiness, clingy, never sleeps, gas, he stopped growing for a few months, stomach aches (he puts my hand on his stomach for a massage), no appetite, his top front teeth have enamel defects, and several food allergies. To me these seem like Celiac symptoms but could also be from something else like teething or food allergies.

He is deficient in IgA so the IgA testing could not be used. His GI did genetic testing and he has the DQ2 gene. After the genetic testing we went gluten free. His symptoms have seemed to improve somewhat. His constipation was better for 2 weeks but then started again. This happened once before when we went gluten free before we knew anything about celiacs. I was trying an elimination diet to try to find other sensitivities.

I guess my question is does this seem like Celiac Disease? How long before symptoms improve - especially the constipation. I really thought the gluten free diet would help that, but so far I see no improvement in that area. Is there something else we should be looking for?

Frustrated With Symptoms In 14 Month Old

10 October 2012 - 01:37 PM

My son is 14 months old and is currently on a gluten free diet, but has not been diagnosed yet. First I would like to share some background information. Sorry in advance for the long post.

He has always been a "high needs" baby. He has never slept much, wants to nurse constantly, is very clingy and fussy. When he was 4 months old he started having bowel movements every two weeks. The longest he went was 23 days. The doctors all said this was normal because he was exclusively breastfed. After starting solids at 6 months he still did not have regular bowel movements. The doctors said he just wasn't eating enough solids and he was fine. We tried everything to get him going regular. He had all different kinds of juice, fruits and vegetables, flax meal, probiotics. Nothing worked. At 8 months he went 10 days with no bm. He was extremely constipated. He was started on Miralax, 1 tsp every other day. We had multiple tests run. He came back with multiple food allergies and inconclusive IgA testing for celiac disease. One thing he tested positive for was yeast. I cut out bread with yeast, but not gluten. He did not grow at all between 8-12 months but after cutting out bread he gained a pound and grew an inch in 2 weeks. We saw a GI. He prescibed lactulose, but he couldn't keep it down (he is allergic to dairy so not sure if there is a connection). The GI said push more solids because he still isn't eating enough to produce any waste. We redid the IgA testing and found out he doesn't produce IgA. We did genetic testing. He has DQ2.5.

After the genetic testing I started him on a gluten free diet. By day 3 he starting having a bm everyday. They were mostly small amounts with more significant amounts every other day. This is the most he has done in months. He did this for 2 weeks. Gained a pound and 1.5 inches. He was eating more than I have ever seen him eat and he started nursing less frequently. His eczema also cleared up for the first time since he was a newborn. Then it all stopped. He went 7 days with no bm. He finally had one on Monday. During that week he wouldn't eat. He was wanting to nurse constantly again. I am just frustrated because I really thought the gluten free diet was working and then we are back to where we started. I really just want to figure out what is wrong with my baby and get him off of laxatives and back to normal. It is really hard with all of his food allergies plus being gluten free to even get him to eat anything. We eat fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, beans, and rice. I did bake some muffins with gluten free flour. Could this have been cross contamination? Is he possibly too sensitive to handle the flour right now? How long should I wait to determine if the gluten free diet is working? I really don't want to do the biopsy because he is so young and I don't feel as if he eats enough to even get accurate results. I am overwhelmed and frustrated and need advice.

Need Help Interpreting Hla Results

26 September 2012 - 12:05 PM

Hi I am new here and I need some help. My 14 month old has been having problems with constipation since he was 8 months. He had a celiac panel ran but he doesn't produce IgA. We had the HLA testing done and he tested positive for DQ2. I understand that, but I am having trouble with some of the results. It was done throuh Labcorp.

Results:
DQ2 (DQA1 0501/0505, DQB1 02XX) POSITIVE
DQ8 (DQA 03XX, DQB1 0302)

Final Results:
DQA1*04:01, 05:01
DQB1*02:01,04:02

Does this mean he has 4 alleles of the DQ2 gene? If so that would mean he has 2 copies of the DQ2 gene, correct? I have a BS in Cell and Molecular biology so this isn't completely foreign to me, I'm just having some difficulty reading the results. We have a follow up with the GI next month and I want to be prepared.
