In Topic: Elemental Diet And Leaky Gut?

07 January 2013 - 07:44 AM

I'd love to know more about this, too. I can't seem to eat much, and the docs here won't put me on an elemental diet because I'm in a US military medical system and they don't support it (the GI used the words "tip of the spear" twice to refer to the medical care available...apparently the elemental diets are far away from the tip).

I tried two of the ones I heard about on this site. The first caused some malabsorbtion symptoms and the second...had trace amounts of casein. Which I'm pretty sure I'm intolerant to.

Do you want the casein one? I'm happy to ship it to you, free of charge -- I hate the thing going to waste. It's sealed, unopened, and supposedly works great. (I can send along the other one but it's already opened.)

PM me if you're interested. I can give you all the details of both and you can see what you think.

Little off topic: if you have leaky gut - are you aware that the vegetable oils, eggs and ultramarathons are probably contributing to that?

SIBO causes leaky gut and if you have food allergies you already have leaky gut as it allows gluten, casein fructose and other undigested molecules to cross to your bloodstream and trigger reaction.
Stress, diet high in alcohol and sugar causes both SIBO and leaky gut, There are other factors that cause leaky gut while the effect on intestinal flora I did not research (food preservatives, toxins, ...)
Additionally you do not really need to distinguish between the two as the treatment is the same: autoimmune paleo diet which is standard paleo (no grains, no grain oils, no legumes) -alcohol -nightshades -milk -eggs.

At the time I had gluten, lactose and fructose intolerance my time between eating foods and reaction was 2-2.5 hours. It helps a lot in the self experimentation to find out what is a problem food and what can you eat.

Both alcohol and coffee cause intestinal permeability to increase (leaky gut) and we are consequently more sensitive to gluten, lactose and fructose (sugar). I gues, given the recent New year celebrations, we will see more stories like this.

Autoimmune paleo diet and SCD diet are closes to what you are eating.

In Topic: Lectins, Leaky Gut & Celiac Disease - The Connection

12 December 2012 - 07:35 AM

I was diagnosed with celiac disease in March of this year (2012) after experiencing an on-set of the following symptoms:

-EDEMA (extreme tissue swelling all over the body that never seemed to subside)
-SINUS CONGESTION and SCRATCHY THROAT
-Achiness
-Fatigue
-Anemia (falling asleep all of the time)
-Severe cravings/constant hunger

I immediately eliminated ALL gluten. I felt better for a few weeks, then I felt progressively worse. I've toyed with elimination diets of all sorts for the past six months. I have been able to pinpoint some problematic foods, but what throws me for a loop, is that some herbs, and possibly some vegetables seem to bother me.

I've recently discovered that many celiacs are sensitive to all lectins when they have a leaky gut. I have felt better cutting these well-known lectins from my diet
-legumes
-dairy
-all nuts
-soy
-nightshades & citrus

However, I feel there are some other things lingering in my diet that contain high lectin levels. Is it true that garlic and onion are high in lectin? Are there any fruits and veggies that are known for high lectin content??

Do not overlook the obvious: What is your position on alcohol. For me it was #1 contributor.
