In Topic: Has Anyone Out There Had Issues With Silk Dark Chocolate Almond Milk Or Any A...

12 May 2013 - 08:20 PM

We have had problems with Silk almondmilk.  It took me a couple days to figure out where the problem was coming from, but we finally figured it had to be the milk.  We usually use Almond Breeze, but we got Silk because it was on sale and my son (three years old) was SO sick all of a sudden.  He is very sensitive, so that may be it.   I know we have had it in the past, though, with no problems.  Maybe a batch got contaminated somehow?  I don't know, but I do know that I hate seeing him crying and writhing with stomach pain!  Poor guy!  As for applegate farms, we have never had an issue.  We have had the turkey dogs and turkey bacon.

In Topic: Cookbook Recommendations?

Our favorite gluten-free cookbook is The Healthy Gluten Free Life.  I use it daily!  Very easy to read, pictures for every recipe, explanations of flours and other ingredients in the front of the book.  Really well done.  All recipes are gluten, dairy, soy, and egg free.

In Topic: Failure To Thrive Question

We believe that two of my kids have celiac, but we had a terrible pediatrician who just really didn't care to find any answers with us.  My daughter will be one tomorrow.  When she started eating at 6 months she had gluten in her diet.  Between her 6 and 9 month check ups she barely grew.  She dropped from the 75th to the 10th percentile.  I was shocked and a little scared!  My ped blew it off, though, and said it was nothing to worry about.  Since we have a history of gluten issues, we took her off gluten immediately.  She shot up more than two inches and gained three pounds in just two months.  We have switched pediatricians and I am glad I followed my gut.  The gluten free diet also cured her of her tummy issues and constipation.  Find a new doctor!

In Topic: Can Testing Wait?

Wow, thank you all so much!  You are all very helpful!  I actually called today and set up an appointment with a new pedicatrician.  I am hoping I can get the referrals I need from a different doctor.  I would love to find an understanding GI who can give me some options and ideas on what the best steps to take would be.  Good idea on my husband and I getting tested.  We all went gluten free with my son, and I have noticed dramatic differences in my health and moods.  It makes me wonder... If you have any other ideas or information for me, I would love it.  Thank you again!  It is so refreshing to "talk" to people who take my concerns seriously.

In Topic: Calling It Celiac?

Thank you, everyone!  I figured I would need a real diagnosis at some point.  I have a lame pediatrician and I have to find a new one.  I have been asking for a referral to a GI doc for a couple years and have been refused the referral.  I have called the GI docs and they say that I need a referral from my pediatrician.  Ugh.  Now to research pediatricians...  Any advice?  I have been keeping a detailed food journal since we went gluten-free, and even that was not enough to convince my ped that gluten could be the problem.  He said that my son was just finally outgrowing his GI issues.  Same thing with the iron.  And the tantrums.  What exactly does a gluten challenge entail?  How invasive is the testing?  I really have had a hard time finding out exactly what has to be done.  Is a GI doctor the kind I need to see, or is there another type of doctor that could help me?  What about the kits I've seen online (pretty expensive) that do DNA testing for celiac disease?  I also think my 11 month old daughter has the same problems as my son.  Should she also be tested or is she too young?  Sorry for all the questions!  I am a little lost in this new world... :)
