Totally Confused On Genetic Test Results- Please Help?

01 February 2013 - 08:02 AM

Hi,

I'm in the middle of a horrifyingly bad gluten challenge in preparation for my biopsy, etc., so please excuse any confused-sounding bits of this.

Before subjecting me to a gluten challenge, I had the genetic testing done. I don't entirely understand the results, but the gist is that I'm positive for one of the types:

HLA-DQ2 (DQA*05/DQB1*02) - Positive
HLA DQ8 (DQA*03/DQB1*0302) - Negative
HLA-DQA1* - 02
HLA-DQA1* - 05
HLA-DQB1* - 0201
HLA-DQB1* - 0202

If anyone out there actually understands this, I would really appreciate more insight.

The real confusion is coming from my parents. My dad also demonstrates symptoms similar to mine. The cause of my symptoms HAS been diagnosed as EITHER celiac or non-celiac gluten intolerance.

However, when my dad went in to get tested, too, they had him also do the HLA test and he came back negative. (My mom is negative, too.) I wanted to know how it's possible for both my parents to be negative, but then I'm positive. Does anyone understand the genetic component better?

I'm trying to encourage my dad to pursue this because he's having some symptoms that are troubling (i.e. serious brain fog) and I would like to see if I can get him some help before it gets worse.

Benefits Of Gluten Challenge Before Genetic Testing?

07 December 2012 - 07:18 AM

Hi there,

I'm in the midst of getting diagnosed, mainly to find out whether I have celiac or non-celiac gluten intolerance. I went off gluten to see if it would improve my symptoms, not realizing I would have to be on it in order to do testing. My PCP didn't want me to suffer by going back on for the blood work, so I did the first round of blood tests without having ingested gluten for over a month.

I'm wondering, since I can't get a straight answer, what the benefit is of doing a gluten challenge to get blood work done versus doing the genetic test first. (My insurance will cover the genetic test...) It seems like the blood tests with celiac are so unreliable...

Anyway, I'd appreciate any insight you all have gotten over the years!

Thanks in advance!

First Cold Sore When I Went Off Gluten

04 December 2012 - 04:21 AM

Hi,

I'm brand new here!

I'm going through the testing process to find out whether I have celiac or not, but if it's not that, I have a non-celiac gluten intolerance. I went off gluten a little over a month ago as an experiment to ease my migraines, and it worked.

The problem is, I've had a massive cold sore on my lip since almost the same time. I wanted to find out if anyone else has had the onset of cold sores after going OFF gluten...

Thanks so much.
