#870254 The New Celiac Drug Is Out There

Posted by jerseyangel on 23 May 2013 - 05:40 AM

It's not for me.  I am leery of new drugs, you never know what else they might or might not lead to down the pike.

I also tend to get most listed side effects -- just lucky that way.

The "suffering" on a gluten-free diet is overblown in my opinion.  I eat very well, and I've yet to have a complaint from dinner guests at my home where I cook strictly gluten-free.

#866064 Legumes

Posted by jerseyangel on 30 April 2013 - 05:07 PM

I couldn't eat legumes of any kind for years.  Made me so sick.  After about 7 years gluten-free, I gingerly tried some again and now do ok with them in moderation.

I would be afraid to use soap on food personally, any residue would probably cause diarrhea.  Whatever works :)

I don't think I'll be able to wait...my silly bday is this week -- thinking four years deserves a present for myself -- how about you?

I'm with you Lisa.  I think we both deserve one sooner rather than later!  :)

#840444 Liver Problems In Celiac

Posted by jerseyangel on 02 December 2012 - 03:37 AM

I also have liver issues . I was diagnosed with gilbert's disease becasue of  elevated level of unconjugated bilirubins. My liver enzyme levels were also all over the place. My GI doc said if my emzymes kept getting worse he would want to do a liver biopsy  for liver disease as a precaution but he felt it was because of my celiacs. My enzyme are still off somewhat but not getting worse , and my bilirubins are still elevated. . The main thing is they are not getting worse.

1956, I have also been diagnosed with Gilbert's, my bilirubin fluctuates as well as my enzymes.  I was told by the doctor to be careful not to get dehydrated, as that would cause it to dip.

#840410 Liver Problems In Celiac

My liver enzymes still fluctuate between normal and slightly elevated after over 7 years on the gluten-free diet.  I had a work up 3 years ago--lots of blood work, ultrasound, endoscopy-- and the GI basically said it was "sprue related", as no other cause was found.

actually it does get better if it leads to healing

So true.  It is very frustrating at first, and the longer you have been ill before diagnosis, the longer it can take.  I did the whole allergist testing/elimination diet stuff and stayed gluten, dairy, soy, legume, tapioca, coconut, grain lite, and corn free for 5 years.  Not fun, but walking that thin line allowed me to feel almost well more days than not.

As I slowly (the operative word here) had more good days than bad, I tried adding dairy, which to my amazement went well.  Then corn several months later.  I figured at that point I had more variety and was satisfied.  Earlier this year, I tried the dreaded (for me) legumes and I find if I limit to a couple times a week, I'm good.  The biggest surprise though was tapioca--which had previously caused me such pain that I avoided it like gluten.  After gingerly trying some in a cookie, I was floored to discover I was now ok with it.

Soy (which I would avoid anyway) and coconut are still no go's, but who cares!  My point is, healing is taking place--even if it doesn't seem like it.  It just takes (a lot <_< ) longer for some of us.  Threads like this just go to show how resilient, creative, and tough you all are--eating so well on what is available to you.  I love it!! :D

#834983 Myths About Gluten In Everyday Non Edible Objects?

Posted by jerseyangel on 07 November 2012 - 08:33 AM

As for new people, I'm sure they're not dim-wits. It is nice to read different reactions and make up your own mind - not alone in the struggle.
Probably put my foot in it

Not at all, Lady:). I think you summed it up very nicely, and I wholeheartedly agree.

#834932 Myths About Gluten In Everyday Non Edible Objects?

I don't look at buying gluten free shampoo as adding stress, I look at it as eliminating it.

Ding Ding Ding

I use gluten free personal care products.  Personally, when I'm in the shower, I want to shower and not worry about getting shampoo in my mouth as the water runs down my face.
Early on, I was glutened by using a hair gel that contained wheat.  (Wasn't diligent enough to wash it all off, I sometimes chew on my nails a bit)  No question, and if my hair had been long and blew onto/into my mouth as it does now on occasion, it would have been a direct hit.
When a person new to the gluten free lifestyle asks the controversial topical question, I say do what is best for you.  If you can use your gluten containing stuff without issue, go for it.  You can always try to eliminate it if you have continuing reactions after you are sure your diet is clean and see if it makes a difference.

I think we have had several phlipovers causing this storm.

I'm not seeing the smiley guys!

Several phlips would make sense (and get me off the hook).  The storm itself is an unfortunate hurricane/nor'easter combo--no?

The smiley guys appear across the bottom of the reply box when you click on the icon.
