In Topic: Gaining Weight On gluten-free Diet

Everyone grows at a different rate, and if she is anything like other North American earthlings, she is going to be in a slow, near dormant phase now and start up again this spring. Sheesh! Doctors!

I'm sometimes seeing photos of regular sized women with these 2 year old toddlers who are as physically large as what a 4 to 5 year old used to be 50 years ago - that ought to be scaring people, because just because they are large and maturing early physically, it doesn't mean that their emotional maturity is matching.

It really helps to get other opinions. Thanks for your thoughts!

Where is she on HER growth curve? That is the important part. As long as she's following her curve, I wouldn't be overly concerned at all. I know our Dr. was worried about DS's weight and we wee sent to a (useless) dietitian. But he's following HIS patterns.

She's dropped slightly on the height side and dropped about 6% on the weight side. We have also seen a dietician and felt the same way as you (useless). My game plan now is to start counting her calorie intake and introduce a new nutrition shake. Thanks for your thoughts!

In Topic: Back Again - Low Iron, Elevated Sugar, And Uti ?

23 January 2013 - 05:55 PM

Hi everyone,

I haven't been here in a while because things have been going so well for DD7 and myself. We've been gluten-free for 2 years.

Recently, her routine bloodwork showed low iron (5) and slightly elevated sugar (7.2). I was told to put her on an iron supplement (300mg/day) and not worry about diabetes, but that her blood sugar will be checked again in a month.

The other concern is that she has recurrent UTIs (once a month, sometimes back to back/not clearing up). Scans have ruled out valve problems and any other scary concerns.

So, my questions are:

1. Why is her iron low when she has been taking a multivitamin with iron daily for 2 years? She isn't eating as much iron-rich food as I would like her to, but would that drop her iron to 5 even with the multi?

2. Is there a connection between iron and blood sugar?

3. I'm aware of the celiac-diabetes link, but is 7.2 a number to be concerned about?

4. Any thoughts on the UTI situation?

Thanks in advance for any information you can provide.

My daughter has been gluten free for almost 2 years. We recently had a diabetes test and her sugar level was a little elevated so they completed a a1c test which came back normal. Did they have him fast before the test? Sometimes when they do the test randomly, it can cause the levels to be a little elevated based on the foods they recently ate.
